    How Not to Dress Like a Funeral Director with Nick Foulkes
    Join Kirby Allison as he explores how to bodly incorporate color into his otherwise conservative, classic wardrobe with none other than Nicholas Foulkes! Nick is a British author, journalist, editor known for his bold sartorial style! As much of a fashion icon as he is a celebrated journalist, Nick is considered a leading expert on all things culture, fashion, watches, and cigars!
    In this video, we visit Huntsman to discuss some of Nick's famous tweed commissions with co-Head Cutter Dario Carnera before going to bespoke tailors Kent & Haste to visit with famous bespoke tailor Terry Haste. Nick shares with Kirby some of his tips for how he incorporates color and variety into a classic wardrobe.

      Something that isn't spoken of us the true cost of a bespoke suit. The more money you earn the more expensive they are. Not the financial cost - even someone on a moderate salary could afford one if they were passionate about how they dressed. But the time spent talking, the fittings, and so on. The more you earn, the more your time costs. And the temptation for the affluent is to speed through the process, and being conservative with colour is the quickest path through the bespoke process. To persuade a customer that some colour wouldn't go amiss is a dark art - and here we see a master at work. Or a devil... I'm unsure...

    Here is probably the only comment you'll ever receive from a 30-something female viewer. I enjoy these videos because it shows gentlemen -- a total lost art and rare sight from any female perspective. It refreshing to see respectful, timeless behavior and fashion to boot. I find it immensely attractive and feel lost in the modern man's messy taste and pervasive narcissism.

      But don't you mind his (Nick) somewhat pretentious nature, the constant talking over people, the inability to hold his tongue for more than two seconds, and the unwillingness to listen or learn from other people? It seems like he wants to show off how great and sophisticated he is and this focus on himself makes him completely blind and ignorant/uninterested in/of other people around him.
      But what I find most disturbing is his way of subtly talking down other people, I guess it's a way to make himself feel better/greater, which is sadly common among such people with insecurities. I don't know but it's like he detests Kirby for being very successful, and thereby having the means to live a life he (Nick) wants but cannot have. The company of Kirby, his followers and reach, the content/filming with the focus on gentlemen's haute couture/ dress and the finer things in life, basically all of Kirbys lifestyle that he (Nick) would love to have but doesn't have. I think there is something going on, and all of those fuels something deeper in him and it shines through here and there, when you listen closely to him, how he talks about Kirby or how he talks to him.

    • @priestofpartagas

      @@Kenny-yl9pc Foulkes the Senior is just a trifle exuberant and eccentric; I honestly don't think it comes from a negative place or any of the attributes you ascribe to him. His books are fantastic; I highly recommend 'Dancing Into Battle' and the most recent 'Cigar' volume. He's long been a voice of authority on matters sartorial and cigar-related from his books, columns, and magazine articles.

      I don't deny his literary skills and creative, witty way to shape language. I hope you are right and there is no ill will on his side, that there is no jealousy or other common human failings harboring within him, especially towards Kirby. But I am not so sure about it. It could be because of your sympathy for him, that your judgement is clouded regarding his darker side. But I could be mistaken and it is just his personality and harmless.@@priestofpartagas

    • @Kenny-yl9pc
      @Kenny-yl9pc Před 8 měsíci

      Yes absolutely, that is something I really like about Kirby and enjoy watching. He is such a kind hearted man, you can tell that he is genuinely interested in the person across him, and he wants to listen and learn/get to know them/their thoughts better. That is very rare. Many people, for example Nick Foulkes, is the complete opposite of that, he constantly talks over people, you can tell that he is not interested nor willing to listen or learn from people around him, but rather tries to present himself as sophisticated and "great", it feels very pretentious to me. Kirby is the complete opposite, I mean he is so humble, generous friendly and respectful, and also curious about the people around him, that is very refreshing. I mean he is a self-made man, very successful and wealthy, there are many people in his position, that have none of those attributes that Kirby has. They aren't humble, respectful or any of the manners Kirby displays. I would not want to know what kind of person Nick would turn into if he had the success and means that Kirby has. I mean he is already self-centered and trying to take all the space and "limelight" so to speak.

    This brings back a lot of memories. Back in the 1990s I used to drop by an Italian tailor at least once per month. He had swatch books like these from the best British and Italian mills. I would sit there and salivate over all the good tweeds available. I was also into pin stripes and herring bone cloth back then. Then there was all the good choices for linings, buttons, pocket squares and ties.

I'm looking forward to the experience. Thank you.

    • @Kenny-yl9pc
      @Kenny-yl9pc Před 8 měsíci +1

      Oh, wow that is great, congratulations my friend! I think that is a good decision you are making. It is initially more expensive than ready to wear/fast fashion, but it is of higher quality, made to last, durable, you can wear it for decades and even hand it down to your children. It can be changed and adjusted. But more importantly it supports many craftsmen and people around them who are working in these traditional crafts. It is more ecological, because you don't buy cheap fashion which is made through the utilization of cheap labor, cheap and environmentally questionable materials and manufacturing among many other questionable aspects. What you are doing is part of the old ways. It takes time and is not cheap but it is made to last, it can be repaired, it can be handed down to your children instead of going to waste after a few months or years at most.

This day I knew something had to change, and I started to dress in a more classical. Even if I don't wear a complet suit, I generally try to mix, chinos with sport jackets. In winter, I have discovered heavy tweed jackets. I have seen Mister Foulkes in a book called "We are Dandy". Kirby Allison, in some way, you and others gentlemen helped me a lot through my pain. Once I realized what I liked and felt confident with expressing myself via my wardrobe, I went with far more bold patterns and fabrics. I think you're missing a great opportunity by not going with the most bold of those fabrics - the green, yellow, red, etc. You could match so many more pieces to that pattern and still make a statement. You've become a master of recognizing and appreciating great fabric and construction. Now it's time to get a little bold.

    This was a lovely video! Terry's comment about how people only remember the extreme pieces from Nutters is interesting. I heard something similar from Edward - he said that a large fraction of what they made at Nutters was conservative business suits, but those weren't what people noticed or remembered.
    Also, that grey tweed herringbone is a nice fabric. I have a pair of trousers made from, I believe, that same fabric, and have gotten a lot of good use out of them.

    Great content! I said the same thing on one of these videos where it looked like you were going to do a mob hit. Same idea. But we are all guilty of dressing conservatively. That is one good thing that has come out of the casual world is a bit more expression like sox. I just bought a nice plaid Isaia sport coat. Taking a page out of Mr. Foulkes book. Kirby needs more of this type colorful character for both his style and personality. Gives things a nice lift! Great content!

    Kirby’s going out there with his reservations, but me I’d go for one of everything. I love every fabric they pulled out.

    Another great video. As a Brit, I did chuckle at the mild roasting that Kirby got in that very British, slightly sarcastic/mickey-taking way that often wrong-foots some non-British folks as to how to respond :) . Wonderful chemistry and I hope more follow.

    Great video Kirby. I think dressing conservative is meant to given an impression of seriousness but not style, finding a pattern or color, outside of solid blue or grey , that fits you gives the impression of confidence in yourself and not of what you want people to think of you.
