Queens Hatching

  • An unprepared filming of a couple of queens hatching. Was going through
    hives, found this one in swarm mode with queens on the verge of coming
    out of their cells. So I set the frame up on the running board of my
    truck and tried to hold camera with one hand and help queens with the
    other. No time to get properly prepared, but thought it still had some
    stuff worth seeing.

    2nd queen emerging: "She's wanting out pretty bad." I would think so - you know since her own cell was already cracked she had to smell the first queen emerge - and so she knew her own life was in imminent danger. The cells were side by side! So awesome to watch, he was so careful! I would not try that myself (I have not handled bees yet), but he had a frame full of queen cells, so it was do nothing = lose all but one. If he tried and succeeded he saved a queen. Worth the risk, obviously. Good job!
    As for the nails: people, do think. If he nicked her - she was dead - the bees would kill a damaged queen. No time for the dirt under his nails to cause an infection to kill her. And no time to waste if he was to save a queen. He managed to save TWO.

    • @julieenslow5915
      @julieenslow5915 Před 5 lety

      Drones are not evicted until Winter is imminent - and she wont be mating with drones from her own colony anyway. If you only had a few hives - she would be flying away looking a drone congregation area. If it had been almost winter then you still had no choice but to let her try to mate: she was all that hive had to get them through winter. Your first frame with eggs on it - you would have to put in her colony (if they survived) to allow them to requeen themselves. That queen would also not have much luck mating, so you would have to do it again after which they would have been ok. Or you could just buy a mated queen.

Like, would the keeper split the hive on their own and install a boxed queen, or install a boxed queen to a hive where the old queen was injured/killed/nonproductive? Or just leave some of the queens in the hive and leave it to the workers?

      In fact the queen can sting as many times as she wants, but normally she only stings other queens to death.
      It is the drones (males) which don't sting.

    • @goldking20
      @goldking20 Před 8 lety +5

      The queen bee has a straight stinger which allows her to sting as much as she wants. However they very rarely sting anything other than other queens. Drones (male bees) have no stingers. Worker bees have a hook like stinger which causes it to become stuck and get pulled out of the bee as it flies away. Thats why workers can only sting once and die afterwards.

      Hey, generally speaking it's around Spring time, they make new Queens in anticipation of swarming when the colony gets crowded.

      +sirastation aj Idiot. Queens can sting as well as the worker bees. They didn't sting as they are probably bred to be calm and they have better things to do anyway.
