    6:26 Yeah, you nailed it. Those tactics are a part of cycling, so it's fair enough. Far from a gentleman move though, as he himself also gained a huge benefit for the high pace set by Vingegaard and Pogačar as they dropped Urán. He could've helped himself and the two others by pulling as well and gaining even more time on Urán. But he went greedy. But perhaps it was the best move for him. Maybe he would've been dropped as well if he had pulled his weight? Who knows? Maybe what he did was the only thing he could do.
    For me, it was also a bit annoying because I rooted for Vingegaard and Pogačar. Pogačar because he's such a young superstar and I want to see him break records, and Vingegaard because I'm Danish. So had Carapaz pulled and got dropped by Pogačar and Vingegaard, then all the better in my eyes :)
    7:15 I sure hope Pogačar goes for the 3rd stage win and the polka jersey like last year. Then he'll even have a chance to better his record from last year when he won 3 jerseys and 3 stages if he can manage the last TT as well. That would be epic to watch, and oh my what a statement to make for Roglič and Bernal waiting at the Vuelta.

    • @epincion
      @epincion Před 3 lety +6

      I’m ambivalent about Pog winning the Polka Dot jersey simply by winning the last two stages which the race committee have given double points this year (as they did on Ventoux). It makes a mockery of the PD jersey comp to make it mathematically possible to win that comp this way. There needs to be a rethink about a better distribution of mountain points across the whole race.

    • @DirtyPoul
      @DirtyPoul Před 3 lety +13

      @@epincion I actually disagree with that criticism. I think it's awesome that you can now go for both high placements in the GC and go for the polka dot jersey as well rather than having the polka dot jersey be reserved for only breakaway riders who have no chance for a top 10 placement in the GC. I think it's awesome that there's this secondary category that gives GC guys an incentive to attack in situations that would not otherwise be ideal if you thought of it only in terms of winning time for the GC.

    • @Mirongawaritane
      @Mirongawaritane Před 3 lety +11

      @@DirtyPoul Agree with epincion. The 40-point HC climbs are not good for an interesting climbers competition. It's also not good if one particular stage has a large percentage of the tour's climbers points. That happened a few years ago when Romain Bardet won the polka dot jersey. Romain Bardet is a great rider but he was having a bad tour de France that year, until he saved it with a long breakaway on the stage that had the most points. The climbers competition should be won by a rider who climbs well throughout the tour, not a GC rider who is good on a few particular climbs or a breakaway rider who is good on just one day.

      "But he went greedy". Errr... At this moment, Ineos and Carapaz have nothing. No stage win, no certainty about the podium. JV and UAE have stage wins (two each). A gentleman move (pulling though) wouldn't necessarily have delivered any more time gains on Uran. And as far as I know, gentleman moves aren't even considered in gentleman's races. There are no gifts at this level and you try to ride your best race for your goals in the race. Carapaz gave it his best to win the stage and in the end, he gained time. So a fine ride within his possibilities, and a joy to watch the tactical battle.

    Gaudu from a late break (or jumping off from the peloton in the final climb) makes a lot of sense for me: he is behind on enough time where GC favorites shouldn't care, and his form is coming such that he should be able to finish it off...unless Carapaz is under orders from Ineos to salvage the TdF for the team and try for the stage. In that case Pogi looks to piss/rain all over their parade for back-to-back stages.

    Carapaz hollywood tactics is normal in cycling, but it is a double edge sword, it may work on one's advantage but it may also work against one. showing weakness sometimes motivate one's opponent to attack. And that is exactly what transpired. TP...attacked knowing Carapaz had used-up his last drops of energy, thus Carp can no longer keep up and Vinie even took 2nd place.
