  • How to find your stolen motorcycle | Monimoto | Cost effective motorcycle tracker review: Anything that helps reduce bike crime or enables the Police to retrieve your bike after has been stolen is a good thing. I'm a huge fan of bike trackers and have them fitted to my bikes, the problem is they are quite expensive to buy, fit and then to run (via costly annual subscriptions). That is until now! This new tracker from Monimoto might be just what we've been waiting for!

    I'm not normally prone to impulse buys but after watching this morning I whizzed off to my local stockist and bought one. Once home I had it up and running in 15 minutes including finding a suitably covert hiding place for the device. Left the key fob at home and took a quick spin round the block to test it and when I returned my phone had a missed call to tell me my bike had been moved and 4 messages to give me up to date GPS locations. I'm very impressed so thanks very much for the helpful review! Childs play to install and very cost effective compared to other solutions.

    Another nice review! BUT I don't see an issue of showing the device as you can see it on the Monimoto web site. An issue is that I have heard of is a number of reports of the police not being interested when someone knows where their bike is, yet the location is provided by the owner vs a tracking company. Not a device issue per se, but it would be interesting to know how the police would respond to an owner with one of these (or similar) who has pinpointed their bike to a location that does not have public access eg garages. Maybe a subject for a future video, perhaps an interview with a representative from the local police? Having said that, for the price and what it could offer, it's another layer of security which I think has to be worth it! It just annoys me that we have to think about multiple forms/levels of security! A useful scenario..you are touring...would I like to get an alert if I'm at a hotel and my bike is being moved? I guess I would..ditto parked in town while shopping, at a venue with your bike parked outside....which for that reason, this would be very useful and for that reason, I'll probably buy one!

    There was a thread on pistonheads recently about someone who had their triumph stolen, checked the tracker, knew exactly where it was but the police weren’t interested. Even with the tracking company phoning the police as far as I know it still hasn’t been sorted out. On the review note top stuff as always sir!

    Excellent - just what I'm looking for.
    I have a chum that owns a bike shop and one day when I was there I had a conversation with a rep of one of those more expensive trackers.
    He wouldn't or couldn't understand (ok, he's a rep, I get that and so has a vested interest) that it was the cost that put people off.
    I don't want to pay £100 a year for a call centre I am likely to never want to use - I can ring the Police myself.
    This is exactly the solution that's needed.
    Nice one squire and pleased that you might do more reviews of things that are variations on stuff you already use.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 6 lety

  • @HollowPoint64

    I bought one of these back in August as I was about to start riding to London for work. I've had some issues with it to be honest, when I stayed in an AirBnB that had an underground car park, the app constantly told me that the tracker couldn't communicate with it and when I went back home that weekend, I had to actually fully reset the device in order to get it working again, which meant removing it from the bike. I did also have a couple of false positives in London, where the tracker alerted me to the bike being stolen, but in fact it never moved from it's parking spot and I knew this, because I could see it looking out of the window of my office. I think this was down to a bunch of kids leaving the school opposite my office and making tonnes of noise, but it could also be because it was located somewhere on the bike 'loosely' at the time, so the unit may have slipped and moved just enough to detect 'tampering' and triggered an alarm. Over the last few weeks, the unit hasn't contacted me at all and I'm starting to get concerned that the battery might be dead, or the app isn't synced up anymore or something. Not a huge concern for me with the bike being in the garage at the moment and a bunch of CCTV covering it and someone is always home, I always know where the bike is anyway right now, but I'm concerned it isn't as reliable as it should be... This all being said, I moved the bike from the driveway to the garage the other day and forgot to take the fob with me, the tracker called my phone and began sending push notifications to the app, so it is still working!
    I would definitely buy one again, despite the flaws, as when it's out in the open (Which it would be when parked up away from home most of the time and certainly would be if it was being ridden) it works perfectly and I quite often find the 'daily report' tells me where I was in the country at the time it triggered the report, which is reassuring that the GPS is working, even on the daily report, not just when the bike is 'stolen'. I like the fact I can fit it where I like, I love the subscription cost and at £150 to purchase, even if it's not 100% reliable, it's reliable enough to give me peace of mind that should my bike be stolen, I probably will get a notification and there's a good chance I will get some idea of where the bike is, when it's been moved, so long as they don't put it in an underground garage, or a van or something (Which quite a lot of thieves would, but I imagine all GPS trackers suffer from this the same way). Compared to the most expensive and full featured trackers out there, I don't rate it, but compared to other battery operated trackers with minimal to no subscription (You don't have to pay for their Sim Card Subscription, you can put your own sim in there if you choose), it's top notch!

    Another great review TMF, thank you. I can see why you like this device, it sounds ideal for most bikes, where the owner can’t justify the expense of a full tracking system, but wants the reassurance of knowing some tea leaf isn’t hooning around on their bike. I will definitely be looking into getting one of these.

    @kevinmobile Před 6 lety +1

    Thanks TMF for an interesting review and as others have said, it's perhaps a minimum layer of armoury that we should all consider for our bikes.
    As you hint however, the more sophisticated approach is a 24/7 monitoring system that will automatically track your bike over a wide area (remember your precious machine may soon be in a Calais dock!) and begin a recovery operation having notified the relevant police who have the power to search and arrest etc.
    The Rolls Royce of such a system still remains in my view 'Tracker' given that it has a complete tracking monopoly with UK police forces and uses VHF rather than UHF to better leak through closed Transit vans, lockups and shipping containers that other systems may not accomplish. Tracker also uses its own network of receiving towers augmented by a mesh system (where your stolen bike can be identified and relay-positioned by another Tracker user) to augment coverage and usefully has links with partner European countries.
    The question with regard to device and fitting (around £550) and annual subscription (around £180) costs I suppose is how much of the bike's value should you spend on initial and on-going security? I don't have any connection with this company incidentally but if you've paid say £15K+ for a new bike, forking out an initial payment of around 3% doesn't seem unreasonable for a system the police use. Horses for courses.

    Decent. I’ll take a good look at this and if worthwhile add it to the selection of ‘beat the crooks’ advice I give out personally to bike owners at work 👌

      @@TheMissendenFlyer do a test!! We want to see it under the trees, in a garage, how it tracks when it’s moving. Ect!! Maybe the difference how it tracks mounting it under the seat vs deep in the bike.
      It’s a tracker! We want to see it track. Have a mate steal it 3 times and actually hide it. See if you can recover it realistically.

      @stephenlane8366 Před 6 lety

      Well it arrived next day (great service) and was dead easy to to set up and install. Test run showed it works fine sending GPS coordinates and map of the bike's location to my phone but no false alarms when the fob was present. It is a bit sensitive I think as I set an alarm just fiddling in the garage without the fob present, but there is an option to reduce the sensitivity and of course just have the fob with you when doing anything to the bike. Just need to see how it works long term now - and hope I never need it in anger!

    Also just to add any tracker will not stop professional thieves as they use jammers the present mobile signals. These are all the pros and cons to consider also you have to be very careful with placement as it can become easy to see where mounted if not done properly

    Very good reveiw! Simple to understand presentation. I totally agree about preventing theft of motorcycles BUT..... Are trackers devisive means of more monitoring?? SURELY the whole idea of going for a ride is to be free and get away from stresses of the ever increasing modern world. If you have to leave your bike somewhere lock it to something solid.???

    Good info. Having looked up the website and seen this vid I'm inclined to fit one to the new RE Interceptor 650 I've just ordered. Seemingly space to fit devices is a bit limited on those - can this one be easily installed on the Interceptor, do you think?

    Thanks for the insight. Looks a great bit of kit. Easy home install and reasonable yearly cost. I guess you don't have to use it just on a bike either. You could use it on your car, boat or anything you want to track.
    Do insurance companies recognise it yet and offer a discount? That would help offset those annual sim card costs.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  Před 6 lety +1

      Correct you could indeed - and that depends on your insurance company, I’ve never had a reduction due trackers fitted :0( ...worth asking the question though...

      Sorry I have to agree. I also did a search on youtube to see it. Some Italian bloke was fitting it to his bike. My Italian is non existant. I would have preferred to see you fit it to your Ducati. Then if you let me know your location, date of birth, place of birth and mother's maiden name I would be a very happy man.

    Hey thanks Mr Flyer,,This product seems just right for me,,, I work in London,,and keep my bike only at work (they are not too happy,but understand) At the moment I am too afraid to leave outside my flat,one night is ok ish ! after that I WILL lose it,,(no question) So I do not use ,,it stays in Lincolnshire in my garage which is a bummer!! I used it last winter when my car was off the road, and the scroats where tucked up in bed cos it was too cold,but now the warm weather is here and they are out in force..Can I just say,, regarding your reviews... You are so right to keep your sponsored products separate from other gear,, I understand you have to turn a coin,, but you could destroy your channel very easy,, with just one selling opportunity... regards

    Good vlog 👍. As you say, part of the armoury in protecting your bike. Primary is a really good visual chain and alarmed disk lock. Secured garage, etc, etc. However, I'm sure their sales will now increase! Small point, €36 is around £31.50 at the current rate of 1.14 not £25.

    Just spoke to them and you can use any sim you like, it will use less than 10mb of data a month, so I may buy this and use a pay as you go sim like the 1pMobile sim, then it will be as good as free monthly cost, maybe worth mentioning for someone on an even lower budget.
