- This week on Rockonteurs we sit down and chat with Rick Wakeman. He embodies everything this show is all about, great stories from great artists about great songs! We love him and barely scratch the surface on his incredible career from Bowie to Yes, T-Rex to Knights on Ice…he has sold 50 million albums across 5 decades in music. Rick is a one off and never fails to entertain. Go catch his ‘Not Quite as Grumpy as Last Xmas’ tour this November and Dec.

Rick Wakeman is without a doubt the greatest keyboardist ever. He can play any style, any genre, and knows music composition, orchestration and choir arrangments. I have been a fan all my life and we share the same birthday. I also play multi-keyboards and Rick is my greatest inspiration.
It might be about time to check in on Rick again. Every five years of his life would generate another hour's-worth of interview topics!
What a brilliant and hilarious interview. Rick’s stories are legendary.
The "I've been away" line is classic. My missus is a Bon Jovi fan and loves the keyboard player David Bryant because he's so flamboyant. I showed her a picture of Rick in his cape playing about 20 keyboards and said "no, that's flamboyant!"
She couldn't believe her eyes, haha!
Listened to this again,
6-30-2022... fantastic stories, learned a bit of Rick's ability to get something played or contracted with some quick thinking!
this show is so cozy , feels like home
Absolutely enjoyable. Looking forward to part 2 someday, guys👍
That was brilliant, definitely need a pt2!
Rick has been a very practical pioneer of Keyboards, good generalised intelligence!
If you haven’t read Rick’s grumpy old rock star books do it,hilarious. Guy Pratt autobiography is also great and funny
I have SO MANY fricken Rick Wakeman albums!
I like ALL, but one!
Onion?
I’ve used a Moog Prodigy, a cut down version of the MiniMoog, just two oscillators but also the fabulous Sync sound where the oscillators were “locked” together. It drifted out of tune a bit as the early Moogs tended to. ELPs Engineers we’re always having problems with the gigantic Moog bank VCS3.
I know Rick dropped out of the Royal College of Music in the 1st year. What influenced him most, Moog, Strawbs, Hammond, etc? He’s a rare individual who’s broken the mould rather than becoming a Concert Pianist……I bet the Beatles were important to him.
I was wondering how long it would take. 62 episodes!
Does Rick like the Yamaha algorithm synthesisers, like theDX7, with the sharp digital sound? Or Analogue synths (fed through a Marshall stack, set on 10.99!)
Rick is a Classicist and didn’t really emulate Keith Emerson’s discords and weird accidentals. Did Rick craft his reputation by design or was it has natural bent??
Taking the gliss ha
Connoisseurs😀
Was Rick alcoholic or a social session drinker?!
Jesus, you guys need to interrupt less...
