    Practice...Practice.. Practice .. Record your Pastor or who ever, off the board best to get a direct out of just their mic if possible. Then put the recording in a DAW. That way you can work with the sound "off line" . Or you can play the recording through the system and practice boosting and cutting different frequencies. One of the best pieces of advice I got when I started mixing was "Learn your frequencies.." Much like a musician learns notes learn to identify the frequencies..

    Great lesson! What's your usual plan of attack when there's feedback from comb filtering?

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 4 lety +1

      If I can isolate it during sound check, I'll try to get the sound-checker (if not the pastor) to carefully move so that they're on the edge of the feedback, and then pull it out as I find it with my EQ (or RTA if I have one). If it's on the fly... gotta just try and be a sound ninja. But hopefully you can avoid that.

    Great tutorial as always! I would like a guide that's a bit more comprehensive though, that deals with how a headset mic should sit next to the face, how to soundcheck (preacher always whispers with the soundcheck then booms during the sermon), how to prevent breathing noises in the mic (rolling up the hpf helps a bit there), how to prevent those saliva noises (which frequencies to look at), how to evaluate and prevent feedback, etc. Just got thrown into the deep end (I like that) behind the mixer and need some really good pointers to do more than just pushing the fader. One thing though... it's amazing how many sound tech tutorials there are on youtube with crappy, badly mixed intro music and a voice or voice-over that sounds really bad. You would think the sound tech tutorials are not only nice to learn, but at a minimum really nice to listen to soundqualitywise. Not so. Amazing. However... your tutorials sound great!!! Always perfect! Thanks!

    thanks James! I have had some difficulty with momentary speakers with the good old SM58 and I tell them the ice cream cone technique. They almost always then hold the mic close but usually bring it close vertically so a LOT of breath intake comes through the side of the mic. Any frequencies on the fly that we can dial that breath out?

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 4 lety

      Unfortunately, the same frequencies of the breath sound are the “presence” in the actual words, so you’re sunk there. You’ll either need a different mic or different technique and placement

    Hmm. Recently took over AV at my small church. Equipment is all 1992 Peavy (spelling?) And so I have a basic sound board. I'll just find some recordings of our very dynamic pastor, former USMC, and mess with my high mid low knobs. I have a full graphic equalizer that has mechanical dip switches but it isnt in the loop right now. Signal compressor is off too because it is 28 years old and I couldnt figure out how to use it....

    • @AttawayAudio
      @AttawayAudio  Před 3 lety +1

    I use Ken Nordine’s Word Jazz, silly poems with Ken’s Legendary voice, he was “The Voice” you heard during the coming attractions at the movie theater. I usually get a few curious looks from anyone who happens to hear my sound check. I also look for the shyest person and have them check the mic, i want someone who is terrified of public speaking because i know they will pucker, lower their voice in proportion to what they hear coming from the PA, i find this is great for setting for the absolute worst potentially feedback inducing presenters, .....if you do this, make sure you have something for them to read, the point is to ring out without truly torturing them, tho watching them initially squirm can be entertaining......silver lining, this may help them overcome stage fright and fear of public speaking....you will probably have to bribe them, did somebody say donuts??? And make sure to let them know how much you appreciate their assistance, everyone loves a please and thank you sandwich with extra slices of thank yous.....once again, as some people get uncomfortable with praise, this may make them squirm, oh psychology how i love thee..then slap a compressor, usually a multiband so i can zero in on the proximity effect that may arise from potential capsule eaters....with the high threshold and ratio...by planning for the worst, ive found i can dial in a speaking voice pretty quickly, without feeding back versus setting for the ideal and then having to slice and dice my way to a feedback free somewhat ok sound...Love your videos, i have referenced them when im teaching classes for my IATSE local

      Get the mic as close to the source as possible, and get a directional mic. They even make cardioid headset mics if that’s what they want to do. But don’t underestimate a handheld mic (if they’ll hold it the right way) to get the best signal-to-noise ratio

      @MichaelVickery1 Před 4 lety

      Agson Purba / Attaway’s advice is spot on. From experience, I have had excellent results with headsets, both omnidirectional and cardioid. If the pastor is unwilling to use a headset, I have used cardioid condenser Lav’s; however, the success of these is dependent on several factors. For those who speak loud enough, but simply have a voice that is difficult to reproduce accurately with either of the above, super-cardioid handheld wireless like the Sennheiser 945 is a good alternative.
