This resolution called for a plebiscite to determine the will of the people of Jammu and Kashmir regarding whether they wanted to join India or Pakistan.
Key points of the UN involvement in Kashmir include:
1. **Ceasefire and Withdrawal of Troops**: Resolution 47 recommended an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Pakistani and Indian troops from the region.
2. **Plebiscite**: The resolution suggested that after the withdrawal of troops and the restoration of law and order, a plebiscite should be held to determine the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
However, the plebiscite has never been conducted. Both India and Pakistan have differing interpretations of the conditions under which the plebiscite should be held, and there have been significant geopolitical and military developments in the region since the 1940s.
India maintains that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country, especially after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which granted special autonomous status to the region. Pakistan, on the other hand, continues to advocate for a plebiscite under UN supervision.
In conclusion, while the UN did propose a plebiscite to let the people of Kashmir decide their fate, it has never been implemented, and the situation remains unresolved.
