I moved to New York and met my wife. Now she moved back with me to the Bay Area.

Born and raised in NY now live in VA. Don't plan on going back. I suggest looking at places in Brooklyn/Queens for more space at a better price. I always thought night life would never get old until COVID, in which then I realized that I gained very little from bar hopping and eating out every weekend.

I randomly came through this video and I don't know why but it is giving me a vibe that you are not happy and feeling depressed in your life as of now and the glow and smile is lost on your face

really liking what your content has become! I think it's shifted at the same time as I have been in life (I’m nearing the end of my computer science degree and deciding which path to take with that which will make me happiest). also, I’d love to see/hear more about your muai thai if you plan to make any videos related to it (I do a martial art too)

I've definitely considered going to New York and am looking forward to how your experience is there!

Hey Chris, just wanted to let you know I really appreciate your content. I subscribed a few years ago when I still in high school thinking of majoring in computer science. This last summer I've interned at "FAANG" after completing my freshman year, and I definitely have this nihilistic feeling of "now what." I've got a full life ahead of me to do interesting things though, so I appreciate you giving your point of view as you follow your interests after graduation. I'm the oldest child so you definitely feel like a big brother haha. You, Tren, and Joma are some of my favorites. But I feel like you try to be much more personable than the rest of those guys which is a trait I appreciate in your videos.

I will agree that there are more interesting people in New York. It's just a lot more people, far more concentrated, and they're all going to have different experiences, different backgrounds. And all those different experiences are gonna make them more unique, thus they have better taste in music, art, fashion, food, etc (allegedly). I just cannot imagine enjoying New York when it's raining, so try to go whenever it's not raining/flooding.

Uhm.... well, you're in kind of a unique position as it's very likely that if you wanted a higher paying job then it would probably be relatively easy for you to get it given your experience and background. Usually that's what "opportunity" is meant when you're talking to others about why they moved to a particular city.
Personally, the "figuring it out" for me is more or less navigating all of the chaos of my life and in the midst of that there are potential opportunities that present themselves as I go. I guess I use that term, "figuring it out", as a catch all for navigating all of the randomness that comes up. In truth, though, population density does give you a tremendous amount of options so that "figuring it out" has quite a bit of depth to it when you're in a city.
I find this video interesting, though, as I ultimately am running the heck away from New York. I found a spot out in South Dakota that I can live so reasonably that if I want to deliver pizzas professionally for the rest of my days then I could live comfortably doing it. I had quit my job as well as I'd saved up some cash and, among other things, I wanted to potentially take a break. I'd been working at a software firm in NY for almost 4 years at this point and I mostly spend my free time trying to improve my skills as interviewing as a software developer can be ROUGH.
I think it's pretty reasonable to try out a couple of months in the big city. You can always try something else as well, it's not like you're going to be stuck there forever. I think Joma went to NY, too, and I thought I remembered seeing a video of the two of you chatting so you could probably see what he's up to, too.
I am a Christian, so my view of things is a bit different than others. I have a few key reasons to leave. The first is that my parents had lost both of their homes (that's a long story) so if I wanted to stay long term I'd be staying in either an expensive home or an expensive apartment. In either case, it's going to be expensive. I wasn't making that kind of money at my job and I wasn't too comfortable with trying to bargain for more (and there were some other critical reasons that I left that I won't get into here). I'm looking to start a family as well (God-willing) and so the difficulty of owning a home in order to provision for that family became a serious concern for me, too. I mean we're talking you would pay almost $1,000 a month just in property taxes for a typical middle class home; That's before you even consider paying for the house itself!
The other main issue is that, as a Christian, I believe that the heart of man is, generally speaking, evil. If every man is at his core evil, then that means a densely populated area also means a high density of evil. I think that's generally true as you don't typically think of walking around at night in a dark alley in New York City as a safe thing to do, however walking around at night in more suburban or rural areas is typically a lot less dangerous.
So yeah, for me it's more a matter of provisioning for the safety and security of a family that I'm preparing for. I guess it could be fun for some time, but again, I'm a bit older and I'm only getting older so I don't want to waste time just having fun. There is something to be said for having the energy to spend time with your children and the younger you are the more energy you'll have when you're raising them and spending time with them. I think the time I spend with my children and wife will probably be more valuable to me than anything else I could do in my life (besides worshiping God, which is the most valuable thing you can do).
