At some point I'd love Billy Boyd to talk indepth about Master and Commander, it's such a brilliant movie with amazing sound design and he plays a great character in it which also shows off his range. I imagine filming must have been so different being a ship and it came out same year as Return Of The King so I wonder if working schedules clashed at all.

There is SO much I loved about this conversation: the place of sadness and "failure", the value of making art for the process and not just for the product or for "success", learning more about how film scores are created, and on and on 👏🏻👏🏻 More generally with the show, I LOVE how many diverse creative voices they've featured, from so many different corners of filmmaking and other art forms. There are SO many different ways to be part of making art 💙 Thank you as always Billy and Dom, and to Michael for sharing your stories and insights! 🙌🏻👏🏻

Loved every moment of this weeks! Big fan of Michael, from all the way back when he did the original Medal of Honor games (which he recently revisited with Nami Melumad) to what he has done on film (Doesn't mater about the film, his work on Jupiter Ascending was amazing). Loved hearing him say to screw the rules, since I did a composition for the first time on my audio production post grad and was just prodding the keys making noises hoping or the best!
But it is also great hearing the Goldsmith love. Although I have no idea how Billy didnt go down the Star Trek rabbit hole with Michael, considering he even got to direct a Short Trek!

It's amusing to hear that he thought so little of his score in The Incredibles, that he thought he might be fired, since for me, the score was so perfect. The scene where Mr. Incredible sneaks into Syndrome's lair, eventually finding the computer with the list of all his dead friends. The music is vital to the way the suspense builds and builds. It was not surprising that they originally wanted John Barry, since it definitely sounds like a James Bond movie. The trailer even lifted music straight from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Other times, though, the music sounds more reminiscent of Henry Mancini, of Pink Panther fame.

It blows my mind that so people pass him up when he started out. My first experience with Giacchino was on the Medal of Honor Frontline, then the rest that followed. If anybody had any doubts about his work I would have told them to listen to the soundtrack to game. One of first games to have full orchestra which was because Spielberg always wanted that cinematic sound like when he was the executive producer on Tiny Toons and Animanics, he did it like the old days and had orchestra for the toons when other shows did not want to put in the money.

Ennio Morricone would write the music before the movie was made. Then the director would shoot the scenes to fit with the music.
In Once Upon a Time in the West, the scene when Claudia Cardinale's character arrived in Flagstone, the music was played during filming. The shooting of the scene was paced to the length of the music; and it turned out perfect. One of my favourite films ever.

There is much more to list but wont.

Absolutely ADORE Michael and his work. I think he's an absolute genuis. I've always been a soundtrack person it's always been something I've focused on. I don't know much about music practically. I've done bits of piano and I'm usually quite okay picking melodies up by ear and recognising them from certain parts of a movie but I can't play much or know much about how scores are created etc. I first learned about him through LOST, then with Star Trek and Super 8 and things I noticed he often worked with JJ and started noticing patterns they would do together. The music from LOST is just outstanding. I still cry listening to it. There's a track " Life and Death" which was played a lot and there's a little section at the end where it gets more sinister and it gives me chills every time. The Up melody indeed has a life of its own. What a treat, and conjures the emotions from the film every time I hear. I REALLY loved his work on the first Doctor Strange movie. For some reason or another, I listened to the soundtrack before i saw the movie and remember finishing it thinking I felt like I'd just experienced all the beats of a movie. Like you could tell when the big moments were, what was action, what was an emotional scene. Incredible. I missed his main theme a lot in the new Strange movie. Also, i assume it's a thing Michael himself is in charge of because I notice it across his different projects, he loves a pun or word-play style title for a track 😂😂. I'll have my playlist om shuffle and be like "...Buying The Space Farm? What scene in a movie is that?? Ooooh...it's a Star Trek track" 😂. Fab guest. Seems like a super chill guy too which is awesome.

One benefit of binging is rewatch value. Because you overwhelm your brain with so much material so quickly, you end up forgetting the bulk of it, leading to very enjoyable rewatches.
That being said, it is generally better to watch an episode and give it time before viewing the next. Even just an episode a day can alter how well the content hits and by the end of it, you're maybe two weeks in and feel like you've completed an entire journey since it's been part of your daily life.
Maybe there can be something of a compromise on streaming platforms, like releasing 2 episodes a week.

"Nobody knows anything" such a true sentiment. I spend my time writing novels, querying literary agents, waiting weeks and months for rejection upon rejection. Every time I receive a rejection I am reminded of all the writers who came before me. I read somewhere that 80 queries should be the threshold, but in reality nobody knows anything about anything. I am on 30 queries for my first novel, 15 for my second, and I am writing a third as we speak while revising the other two along the way as I improve as an author. I think I have put in about 10 years of concentrated work on learning how to write, yet I started writing from an early age once I could get away with writing stories for my essay assignments in school. I might be 10 years removed from publishing my first book, or even farther removed than that, but it doesn't matter that much to me anymore. I am an author and I love writing stories. That's about the gist of it.

Regarding music ruining the movie, I absolutely hated Dunkirk because of hte music. It was piercing my brain, it was torture. I get that it was kinda the point but it was too much for me.

Quit spreading the dog fight finger in butt trick, instead lift the dog by neck or collar until it chokes, if it doesn't let go, choke it out. It will be forced to release it's bite because it starts to pass out. You can also wrap a leash around its neck and twist it tight if you're not strong enough.

I'm sad to say that Giacchino is the most overrated composer working in the industry today. His work on Jurassic World in particular is as bland as it gets. I really don't understand his popularity.
He did do an "okay" job with The Batman, but I feel the movie would have been elevated a notch or two had they chosen someone like Trent Reznor instead. The main DUN-DUN-DUN theme for the titular character worked well within the movie, but as a whole you don't feel compelled to listen to the score outside of the movie experience.
