The kits these days are light years ahead of models 20 years ago. Read a bunch of forums, reviews of kits on said forums; don’t be afraid to ask questions, and watch amazing videos by the insanely talented modelers on CZcams. Remember to stash $20 here and there, and plot a tactical route from your car to a stash, and you’re in business! Welcome back and have fun! M

@@321CatDaddy Man that is the truth about kit quality. Any suggestion for the best forums to visit? I think the biggest downside for me is just starting over. 20 years ago I had a lot of the tools and things, now I'm starting over.

My uncle was a wizzo on a Phantom during Vietnam and I've gone through a ton of his pictures over the years. And you did an amazing job with the flight crew camo. That really increases the authenticity of this build. The Phantom II is my all time favorite plane (probably because of my family connection), and I think you are doing it justice with your attention to detail and skill!

Great video, Matt. Like many of your other co-respondents, I have been modelling for many years (decades !) but I am still learning from experts like you. I am right in the middle of my own Tamiya F-4B build so following this series very closely. Your build of the ejection seats has been sublime, especially all of the descriptors about the colouring. Great Stuff !

  • @PhuVet

They both are pilots. My uncle was shot down in Vietnam in an F4. He was in the RIO job title but he was a pilot as well. He was used as a RIO because he knew the F-4D electronics better due to him going through school after his Flight Commander who was flying the Stick that day. They both went through the same flight school, both were pilots. He actually flew the stick position most days. but this day the commander had to go through recertification for promotion he was the training officer as well so he flew with everyone. At least this is what I was told when I went to his reunion on behalf of our family. I was chosen by my dad because I was at a duty station close to where it happened.
The material at the top was nomex. It was there because it was fire resistant and self extinguishing.
I think the green cable is the emergency release cable. Like if the plane is on the ground and on fire...the latches on the older harnesses wouldn't release if under load. You pull the loop out of the little velcro shut pocket and yank it...it releases at the other side of the harness.

Cockpit looks awesome, love the tiger stripe camo painting on your figures too. The only thing I'd add is that if you're modeling F-4B from 1966. time frame, should've used MB Mk.5 ejection seats instead of Mk.7s supplied by Tamiya. If you watch "On Target" USMC video, it clearly shows Da Nang based VMFA-323 Phantoms were equipped with Mk.5 seats.

It's not really cheating if you've already painted a standard cockpit before. Your skill is already validated. And I agree with your stance that conserving your energy for more planes is a better use of your time. I mean, some people prefer a super detailed single project, and the others, like us, prefer more variety. So you do you, as some would say.

Jet jockey head gear looks cool to me especially when they're muzzled with an oxygen mask. I had no idea you can mix Tamiya XF (X) and LP paints. Which thinner do you use - acrylic or lacquer? I was actually watching this again to see how you treated the top fabric of the ejection sheet - tried it and it works pretty damn good! Guess I didn’t catch the “paint mixture” part the first time I watched it.

I’ve used it a handful of times, and while it’s fantastic, I’d always seems to melt the paint around the decals. At least the 2nd bottle in the set does. Any thoughts?

Whoever thinks using control panel decals is cheating is most definitely not an actual modeller. dry brushing the control panel and then paint brushing all the bottons can only make people suspend their disbelief on a very small scale. On 48 scale it is barely convincing , and on 32 it just looks straight up fake.
