Atlanta native here. Loved the Georgia Dome! It was always packed for Falcons games when we were actually a good team. While I like The Benz as our new home I agree it was way too soon to tear down this great place. I’m glad I got the chance to go there multiple times and always have a pleasant experience. My favorite will always be the 2016 NFC Championship game where we crushed the Packers.

I have fond memories of the Georgia Dome as I got to play in 3 games there for high school football. Watched some Falcons games and college games there also. It was a great venue. The big reason for its demise was a lack of modern day luxury suites and not having a lot of the bells and whistles like AT&T stadium has. However, a multibillion dollar tag that would be needed to stay up with the likes of AT&T Stadium…It was just easier to knock it down and start over.

They were so desperate to ride the coattail of the Superdome that they decided to give the current stadium the same corporate name as it after they were going to name it Falcons Stadium. Really its a dick swinging contest among the NFL owners on who can have the most awesome/newest stadium. Its also a contest of who can milk the most $$$$ out of the local government to build them a new stadium. Nothing was fundamentally wrong with the Georgia Dome, luxury boxes are an easy addition IMO. It wasn't a flawed design like a lot of old baseball/football combo stadiums that had bad sight lines for both games. Think 3 Rivers Stadium in Pittsburg, Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Oakland Coliseum, etc.

I am of the opinion that not a single penny of tax payer money should ever be spend on sports stadiums. It is welfare for the rich and the tax payer always gets hosed.

It also would have benefited greatly if they designed the outside better, so it doesn't look like it's surrounded by scaffolding
