- A few years ago the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, was the "pilot" flying one of his aircraft. The translation said he was flying it all by himself and it seems he read a manual in 3 minutes on how to do all those things. How accurate is that and realistic for a pilot to learn to fly an aircraft in a couple minutes? I explain it in the first ever North KoreaWood vs Reality.

As terrifying as it sounds, a part of me almost wishes that the actual pilot had been brave enough to turn the plane into the building the whole Kim dynasty is inside and do the people of the world a favour we’d never be able to repay even if the pilot managed to survive by parachute.
Normally I’d be absolutely aghast, disgusted, sad and confused if a pilot were to actually crash with the sole purpose of killing everyone on board and in its way. But I’d make exemptions for the Kim dynasty, the direct Trump dynasty (Mary and those of her direct bloodline exempted), and Putin.

Now its pretty easy flying an plane in level flight, even doing turns and stuff, easier than driving an car on an straight road, done it with an friend and an small plane, but he probably had had fun in how careful I was are then feeling the g forces. More than I was in an car in an turnabout, Not to talk about games or it was just 8g :)
My issue with the video is how obvious fake it is, and stupid fake, like the guy on the right, he could just talk into the headphones. and not showing the pilot holding the stick as it was on autopilot and not showing him then not.
Now I guess most US presidents has flown air force 1 at level flight, one of the Bushes was an fighter pilot so not very impressed. However Biden would not post an video of him flying it as twatter and f***book would spew so much vomit it would raise the sea level multiple meters.

The only thing that I seem to have picked up on that nobody else seems to have done is that we, as foreigners and especially Kelsey who is an actual pilot who spotted a few more problems than me as a layperson did (as it should be), were not the intended audience for that video.
That was most likely for the North Korean people. (If you don’t want to read why I think this then scroll down for the tldr.) Except for a tiny, tiny minority of high ranking government officials in Pyongyang, nobody even has cars in North Korea. There are tarmac or concrete roads whose only traffic are bicycles, horse and carts, and people on food. Outside of Pyongyang I don’t think there is even a power grid or even if there is, it’s never used. Even the comparatively wealthy upper class in Pyongyang have frequent daily power cuts. I mean, one of the factors responsible for mass hunger, malnutrition and famine is because the motorised farming equipment including the ones owned and operated by the government rarely have petrol/diesel fuel to run them. Nor do the chemical fertiliser factories have enough power for normal use.
The sad truth is that most North Koreans have never seen anything fly other than the birds unless they’ve watched a few modern(ish) movies smuggled in from either China or South Korea. I’m not totally sure on this part because the information source was filmed quite a while ago so things might have changed but North Korea only has one or two aeroplanes that could be considered as commercial planes. Again I don’t know the actual number but the number of passenger seats is less than 50, and probably closer to 20.
In a documentary I once watched where an older former British reporter was allowed to travel around North Korea to film a documentary whilst tightly controlled and watched by a whole team of government minders. Obviously very staged and fake but it still got a fairly decent amount of information. At one leg of the journey around the country was done by flight. The airport they stood in looked normal and modern except that it was completely and utterly empty except for various employees standing perfectly still and straight at their booths and shops. The film crew had to wait in this empty airport for hours until the weather improved and the incoming flight could land.
And that was the only flight that day. Once it took off, that was it. Only the film crew, their minders and perhaps half a dozen North Koreans were the passengers. When it arrived he could tell that it was an old airplane most likely sold or given to North Korea by the Soviet Union. And that the engines didn’t sound entirely healthy. Honestly I don’t think those other North Korean civilian passengers were true passengers, either being paid or threatened to act their park to make it look like the country has a commercial aviation route like the rest of the world.
So TLDR, yeah I don’t think we were the intended audience for the video. I think it was intended for the normal North Korean citizens (who despite all else will be able to get electricity to power their tvs long enough to get the propaganda from “the great leader” before the next power cut) who are so primitive, so poorly educated and so brainwashed that they couldn’t tell that the whole thing was staged and that the real actual pilot was actually doing the flying and making it look like Kim was.
I probably even know the general plan for that entire tv program. First be told that piloting is very difficult, hard to learn and takes a lot of time and effort to become proficient at it. Which is actually true for the big commercial ones that make me nervous to be a passenger on, but probably not so much for the little ones like a Cessna. And then declare that Kim is going to pilot the airplane himself and because he’s just so awesome, special and gifted with divine powers he can just get in an fly it both safely and well as any professional pilot *without any of the time and training that any human needs* to achieve that level of competence.
Yeah they do all that kind of bullshit all the time about the Kim family. I suppose the closest thing I can point to that the propaganda paints them as is Jesus. Like the first one was born on the holy Mt Paektu with certain supernatural signs heralding the birth of a divinely gifted boy. A lot of revisionist history that claims the Kims played a vital role in the war, resulting in North Korea straight up winning and driving back the US to protect the motherland. Oh and besides being beaten back and is still afraid of the strength of the willpower of the North Korean people, the US is evil and imperialist. They even have a museum containing a few boats and tanks they captured from the US as examples of NK’s might under the Kims… tanks and boats taken from the WW2 era.
I could go on, North Korea is a fascinating example of humanity gone horribly wrong and how mass brainwashing works but this comment has gone on long enough. But yeah the average North Korean isn’t going to know enough about how aeroplanes and piloting actually works to be able to tell this video is fake and that Kim is just another frail human being instead of a half god.

I learn to fly with a ex military Pilot as my flight instructor . He was like a drill sergeant - Safety and cockpit management/sterile cockpit were his key things he emphasized everyday! He told me flying and navigate an aircraft are simple and straight forward. Being safe in the air and respond to emergencies can make you or break you..

Kelsey, I am a CRJ pilot for a regional in the US. I love all your videos, but this one was so good I had to show the crew at the overnight! We all laughed so hard I thought the hotel manager was going to come knocking. Keep it up and stay safe out there. PS: you made the most valid point ever in your video where you read some of the negative comments people have posted, if someone was posing as a pilot but really wasn't, they wouldn't pose as an FO.

I don't watch much tv since I cannot stand commercial breaks that last five plus minutes so I watch a lot of CZcams instead on layovers. Your channel is in my top five go to channels. I always love to share with the crew if I think they would be interested. I show my wife some of the Hollywood vs reality videos because when we watch a movie where it is a 747 outside, 737 cabin and a made up cockpit she tells me I am the only one who notices and no one cares so thanks for helping me win that argument lol.

For the Kim pointing out the window and then at the screen, it could be a form of verification. Here in Japan, some jobs require people to point their finger at things to verify (like an invisible checklist) things that have been covered. I wouldn't be surprised if Japanese pilots checking instruments in a cockpit did this as a standard. I've no clue if that's what it was with Un, but it was the first thing I thought when I saw it.
/Edit: The Japanese term for the pointing is called "Shisa kanko" or "Pointing and Calling". I'll leave a couple links under this for anyone interested.

I was thinking all along that that was what they did. Leave it physically connected so the yoke feels "weighty" (like it's doing something) while all the time it's the actual pilot flying. I don't envy _anyone_ in NK, especially when they get told that their "dear leader" is going to take over and do their job. Damned if you do, three generations of your family damned if you don't!
Reminds me of being a 70s kid, on the occasional rare flight you could visit the cabin and sit on the pilot's lap, and put your hands on the yoke. After a few minutes, you would exit the cabin and the stewardess would give you a fake captain badge. I reckon this practice is what inspired the "Billy, have you ever watched gladiator movies?" scene from "Airplane!"
That clip of Kim in the cockpit reminded me of being a child and getting to go into the cockpit of a jet (this was back in the '70's) I didn't land the plane but I did point at the radar screen!
When Kim points to the front landing gear he is saying that his superior skills as a pilot do not require a front landing gear because he can perfectly balance the plane on two wheels.

As a former U.S.A.F. Crew Chief I can attest that a "pilot" pointing at random things does not project confidence.
I always laugh at the way his entourage following him around are always scribbling in their note pads. They're writing down everything he says like it's the most divine words of wisdom ever spoken.

Kim didn't fly the plane at all. The pilots were there to fly the plane for him but make it look like he was flying because Kim must have the look of perfection at all times.

The plane is a Tu-204 with 3-5 crew onboard the cockpit so theoritucally there are rooms for bunch of peoples
Edit : Also the NK Captain really do a smooth landing and not pulling the yoke all over the place like other pilots do, so he really command the aircraft well

But make sure you push it to the limit, so you feel that cool trust climbing you to flight level 350(or whatever aircraft ceiling). Remember, once you reach this altitude, the air density will be too low, so you never would want to overspeed.
