- Alright you Peter Gabriel era Genesis fans, here it is. I do a shootout between the brand spankin' new Analogue Productions 45 RPM reissue and a first US pressing of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway!! Does the Analogue Productions version just blow away the first pressing? Well, tune in and see what I have to say!!!

This November will be the 50th anniversary of this album!
Yes the 45 rpm does disturb the flow and getting up every 15 minutes to change it is not good It should have been a 33 RPM release as the sound difference is very minimal
Why not save your fat belly and go for the CD instead?
I received mine yesterday. The sound quality/ mastering is excellent. There is a moderate amount of surface noise, however. Side 4 has been the most noticeable, borderline unlistenable in some sections. I have not finished listening to all four lps, so I’m hoping for better results from the last two. In past experiences, multiple listenings along with continued cleaning can significantly improve surface noise issues.
Update- I have now listened to all 4 lps, and the last two had minimal surface noise. Also, I have cleaned side 4 to a point where it is almost silent. This rerelease by Acoustic Sounds is simply mind blowing sonically, and I am sure with continued listens and cleaning that it will continue to sound better and better, giving this amazing album the justice it deserves!
P.S.- I can’t wait for Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot!
Peckham would sometimes EQ a bump in the mid bass to make recordings more punchy.
I bought Lamb when it came out and all the pressings had faults, so you were lucky with the shrink wrap version. I took it back twice no luck, so I eventually got an import but that is "quiet pressing" because of the length.
This was a great sounding recording. It was done at a house they were renting, using a mobile unit & John Burns got a great drum sound. I had the Atco version when I was at uni, but it was fairly noisy and, after I updated my system with a new Philips TT, I bought the UK Charisma version around 1977 or so. The Charisma LP set has custom labels by Hipgnosis on the discs, but no innersleeve art or lyrics. It is very quiet compared to the Atco. I bought the original US CD, which was terribly noisy (probably sourced from a safety copy tape). (I never heard the "Definitive" version of the CD.) The SACD is quite good, but the remix is not much different from the original. Very cool in surround sound! I think the complaints about the Genesis remix-remasters were mostly about the mastering of the 1st box set-- the post Peter & Steve years, although I enjoy them.
Most complaints I have heard were about all of the remixes not just the 1st box. I can’t say I have done direct comparisons though so I can’t speak to my feelings towards them.
Remixes were too compressed on CD but Vinyls were mastered well and sound stage and quality were above any of the late remastering of the original mix in my view
@@frippertronic9032 I have been told the vinyl uses the same masterings as the CDs.
@@trueaudiofiles8453 same remix yes, same mastering no. The CDs are incredibly compressed. The vinyls are absolutely fine and airy. Give it a try ?
Very interesting video. I like your quiet and serene approach. As I am from Italy and my english is not that great for sure, the transcription has been very useful. I go on following you. Thanks once again and all the very best.
Luigi
Thank you for watching and following!
A blu ray would be nice
You got SACD in surround. No more ain't needed.
I have the new AP and it does sound excellent. But I have nothing to A/B it too. Mine is silent, no surface noise.
Thanks for review. I have the first UK release, but that album is hard to listen to me because of over production and thin voices, which are amplified by effects precisely because they are thin and weak. All that together makes this album hard to listen to me. I don't think I like that album. I have it in my collection, but I don't know why.
Interesting review. I always found that album "ab fab!" I'd say its among the best sounding LPs in my collection of 300 (Charisma copy).
Back in 2004 after the remixes by Nick Davis, the guy got a lot of pushback on his work. Most of it is about brick walling and reverb. Nick didn't have the original gear used in the initial mixes and had to approximate.
My beef is that the balloon burst in Colony of Slipperman is missing. Plus, I would have liked a bit more nylon string guitar doubling Tony's organ parts.
If you accept a different mix of the album the sound quality of the vinyl version makes them a great addition for audiophile fans
I noticed that SFX missing as well. Perhaps the original element wasn't available? I do prefer Nick's version of "Los Endos" from *Trick of the Tail.* I always thought David's trick of moving to mono then stereo was kind of cool, but definitely a "gimick." Those recordings all had a different mastering engineer also, and that's where some compression may have been used.
@@frippertronic9032 I'll do a back to back!
@@ignatzmuskrat3000 keep us posted ! Interested to exchange views on the subject. Like an 1974 OG vs 2008 ND remix 33RPM vinyl master vs 75 Atlantic AP 45RPM
Boston's first album you want the one that has Wally in the dead wax. Don't you?
You are right, my bad.
Fly buzzing around I'd be looking to swat it 😂😂😂😂
lol
Brilliant video 👍
@@georgearnold8573 thank you
I got my copy last week, and I agree that the sound is awesome, and I love the packaging, too but there were more surface tics on those 4 LP's than there were on all 13 LP's together on my Miles Davis box set from VMP, pressed exquisitely by GZ. More surface tics than anything I've gotten new recently.
Yeah I have been pretty disappointed with AP standard vinyl releases over the last couple of years. The UHQRs have been getting better (they started out noisy) but the standard vinyl has been noisier than the Mofi I have been getting at the same time.
Its a thing with new vinyl, I had to take back my Ziggy Stardust half speed master from last year, full of clicks and nothing like my original Vinyls !
I heard some other reviews that said their copies were dead quiet. I told Acoustic Sounds about the issue I had and they offered to replace it and sent me a pre-paid return label. I've had great customer service from them....
@@mikewest1542 it’s not a new thing. Mid to late 70s US vinyl especially was worse with the oil shortages. There are good pressing plants and bad ones. I have been noticing a slight improvement lately as I think demand isn’t as high as it was during Covid and new plants are opening up.
@@trueaudiofiles8453, I remember getting Aladdin Sane In 1974 , my 2nd ever record and 2nd ever Bowie Record , the pressing was brilliant and was a Dynaflex Issue made in Canada .
Where do you purchase these audio files from. Is there a website?
What audio files are you referring to? I make no mention of anything but physical releases in this episode.
George Peckham is in my opinion not just a great UK mastering engineer, but the best mastering engineer of all times !
He is great but I think Kevin Gray is possibly my favourite of all time
Kevin Gray and Ryan K. Smith are my 2 favourite audio mastering engineers at the moment. Always love to see their etchings in vinyl records^
But still, I like George Peckham the most, but he is retired since years.
You know, when I see PORKY or STERLING in the dead wax of a vinyl record I always try to buy it instantly, because I know that it will sound great^@@charlesgund4812
i stand corrected i found one in the $50's
I wish it had come out on a UHQR re-issue..that would have trumped this 75th release.
The only thing that would have been gained would have been the price tag and the more expensive UHQR packaging. This pressing is very quiet and the packaging on this is very well done.
Yeah but the remastered CD of this is the best sounding of them all!
If you are referring to the 2008 reissue that is a remix not just a remaster. I personally am not a fan of the remixes.
If you want to see a sound improvement go for the 2008 remixes on vinyl
I am not a fan of any of the remixes. I don’t think they sound as good as the originals.
@@trueaudiofiles8453 This debate is common among the purists (ref. the debate on the recent remixes of the Beatles). For audiophiles, sticking to the original worn out tapes released on expensive remasters is not systematically the best option and in this case demuddling the poor mastering of the Genesis early 70s era is the main benefit of ND's 2008 remixes of the early Genesis albums so I definitely own those too and find them very fresh and airy and enjoy the difference. Why not own an OG and a remix when one likes an album after all.
The uk and us first press are pretty close. The new one has improved definition and clarity and deeper bass
Thanks for the info. I would have imagined that the UK and US first pressings were similar. I am guessing they were the same cut (done by “Porky”).
what are you talking about NM with only a vg cover on discogs is $75 then up from there
Not according to this listing.

the 4lp 45 rpm vs the OG sounds so close you had trouble? thats a huge blow to the analogue productions release.
Or the OG is just that good and there is not much you can do to improve it. There is a noticeable difference. YMMV
But there are some channels saying it is significantly better and all the reviews I’ve seen saying that have had really high end setups. You really need to consider the system it is played back on. Plus many positive reviews on the Hoffman forum.
More doesn’t necessarily mean better !
Not sure what you mean by that?
The new reissue is more money but it does sound better.
@@trueaudiofiles8453 I meant more vinyl, i have ordered this and SEBTP ,if I am disappointed I will sell them .
