It was particularly distressing and depressing to see the ruins of the gutted and abandoned hospital. Pity the residents of Pahokee who are now deprived of a hospital and decent and needed medical care. Ain't the U.S.A.s 'private and solely for profit' medical system - and capitalism in general for that matter - grand? This and the rest of the rot, decay and destruction in places like Pahokee is the result.

It was never much of anything to begin with. It was just a sugarcane farming area. Lake Okeechobee overflowed its banks a few times and deep sixed hundreds of people around that area back in like the 1920s through the 1960s. That's one of the things that has reduced its population and kept it small.

*Strange Fact:* About 1 in every 30 residents is a registered s-x offender (the average town in America has about 1 registered offender per 2500 people). A ministry group set up a community called Miracle Village nearby, which provides rehabilitation and housing for offenders. It became so popular that there are rarely openings, so offenders hoping to get in began to move and settle in the closest community to Miracle Village, which is Pahokee.

Never been there, after seeing this video wouldn't want to go there, especially with the crime rate and it looking like there's absolutely nothing happening there. @georgemckenna462 Před 4 lety +14

Why would they spend so much time at the abandoned hospital? Please, allow me to clarify; It's because this community / town needs finishing off.
With NAFTA and the TPP, Big Sugar is moving out of Florida. There are "better places" with slave wages and no environmental protection over seas. The sugar industry has been choking out Lake Okeechobee with algee blooms for decades. Wealthy locals are good and sick of it.
1,000 people a day move into Florida, many are retirees flush with cash. Many of theses same retirees do NOT care to live too close to the coast with it's traffic, crime and hurricanes!!! Instead, it would be nice to live by a giant inland fresh water lake, in a big new house inside a gated community, with a 36 hole golf course ...I think you're getting the picture.
It is not as well known but a number of working class folks are moving out of Florida and California for more affordable living, or just to survive. Just listen to Jose, on Florida Hood Vlogs.
This quiet video will help depress the real estate prices and drive out the remaining diehard residents. This way the developers can swoop into an ideal location that already has established utilities and infrastructure.

You're very right about what you say at the end about people having no idea what's out there. I was a Florida surveyor who spent years out in Pahokee, Belle Glade, and Port Myakka and people have absolutely no idea what's out there. Pahokee actually looks a thousand times better than when I was there in the late '90s early 2000s. There's also a time when they burn the sugarcane fields which turns the place into a surreal hellish environment. Smoke everywhere, Ash falling from the sky, and black dust kicked up from hundreds of sugarcane trucks. Scrawny little rabbits used to run out of the fields when they were burning them and hit the canals where the Gators would go nuts engorging themselves on them along with beat up trucks owned mostly by Haitians also harvesting these rabbits for free protein. And I'm sincere when I tell you late 90s downtown Pahokeei was something people would not even believe. Open murders right in front of the liquor store hang out. Shanties with blankets for doors. No trash pickup. Pahokee looks a hell of a lot better than what it did if you can believe it or not. Sugar cane fields and prisons. That's the only other thing out there other than those towns. I think people think I exaggerate when I used to tell them stories about these areas. In reality it was worse than I could possibly explain.

If JONES wrote their name in 8-foot-tall letters on the outside, would the police stop them? Wouldn't it be ironic if THAT was the only public investment the building received? Who does JONES expect to see their name? Are they alive? Is Bright Sun Films the only reason JONES's name is spoken?

Many in people are still working to get people of color the equal rights that white people have. This isn’t something new, and has never been and justice must be served! Wow...the darker side of Florida! I have just recently moved to this town to recover from Cancer and it is filled with the most joyful, honest welcoming and sweet people I have ever come across. Yes the infrastructure is in bad shape and it is a town in sever economic decline but that is overshadowed by the peacefulness of the area, and the warmth and history of the people I've met. White, Black, Latin, Middle East...etc., it makes no matter, they open their hearts willfully to their neighbors old and new. This is a place where people see only you...not your house, your car, your dress, your possessions. Be you rich or poor, you are first a neighbor. This is a community that comes together and helps each other...old values are maintained while welcoming in the modern world for the benefit of it's citizens. It's an old town and it wants to stay that way because, the alternative isn't always better. There is love and joy here. Sure there are issues....but what city or town doesn't have them. As far as it being the next real estate boom....you don't know much about the Muck that made this farming community that it is. Visit again and visit with the people....rather than the bricks and bees.

A great case in point of how small, seemingly dead towns can in fact be wonderful places... Sopchoppy, FL (I feel like I spelled that wrong... :s)
Anyway... Sopchoppy is up in the Panhandle near Tallahasee. Their school moved to Medart due to lack of population... Yes, it is THAT small. The actual town itself consists of around 9-10 businesses all grouped together in what would normally be considered the downtown district... Except that's pretty much all there IS to Sopchoppy and I don't think it has changed significantly since around 1950. All this said, however, you will never meet a friendlier group of folks in your life. My great aunt and one of my first cousins used to live there (sadly, both have since passed away) and I have not only had great childhood memories of the town, going there in recent years have simply affirmed my wonderful experiences. It's quiet, yes... And there aren't too many young folks around due to it being VERY economically depressed...
But... When I need a break and want to just relax, a trip to Sopchoppy does the trick EVERY time! 😊

Most cities I've visited in the US that were like this grew attached to what they once were and never realized or never try to somehow embrace change. My little town was once full of factories but as factories moved and the building started getting abandoned and the amount of money they used to receive was no longer coming, the city hall started charging more on the residents which started to move. A couple years ago the river side of town, where most factories were got flooded really bad to the point that 90% of the houses and buildings were not recoverable. So, now the city does not have money to fix that part of town and left to the abandonment. In recent years a couple of people tried to get the city to transform that part of town into a "urban farm" kind thing but the city blocked them and told that this city is industry friendly(but no industry coming back). That part of town remain abandoned and the city owns the land and do not have the money to do anything.

Super nice climate, right on Lake Okeechobee, and only 35-40 miles from West Palm Beach or Jupiter. You are right-when an area becomes desirable (and affluent people start buying property); all of a sudden, things happen-roads get fixed, services improve, etc. this is exactly what happened in the South End of Boston-since about 1960, the area was in decline..abandoned buildings, trash filled streets, heavy crime and drug dealing. You could buy a 3 story brownstone building for $50,000 (now worth over $2 million).. The transformation was amazing.
