In my last video I demoed and reviewed my new guitar - a 2012 Gibson SG Standard Angus Young Thunderstruck model, in ebony. Today I thought it would be cool to take a closer look at what makes the Angus Young Gibson SG different from a regular Gibson SG Standard.
I have a Gibson SG Standard 2019 model - also in Ebony. So here's a quick look at both guitars and a demonstration of what makes them different.
Which guitar do you like best? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

I've owned several SG's and my current axe is the Angus Young SG signature with vibrato which I've taken of. Made in 2000. Absolute beast of a guitar. In 4 years it has doubled in price!! Best sounding guitar I've ever owned
Your SG standard sounds phenomenal. I think you have a particularly good one. I would hold onto that guitar. The Angus one is just so damn cool though
I’ve always felt lucky with my Standard, it’s been fantastic from day 1!
@@RobGalley sound killer.. not all the 490 sounds good, aren't consistent. congratulations
@@macauley70 could i do vital remains for those angus young thunderstruck signature model Gibson SG's
I had a phenomenal sounding 498T pickup. Kick myself for selling it. Was one of the outlier ones that just had that 'special' sound.
The Angus sg might have a 'baked maple' finger board. Also may have 300k linear volume where as the 2019 is 500k audio volume. They both sound great!! I really love all these Gibson pickups! I go for the Gibson 500T in the bridge and a 490R or a 57 Classic for the neck!! Keep rocking!
That was definitely a great review and comparison. And you gave both guitars justice with your playing. You play quite well bro, keep it up.
Thanks man 🤟
@@RobGalley what brand is that guitar strap with the lightning bolt on it at 5:09?
Wow both beautiful guitars! Great video and great playing
Thanks so much! 🤟
Angus is a small man in stature. A huge MAN of rock. Standing 5’3” his hands are similarly small. A thinner neck only makes sense.
Ahhh an SG comparison as it should be :) both sound great. If you can get your hands on one of the custom shops 1 of 1000 Angus Young Signatures that has a custom wound seymor duncun bridge pickup that replicated this pickup in Angus's main guitar that rusted out.
I like both. And would be happy with either 1.Saving for and SG now.Maybe by Christmas or shorty after.
Great playing!
Great vid and playing, I loved both guitars lpl
Thanks Malcolm!
Very sweet, I enjoyed the tone from the Angus one better. They both sound good and are nice, but I do like the 57 Classic on an SG as well as the hotter Angus type pickup in the bridge.
The standard sounds ABSOLUTELY great!
Great demo and playing Rob.... I actually liked the sound of the 2019 SG .... seems to have more bite to it...... more than the Angus SG....but the vibrato on the Angus SG is absolutely killer.....you mentioned that the Angus SG is a lot lighter than the 2019 SG....wow that blew my mind...my 2019 SG , same as yours it very light....which I like a lot.....Angus's SG is definitely made to his specs.... smaller neck ....light body.... lightning bolts.....vibrato......go Angus!!!....the neck dive on the 2019 SG will happen with that strap that you used on the demo ...I have the same one....not the best quality....you probably know that a leather strap will give no dive at all.....all you need now is a Heritage Cherry Red SG to add to your collection......
I definitely need a heritage cherry one! That’s gonna be the next one I purchase I think, but not for a while 😂
The Angus young model has the Old School tuner which tend to be lighter ... My 1995 limited editon SG also has the oldschool tuners and does not suffer a lot of headdive. I think it at least adds to it... (most people that show SGs neckdiving badly have the more modern heavier style on them) ...
Also a personal theory of mine is that the SG was initially designed for having some kind of trem system on them ... like as it was a new model, they came a lot with the (really rarely functional) vibrolas and sideway vibrolas, which does add a counterweight on the body... Like imagine you would put a bigbsy on your Standard, do you think it would still neckdive as bad (or at all)?
Exactly. The tuners make a huge difference on the long neck of a SG. When I changed the crome Grovers to the traditional tuners on my SG Standard, the neck dive was completely gone. The SG Standard is a rather heavy guitar (usually weighs between 3,2 and 3,5 kg or 7.05 to 7.7 lbs) and shouldn’t neck dive at all. Even the SG 61 Standard, the Custom Shop SGs and the signature models, which tend to be lighter (around or below 3 kg or 6.6 lbs) usually don’t neck dive as they all got the light weight vintage tuners.
I didn't detect a noticeable "Oh, I want that one!" difference in the two. I bought a Standard identical to yours three months ago to jam to Johnny Winter on Alexa in order to increase speed and dexterity and I love it. I play an *Epiphone EJ200 acoustic at my solo gigs, but "like an electric". I'm a little confused on this "neck dive" problem. It has never even occurred to me, and perhaps it's because I use suede leather straps and the "rough" side is against my neck and shoulder and keeps my guitars in place. Hey, you put on quite an informative demo and I thank you.
*The Epiphone EJ200 was $300 new and apparently one of those rare ones whose build quality and sound is superb. I love my Gibson Jumbo 200, but honestly, it's the backup guitar to my "cheapo cheapo" ebony Epiphone because the Epiphone slightly "outsings " it.
Both sound awesomme! what amp are you using?
I have short stubby fingers , so I like a short scale length but need the spacing between strings !
I think my SG 2019 exactly like yours is the easiest playing guitar I ever touched. The low cryogenic freats and the way the nut on mine was cut allows me a very low almost fret touching string action without any string bus. So effortless playing guitar.
Hi mate, nice playing and demo, does it make a difference with the wrap over strings?
The only difference I’ve noticed is that I break less strings when they’re wrapped over the tailpiece. There’s less of an angle between the tailpiece & bridge which apparently means less tension. It could just be luck 😂
nice playing bruv! making those axes sing! what amp sim are you running on both? cheers
Sorry for the late reply - This is actually a stock Garageband preset called Old School Punk. It's actually pretty decent!
Didn't know the Angus one had a thinner neck, I'd like that. I need to have a go one day!
I just went through the process of buying a narrow neck guitar. They sure are hard to come by. I ended up with a Music Man Stingray, which has a similar neck width to the Angus Young SG. Check out Music Man guitars if you're still looking for a narrow neck. It's a game changer for those of us with small hands for sure.
@@joshs7642 Aw thanks man. I’ve got a few Ibanez guitars which I’ve sanded the neck down on and made them thinner than stock.
I want an Angus Young signature SG
I have a 2008 Angus Young Signature. Try experimenting with the volume on the Angus pickup. The sound does not become quieter - it is cleared. In addition to SG AY Signature, I have SG HP 2017 where the classic 57 and classic 57 plus are installed. The Angus guitar is much more versatile to my taste.
It’s great to play it like Angus would & experiment with the volume control for that sweet spot!
Both sounded great...but if i am picking it's the Standard every time. The pup's sound a bit hotter n more middy to me....the Angus one sounds like the Standard might with its volume pot rolled off slightly. And well, skinny necks aren't for me - I like the Gibson 50s rounded profile a lot. The only thing I prefer at least looks wise is the Kluson tuners. My SG is a Cherry red Standard with the Grover's but my previous 2 had the Kluson's, I agree the Grover's definately feel/function slightly better though. And I guess along with the fatter neck, more wood = more weight, and the extra 6oz on the metal Grover tuners means they to are gonna add more to the neck dive. But I never had a problem with neck dive because I use a grippy strap or a nylon strap with a grippy shoulder pad on it...then it becomes a none issue. I hear so much about neck dive with SGs and yes its true enough, but the cure is so so easy. If it wasn't and I had to live with it, then I think that would tip me away from loving SGs. I have a Les Paul as well and whilst I think the LP looks nicer (and why i sold my last SG but kept the LP) I ended up recently getting another SG because I missed it since I sold my last one 6yrs ago to fund a Mesa Express 5:50 2x12 combo...long story short that was a big mistake and so glad to now have an SG again - they play SO MUCH NICER IMO than a LP....so light and comfy with unhindered upper fret access and 95% of the sound is there. The only thing I think the LP has is a bit more sustain on high register notes and a bit more bottom end. I don't think most people could tell a LP or an SG apart in a bandmix if they couldn't see which was being played...they both do that fat gibson mid rich humbucker sound. I've compared them side by side so many times....
To my ear, over laptop speakers. I think the Angus Young SG has slightly more powerful pickups, more gain, brighter. When you play the SG Standard it's almost like there's something covering the speaker and it's just that little bit duller but the sounds are very similar.
Love em both
Me too, I’m lucky to have them 🤟
I don’t think they make the Angus Young Signature model anymore (with the Lightning bolts) they stopped production around 2009? Always wanted one but they are VERY expensive.
My 2000 Epiphone SG I slammed the same set up in, except a 57 plus for that extra umpf.
Rock on mate 🤘🤘🤘
You too man 🤟😎
How much cost the Angus Signature Guitar?
Above all, I chose a guitar for the sound it produces and on that, I prefer the SG. The Angus Young model is very well balanced which is its strong point but 3 mm difference at the nut is huge as you say and you have to get used to it. So, to conclude, I prefer the SG! 🎸
I gotta agree there!
Is the Angus wider or more narrow of the 2?
Do you know if the actual neck itself (not the fretboard) is made from maple as on the ultra-expensive lightning bolt SG - the one with a 50+150 units limited run ?
I think the neck is mahogany - but I’m not 100%!
@@RobGalley OK. The reason I think that Gibson used maple on the ultra-expensive one was that the amount of remaining wood with the narrow neck is so small so that a headstock/neck break is just waiting to happen. They probably couldn't afford that to happen on such an expensive guitar. To compensate for the brighter combination of maple/ebony they have a Seymour Duncan Custom humbucker with AlNiCo2 magnets that takes off a bit of the bright edge. I ordered an SG kit with a maple/ebony neck/fretboard and can testify that it makes a big difference in brightness. The standard SG with mahogany/rosewood has a significantly mellower tone.
The Maple/AlNICo2 combo has been used in Les Paul's for years to tame the brightness of the maple top cap.
@7:18 that lick is so sick
Awesome
I have two black gibson SG’s too. A 05 standard. And 02 gothic.
The Matte black ones? I remember those!
How much is a Gibson SG Angus Young Thunderstruck from 2009 worth?
Sg Angus signature feels good to hear.
where do your buy this Angus young signatur Thunderstruck edition?
EBay for this one!
Great vid and much appreciated. But watching you wave those expensive guitars around like badminton rackets from Dollar General gives me huge anxiety. Rock on.
The Grover tuners are heavier than Klusons thus more neck dive. The standard should have a 498T in the bridge. Not a 490T as you stated. The 498T is much hotter than a 490T.
i detest large pickguard SG's but unfortunately they have a fatter neck which i prefer
They both sound great. Angus one is slightly hotter and raunchier..
tenho a impressão que o som da standard é mais fina e limpa, nao sei, ouvindo assim da a impressão. A angus é mais grave acho, o som das duas é boa mas a Standard pra mim é a melhor
the angus one looks more high end... the body contours etc.
Originally he had the neck thinned by a luthier I'd assume.
Maybe the lighter Klusons help remedy the neck dive
Does the STD still dive with that other strap?
Great review BTW 👏
It dives but it’s nowhere near as bad as it’s made out to be
You look more comfortable playing the standard SG than Angus. I think the SG Standard is a phenomenal guitar and there's no reason getting the Angus beef model unless you're a collector.
Fantastic i have sg 🎸🎶💥
The Angus signature model has more bite. Those pick ups are wound hotter.
Without question the standard sounded better, fuller and louder playing lead licks….but that imbalanced neck dive blows…
Angus sounded tighter, compressed and quieter and probably better on rhythm…B
And looks cooler…
I have a red standard. You moved the guitars zo much that i was waiting till you bang the head in the wall of at the desk
The lightning bolts are to cringe for me. Its something a 16 yr old would have on his guitar. Bummer
I like the Standard better. Nicer tone. More articulated.Thats just me...
Sounds better with the Schaffer replica
The neck is thinner for the simple reason that angus is a really small guy. He’s got small hands. Simple.
I don’t know why , but I prefer the tone of the standard .. weird
The standard is slightly less harsh & has slightly less treble to my ears. Not sure if it comes across in the video!
Thunder struck guitar just had the right sound. It was obvious.
The Standard Sounds better
Angus and his brother are tiny people, that's why his SG looked so big
I thought the standard sounded great.
It does! I’d argue it sounds better, as much as I love the Angus model 🤟
Its an holeý grayl
