One thing you forgot to mention is that you can also follow labels to keep up with their new releases, not just specific bands
Excellent point! I follow a label or two simply because the artists on those labels don't have their own Bandcamp page and rely instead on their label page. Thanks for posting this.
A comparison. I put out some instrumental music at the beginning of last year on Bandcamp. I didn't promote and got around 300 listens but no sales. Not a lot but I'll take it. This year I started loading my solo material with vocals on Drooble and have close to 1,400 streams. Again, not many but I also didn't promote there. I just loaded 7 songs. I released 6 songs on Spotify during the same time period and worked my ass off promoting it. Facebook ads, watching and reading all the promo material I could find, did the social media thing and so on. The result? Just 850 streams. I write indie/alt music. Spotify and Soundcloud (oh yeah I loaded my music there and got around 200 streams without promo) cater mainly to Hip Hop, Rap, Pop and EDM. If you don't play those genres or have instrumental intros longer than 10 seconds you already have one foot in the hole. I am looking at ways to get people to Bandcamp once my band is done recording and ready to release. Spotify can suck it as far as I am concerned.
Sounds like you've had to wade through a lot of online muck. That sucks. Hope you finally find a solution that works for you.
Really Interesting Rory. Thanks for the insight mate. Work not waisted. Link us to our stuff if you want a few more listens eh.
Keep making instrumentals, the rap/edm folks dont know that an instrument sings just like vocals.
As an indie artist from the Caribbean, I don't have any friends that really use Bandcamp that could introduce me to its features, so after 2 years of my music on the platform and still no organic discovery, your video gave me some fresh insight into using Bandcamp.
Thanks for this video.
This was a wonderfully useful video. I’ve had a Bandcamp page for quite some time but certainly have not been using it to its full potential. Thank you for the tutorial. Really enjoying your channel. Already one of my favorites and I watch many in the vinyl community, probably for three years or so.
Thanks! As an artist just starting to build my catalogue on Bandcamp, it was interesting to hear from a buyer/fan perspective.
I use bandcamp to buy lots of physical media like tapes and I sell my own label merch there too. Shipping rates can be pretty high though depending on the artists or label.
Amazing and very informative upload. Thank you.
Is all of this still relevant
in Dec. 2022 ?
Have a Positive day.
Hi,
thanks for the video - i used this as a starting poitn for my uni experiment where i compared earnigns of different music services!
Yes, only way to acquire some underground self release stuff. Most recently Purchased my Wraith Absolute Power Vinyl via Bandcamp🤘
That's right, you've talked about Wraith in your videos. Need to check more into them but I definitely just now followed their Bandcamp so I won't forget. Hey look, I'm actually heeding my own advice in my own video! Fantastic!
Your bandcamp collection is excellent mate
Thanks! I have a number of good people on the service whom I follow that introduce me to many great bands and albums, which helps out immensely,
Just ordered up Wraith-Absolute Power cd from bandcamp early this morning. 🤘
That's still on my Bandcamp wishlist. Should probably get it one day.
Sir, can I use bandcamp music in my youtube videos? Will it work if I also give the music owner credits with a tag of "support music artists"?
Interesting video! A question: How does bandcamp work when you upload covers? For example, if I upload piano works from protected content .. do I get help from Bandcamp or not?
I wasn't sure but I found this article that might help... www.affordablesonglicensing.com/bandcamp
Thanks for commenting.
Hey Matt....good vid ....question : does Bandcamp allow you to download in more than one format , once you purchase ? Let’s say I download the first time in flac, and then want am Aiff version . ...thanks ....
So, I just re-downloaded one of my purchases in AAC in addition to the MP3s I originally downloaded and it worked out fine. I even tried the files out and they're good. So, the answer to your question is a resounding YES! Thanks for checking in.
The day they will allow to install facebook pixel in order to scale up the sales seriously and they'll fix the problem that every audio is easily downloadable from every artist page and the day that they'll do a plugin to interface it with shopify or wordpress, it will be a great day! If they don't give the opportunity to track the sales process is a problem to works great with facebook ads with big budgets
Bandcamp is great, not only do I find excellent music (almost 250 physical releases purchased) but I have also made a few good friendships with a couple label owners. I probably do 50% of my total buying on there.
I'm shopping there even more now. Just ordered the Pounder album as well as the latest High Spirits, which was sold out forever but managed a repress very recently.
Can't believe that there is no such video FAQ in my language. This helped me already but if I start buying albums onto my pc, how can I enjoy them on my mobile phone with my vlc player? Bc on my pc the sound is sadly damaged so I can only use my mobile right now
Hey fellow kids, keep on rockin on 👍
As a vaporwave and synth-pop fan Bandcamp is the best.
Funny you mention that because I just got The Uncanny Valley by Perturbator in the mail on pink vinyl. Loving it! Thanks for checking out my video.
Great site (if you are an established artist) but why oh why when you opt for not receiving messages when you follow an artist does bandcamp persist in sending them ? There seems to be no way of stopping this spamming.
Should you sell your music on there, or just offer it for free in exchange of email?
Selling music on the service is a little outside my purview as I don't have a band. I'm sure you could contact some of the smaller bands on Bandcamp and ask them. My guess is the smaller bands might be more receptive to sharing info, or even have more time to do so.
Can anyone buy from others countries in bandcamp??
I would imagine so. Set up an account and maybe inquire from a few bands you like. I'm sure they'd steer you in the right direction. Either way, they'd know better than I would. Thanks for writing.
but how do i even create a page i cant find the option ?
i figured it out you have to choose a profile that is a an artist or a label and then you have to actually put content on your account so that you can access the page design tools. Bandcamp should have a more straight forward video on how to do this step by step which actually explains that you cannot design your page until you first make sure you to choose the artist/label option when first signing up and then you have to put content on there to then be able to design the page just for those who are not tech savvy. i just figured this out on my own just through trying everything to see if it would work but for others its not that straight forward :)
Glad you figured it all out. Yes, Bandcamp would benefit from some how-to videos, to be sure.
Downloading music is a mess
I use Amazon instead
Sometimes the shipping can be deal breaker. I guess it depends of how far the band lives?
Yeah, some places are better about that than others. Some countries in Europe are particularly steep, so I have to weigh my options with them. Overall, vinyl collecting can get a little pricey. Nature of the beast.
Love you video mate👍👍 I'm new to You tube and I got over 1000 Sub scribers. I would like to put good music on my video with Bandcamp, How does it work do I buy the digital music, so I don't get copyrighted...? You know what I mean... DrDisRespect Pro gamer used BandCamp a lot of music on his video. Would you be kind enough to do a Video Tutorial? 💯
Thanks! As for using Bandcamp music in your CZcams videos, it's likely that some of it will trigger their Content ID system (that is, copyright detection). CZcams does have an audio library you can use for free, or there are paid services out there whereby you can license music for use on CZcams. But, that's all I've got on that.
Your background music shouldn't be as loud as your voice... very distracting.
I'm a musician. How do I create my own monetized music streaming app for my music? I already made a free media player app with AppsGeyser. There is no point paying music distributors to place my music on streaming services, only to get back a fraction of a penny per stream. I'd rather stream my music on my own app for pennies. No middle men stealing from me. Anyone knows how, please message me.
I don’t have that info but hoping one of my viewers might. So, yeah, someone help this guy out!
What are some of your favorite reasons for using Bandcamp? If you haven't tried the service, would you consider it now that you'd seen this video? Any other thoughts? Leave it all in the comments below.
You can get news from artists by email
You can follow people so you can see what they are buying
Artists can do special offer with pay as you want and the minimum price you can buy an album
The editorial music suggestion is great
