Many people today struggle to understand the fact that people saw literally everything through a completely different lens than we do today. Sometimes things were symbolic for them because of the very context they had for the world around them. You have to remember this when looking at history, particularly because most things we read/hear/see about history have been translated at least once by someone likely with their own personal interpretation.
an interesting tidbit on the symbology of mount olympus: in ancient times, the name olympus was not applied to that mountain specifically, but simply attributed to the tallest mountain locally. olympus is not a name, it is a title. there is no one singular olympus. it is merely the highest point of reference.
As an author I find Celtic mythology, legends, & folklore fascinating; I’m trying to create a fantasy series right now after the time of King Arthur, so studying these kinds of myths, legends and folklore is kind of important since it will mainly be a historical fantasy eventually leading to the Hundred Year’s war, that’s all I can say now without spoiling too much. I do have a question though because now I’m kind of confused did the ancient celts just blend Roman and Viking mythology into their own mythology, or did they have that mythology and beliefs from before?
What you describe seems to align with as well as illustrate the relationship between the conscious and pre-conscious minds, or even perhaps between the conscious and unconscious minds. There is a relationship between what happened or what appears to have happened and one's knowledge or understanding of the event. A force exerted in the otherworld, or for humanity, the preconscious or unconscious mind, may very well find its target in the conscious mind. Even if allegorical, what we perceive through knowledge gained from sudden insight from that which we have not been previously aware often seems real and immediate. Depending on the natural intellectual gifts of intelligence and intuition we possess, we may be able to perceive communications from our unconscious minds through puns and allegories they are able to transmit.
I am very sympathetic to Jung's conception that ancient otherworlds were manifstations of the collective unconscious. And that's not to be reductionist about them; instead this collective unconscious is like the fragmented spectrum that out minds' prism creates from the pure consciousness of being which overlaps with the concept that the universe is conscious of itself 'through' us :)

I also have experienced the other world as being the place that our ancestors and modern seers like myself experience spirits... Some from above, some below (often due to misguided ritual interference, I have found once or twice in places like Glastonbury tor), and some that dwell in this plain I feel to be the middle world, these are the Dryads and elemental spirits... And possibly the old gods and Brida as well! I have often met them all with 3rd eye vision (and twice with physical eyes) and Dryads with physical eyes with the help of mushrooms and dawn. Two of us shared this visual experience. Then their is Tir Na Nog which seems to me to embrace both middle and lower in my observations... But I'm not fully shore. I guess some old Irish person could confirm that one... Any one out there? 👂🌾
I conceive of the otherworld as the anti-Primal world, populated by all anti-matter/anti-energy. Essentially, all physical interactions about the number -1 which together are positive. I find it beautiful that science these days(at least for me) is going full circle....back to myth and legend.

Aren't their portals to the Otherworld through the water? Like in the Crystal Palace the protagonist travels through the water. What I don't understand is why you are comparing the otherworld to other mythologies. The otherworld, in myth, seems unstable and not constant. At the same time, the otherworld is a physical realm that has many different forms. Like Cu Chalain has the option to stay in the otherworld and not return to the normal world. I don't think the otherworld is like Olympus. I think it is closer to southwestern native traditions with entities traveling through the water. The difference being that Danu is facilitating the movement between dimensions. Idk maybe I am wrong. That is just my reading of the otherworld in Celtic myths.
