We rented a Northwind 18 last year and loved it but I couldn't articulate why other than it seemed well built and paddled well. Just an overall very nice canoe. This series of videos has helped show how attention to many small details adds up.

Wow, been around canoes all my life and learning alot just about this - never would get anything other than wood gunwales, but didn't consider noise or temperature... This is good info that is just not mentioned... thanks! And wood is the sexiest, carbon is nice though.

If I close my eyes and listen to you I see Kermit. Great voice. Don’t get me wrong. Jim Henson had a great voice too.

Is there some way to attach White water loops to a wood gunnel canoe say a phoenix if not what's a good way to lash in buoyancy bags, I don't want to drill holes in the canoe
I would add that wood gunwales, in addition to not feeling cold in frigid weather don't get hot in the sun in hot weather and are easier to grip when wet

Yes, agree on your assessment of the benefits of wood trim. Unfortunately, there's no way to attach whitewater eyelets to wood trim - the best option is to drill the hull right under the gunwales (it only hurts once per hole!) Alternate option, glue in daisy chains - see the website under whitewater gear.

Bear, no matter what I want black anodized aluminum gunwales against that natural Aramid color....should really POP to the eye. (I can always touch up the inevitable scratches.) Now then where can i get some for my Mad River?

It sounds like the E6 gunwales are the strongest of you gunwale systems - why are they not recommended for whitewater? I would think an IXP Phoenix with E6 gunwales would be supremely strong and plenty light and make for a stellar river-running solo tripping boat!

IXP is our most flexible lamination to maximize the impact resistance. E6 are the stiffest gunwales. Stiffness does not equate to strength. Stiffness equates to performance. E6 is the most brittle of the 3 gunwales, making it unsuitable for whitewater.

Which Watco do you like, they have one called "Rejuvenating Oil" and they still sell the original formula.

Our tests show that Watco Exterior for outperforms all the Interior formulations. Watco has lots of wood colored interior versions: walnut, cherry, teak, etc - those are what I've commonly seen in hardware stores. We sell Exterior Natural on our website under Care & Repair, since it tends to be hard to find at retail stores.
