For $5200 i was expecting yall to to live in a high rise luxury building lol, but that's kinda modest of yall. So your rent is just a little over 12% of your total combined annual salary which is actually pretty good. Most people spend between 20% to 30% of their annual salary on rent.
honestly, we expected a lot more for our $5200 as well but NY rent is just so crazy these days!
Born in BK. I've lived here my entire life. Work at NYP. Very hard to advance within certain organizations. It's either you leave or consider a lateral move. NYC jobs no longer prep you to advance in life. Even with a master's the advance prospects are minimal. If you move here you either have a title (Doctor, Lawyer, Nurse, Accountant, etc...) or you work for a good company like Google. Both of you are like a lot of couples I know in NYC. No matter what, it is financially difficult living in NYC. The outings are not an every day thing. Most New Yorkers stay home and within their boroughs and prefer cooking. Always nice to see my borough neighbors.
hey @aldum14! yeah it’s tough out here! thanks for watching neighbor!
Stopped watching after y’all said the salaries are not even your guys
c’mon - we can’t share the details!!
@@betterdanash why not? Sharing your salary is legally protected from consequences from your employer.
you gotta give us some breathing room brotha - have faith in glassdoor and ziprecruiter.
Google and a doctor, go figure
5200 IS ridiculously expensive. You just happen to choose to live in one of the more expensive areas in the city, either Manhattan or one of the bouegie places in Bkln. I am guessing so that you can live at a nice neighborhood close enough to Google HQ. The 'average' working NYer lives in the further outer boroughs where rents are more like 2400 to 4000/month and commutes 40+ or so minutes.
he said his commute is around 50 mins lol
4-5k is actually average for nyc, anything nicer rent ramps up to 8k+
@@tylerberman8471 median rent for a 2-bedroom across 5 boroughs is $2400 to $3600. You just have to be willing to live in places like Jamaica, Bronx, or Corona for cheap.
-- Yes, there are some places in Bklyn that costs 5200, like Bklyn Heights, Carroll Gardens, and Park Slope. But go further in, and you'll see that prices drop in much more affordable areas.
hey @stevenhs9773! yeah i was honestly shocked to find out how bad the rental market was out here. We live pretty far out in brooklyn but we wanted a ‘relatively’ renovated place with washer/dryer in unit with at least 2br (and it’s only 1 bath!). Considering all those options, this was the most reasonable place that we could find.
@@betterdanash Gotcha. The majority of places in NYC are in older buildings, so you are paying extra for the modern amenities. Additionally, the apartment is market-rate. A large portion of NY is rent-stabilized. I am also guessing that you paid another +5-10% for broker's fee. So yes, if you are relatively new to the city, the only places that might seem available to you are the high-priced apartments, because the rent-stabilized apartments are all taken 99.99% of the time..
--
If you ever consider saving on rent, always be on the lookout for the better deals and living in lesser known neighborhoods and using word of mouth and friends to find alternative locations. Sunnyside/Woodside, Forest Hills, Kips Bay, and sometimes you'll find deals in the Financial District because of the turnover. Often times, landlords would rather accept a lower rent in exchange for a trusted recommended tenant who always pays on time. This is because of recent scandals involving squatters and eviction issues.
Resident doc=$80k. So u at $275base with bonus. Super couple in couple years assuming u continued to be employed.
Bruh criticizing her outfit is crazy lol
Most stylish couple I've seen in a min
thanks @Khawngt!
I want to ask why the rent is so expensive. Is it located in Manhattan? I live in a two-bedroom apartment for $1,800 in Brooklyn. I used to live in $2,300 somewhat luxurious residence in Queens then I moved to BK. And, a Cold Brew for $7?! I always get a large Iced Latte for $3.67 made by a barista in Midtown of the city.
Hi bada :) I think it really depends on the location within brooklyn, type of house, and amenities like laundry and stuff. Also rent, i believe increased significantly in the past couple years. In terms of coffee, you need to let us know where that is cuz i never see that price tag for a latte!
@@betterdanash You can get 50% discount on any coffees at Capital One Cafe if you own a Capital One credit card. And I have washer and dryer installed inside every place to live.
2-bedroom in BKLN for 1800 = rent-stabilized, or more likely even rent-controlled (which are extremely rare). 5200/month apartments are definitely market-rate in a popular neighborhood.
@@stevenhs9773 Do you use a rental broker, or do you search on websites yourself? I use a rental broker, and I'm happy because they found a rental within my budget.
@@Frost-1209 Websites, and 'cold-calling' by walking around the neighborhood that you are interested, and word-of-mouth / Facebook groups. Brokers can be good, but the commission that they charge is too much for me.
5:40 this the first time I have ever seen people using steel plate in America.
You guys are such a lovely couple ❤
thanks Randalthor! Interesting point 🤔 I don’t think I ever noticed the steel plates but glad you liked the video! 😄
@@betterdanash mostly in Japanese and Korean restaurants i guess
At first i saw your vid, i thought you're Glenn from the walking dead (TV Series).
I’m a fan of Glenn, so thank you 😄😂
Any recommendations for living in hells kitchen with a 3kish budget?
Successful couple, keep it up
thanks Peter! 🙏👍
Residents sure seem to have better work/life balance nowadays.
Hey @jhovudu11! Ithink it really depends on the specialty/program/year. Currently this is Ashley’s first yr so it’s “relatively” chill but it will ramp up drastically going fwd.
I liked this video, it shows how great it can be to live in New York! I get tired of these videos on CZcams, talking about the negative side of living in New York! And don’t get me wrong, there are negative sides to living in New York as well, just like there is every other large city in America! You guys look like you really love living in New York, as I do as well! And thanks for the restaurant suggestions, always looking for something new to try! I’ll definitely check them out!
Glad you liked the video! Yeah there are definitely both good and bad sides to nyc & we try our best to highlight both!
Wow everything you guys ate looks delicious! Had to mark it on my map :p
Hey @yelinjo! yeah they were all amazing other than the price…🫠

You guys have good vibes! Just watched this one video and subscribed! Makes me miss life before kids, LOL!
I've made a couple "Day in the life" videos, some have me at work (at Microsoft, but I'm an Executive Assistant), but I haven't really settled on the style I want to use for them, so they're kinda sporadic! (Plus, I'm a mom with kids that are in competitive sports, so it's totally a different niche.) But I really like the vibe of this video! Great job!
thanks @LowkeyKT! We’ll also check out your channel 😁
@@betterdanash 🥰🥰🥰
They're Korean right? At least they look it to me. Some nice looking folks.

I’m a native New Yorker and I hate to say it, but y’all are out of touch. 5,200 is not considered cheap for a 2 bedroom in NYC. The average is also pulled up by the ultra luxury real estate, so it’s not a super accurate reflection of most properties on the market.
Maybe it’s a good deal for your neighborhood, but that’s simply not the case for the city as a whole, even if it’s below the average.
I just think it’s important for you guys to remember that you’re coming from a place of privilege. There are tons of middle and working class families in NYC and I promise you, they wouldn’t even dream of calling the price you guys call cheap a deal.
Fair point Michelle - of all the things we were considering including space, location, w/d, quality of the building, bedroom, and more, this place was the cheapest among all the places we looked at but thanks for your comment! 🤘🙏
At first, I thought like you. But then I realized that they are recent moved NYers. They have not had time to shop around and find a rent-stabilized apartment. They are basically shopping at full retail price in brand name buildings and neighborhoods. In that respect, I can imagine that 5200 for a newly-renovated building in a 'hip' neighborhood, with washer/dryer amenities, and probably with a doorman, is considered the lowest price that they can find without searching and searching for months.
Thank God I thought it was just me who found the title and video a touch tone deaf. Some people are living on $28k a year in ny. But I guess this video’s audience is other high earning people extremely privileged people.
