I wholeheartedly agree! Neal is a great artist but he should not change his old artwork in any way whatsoever. We want his 60s and 70s art to be exactly how it was then, and without the garishly ugly bright colors ! And yes, Batman Odyssey was a complete load of garbage too!
But new inking can give the stories a more modern and fresh look. This look makes it in my opinion more attractive for new readers.
I agree with you 100%. I feel that "remastering" classic comics to give them a modern look is totally unnecessary.
Great review, thank you. Adams' Batman has always been my favorite, but faithful reproductions of the originals would have been a much better product. Glad I saw this before buying.
Agreed. Adams' re-inking and re-coloring is an atrocity. Saved me money for other books, but his self blasphemy is incredibly disappointing.
I WAS VERY UNHAPPY with the Adams Omnibus. I didn't know it would include ODDYSEY. I wasn't expecting re-inking and re-coloring. i was pissed off.
that about sums it up!!
I love that you move around your comic book room (fortress of solitude) when you shoot the videos! It give me a better perspective of your collection 😃
Thank you for noticing !! I try to keep it fresh.
I remember when someone recolored Berni Wrightson’s Batman vs Swamp Thing, “Night of the Bat”, and it just didn’t look right. The modern colors made the characters look like they were dipped in oil.
Thank you so much for this! I didn't knew it was re-colored/inked and I didn't knew that the Odyssey run is included. I was frustrated that it sold out and is now expensive but now .. relieved. Keep up the great work! Love your videos!
Happy I could help!
Instead of reinking and changing the colors I would not have minded just a black and white version with the original ink work. I had a collection of classic Batman stories that included black and white versions of the original Man Bat trilogy and the classic Secret of the Waiting Graves by Neal Adams. These versions were beautiful and and perfectly captured the dynamics of Neal Adams illustrations! Love your channel! This was a great and thoughtful review!
thank you for the kind words!
Totally agree with every word. The new Swamp Thing Moore run in Absolute Edition is recolored, too. I have the originals and trades already, but it's disappointing.
After all which " tpb" if there is out there, is more close to the original ?? 😬
Thanks 👍🏻
Do you know if the 3 separate volumes of this are also repainted digitally like this one? thanks
Look, I'm brand new here, but this whole "drink root beer while reviewing comics" thing is awesome. For that, you've earned yourself a subscriber.
woo hoo!! Thank you!!
Omnidog's Vault no problem, man.
Great video! I hear you 1,000% percent! I agree. I think in my opinion: It's similar to say, like comparing hearing a song on a vinyl record to that on a CD or digital copy. To this day technology still can't replicate the warmth of that analog original sound... Good video, Omni!
good comparison!
9:30 He must be a huge fan of George Lucas....
Blue G my thoughts exactly watching this hahaha!
My love of Batman started with Chuck Dixon ( I was born in 82) when I really got into collecting in 93 I discovered The Adams era. Is there any version of this Omnibus with original Inking and coloring?
What Batman comic/ graphic novel would you recommend for me, I like dark gritty with really weird characters.
I have read alot of them, the big ones mostly, favourite being long Halloween and haunted Knight but looking for some hidden gems.
Thanks
Excellent video review. It is always refreshing to find someone that takes the time to patiently explain his or her point view. You have rightfully earned a new subscriber. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much!
My friend JP is so right.
+1
P.S. 6:15 He'll never know you exist? :)
Cheers Omnidog really enjoyed the video. I'm a big batfan and I've been considering the Neal Adams omnibus so as you do, I came to CZcams to take a look at some reviews (and to see if the artwork looked as bad as some have said). I don't really mind the art too much but I see where you are coming from when you say it just doesn't look like a book from its time and looks more like a newer generation book. I would have preferred the art to remain as it was when it was released like I'm sure most people would but how often do we get what we really want from DC? I've took your advice and went with the illustrated Neal Adams volumes to escape that crazy looking Odyssey story (Book 1 came autographed by the man himself and with a COA so hopefully it might actually be his autograph). Keep up the good work. I look forward to watching more of your vids. That rootbeer looks delicious btw.
Thank you Dom, I appreciate the kind words!
I’m a huge fan of originality in comics, especially those old silly ads. Glad I came across this video bc I almost considered buying this book. I really enjoyed this review & pretty much agree on the points you made. BTW we need a petition to have a original reprint of all Neil Adams comics...
Im new to Neal Adams art. Where can I get the original work collected in its original format?
unfortunately, his original artwork is mostly in the comic books themselves. You can get the black and white editions with original linework but no color.
Very good observations re: Adams with O'Neil, as well as Frank Mill being influenced by O'Neil.
I considered buying this omnibus but decided not to because of the coloring. Instead I purchased volume 6 of Showcase presents Batman. An inexpensive black and white book that emphasizes the great art. Thanks for another great video!
Smart choice!
looks like that's what i'm getting. i love all the marvel essentials and though i would like to see the colors, just the inks themselves are very powerful.
I couldn't understand what I was looking at until I read another omnibus about two weeks ago. His new inks and colors turned his original work into a near duplicate of The Fourth World by John Bryne Omnibus inks and colors, I kid you not. I just didn't make the connection until your video came back after finishing another video via autoplay.
Oh man! That’s really interesting!! I haven’t read the Byrne book but now I’m curious about it!!
Where do you get your root beer from??
LOL, I get my current favorite, Frostop, at the local hardware store! They have a cooler filled with all kinds of obscure sodas
Great video Jess as always , Great and fair points you made in the video I too have The Batman by Neal Adams Omnibus. I guess since I did not start reading comics until the early 90's I don't have huge a problem with it as other comic book readers do. I have I heard those same complaints and thoughts when the new trade paperback re releases of The Star Wars Original Trilogy Comic Adaptations from Marvel came out earlier last year plus X-Men 1991 re mastered the ones that have the new cover art I'm talking about. With that being said adding the recoloring it sometimes not all the time enhances the art even more. It makes it more appealing to younger readers. In the end, it is all about indeed preserving the art for future generations. So when either Marvel or DC Comics , or even Indie publishers recolors it's older comics for the trades and omnibuses it makes them better a bit not all the time but close to it. Some older fans don't like re coloring a lot of the time but when the colors and issues have degraded sometimes a little recoloring helps. But I agree with you Jess this was not the best example of comic book re coloring. Keep up the great work sir and happy comic book reading !!!
Fair points Kenny! Thanks for the comments and for watching!
So is there no way of collecting these stories in their original or close to original coloring? Because that would be disappointing. I gotta agree with you the revamped colors/inks really take away from the overall look and feel.
The Brave and Bold Bronze Age omnibus features Adams Batman work that is unadulterated, but i can't think of any other Deluxe Edition or omnibus that has Adams Batman work that hasn't been tinkered with. I would love to be wrong about this!! I'm unaware of any trades that collect this stuff on nice paper. I think the Ra's stories have been reprinted in original form.
Ah that's right! Some great Adams covers and interior work in that book. Thanks for the reply. Bummer all the other collected editions have the recoloring/reinking. But maybe DC will eventually rerelease those Batman and Detective issues unadulterated. We can only hope!
I know a lot of people hate black and white, but Showcase Presents Batman vols. 5-6 have most, if not all, of the O'Neill/Adams run
@@LWilson19 If anything, I would prefer black and white drawings over this atrocity Adams did.
I feel the same about the recoloring of the Simonson Thor Omnibus.
I just don't understand what the creative people are thinking when they do stuff like that!
I am soooooo glad that I didn't pick this up! Thanks fella, another good video! Without question IMO one of the best channels on youtube currently, certainly the best for comic reviews!
Big love Jess!
I also feel the need to add that it reminds me of what George Lucas, did to Star Wars.......
Why do they always feel the need to ruin their original masterpieces?
excellent analogy
Woo Hoo! Thanks Puff!!
I didn't realize Adams re-inked things. The new colors seems criminal enough, reshaping the feel of the art (in a very negative way for me)
Hey, do the 3 smaller hardcover volumes have the same problem?
dan gilmore unfortunately yes
subscribed and hit the bell. I didn't know there were channels out there that just talked about the love and knowledge of comics. appreciate your content. I do comic statue reviews but I have so many comics I'm considering adding this to my channel. great channel my brother....
STATUE FANATIC thank you ! I really appreciate it!
I got the Odyssey hardcover. Boy. It is the first time that I thought about just throwing a comic into the trash. It is a mess and not the Adams stuff I grew up reading. Thank you Dennis O'Neil, so much.
OMNIDOG!! Thank you for this video. I've always wanted to get the hardcover volumes and or the omnibus but seeing the colors redone, it looks really bad. I'm saving my money. Thanks again for another great video. Cheers!
sure thing Rob! Yeah the hardcovers are the same thing as the omni. Really wretched!
They should have just published it how it was! You are right!
Great and honest review. I love Neal Adam's art as well and have soft cover and a hard cover reprint of this run. But now I'm wondering if these comics are re-inkted as well by Adams. The coloring is the same as you're showing in the video, so they probably are remastered by the master himself. Why I am thinking about Star Wars all of a sudden? :)
The new coloring is horrible, are there any trades I can pick up of Neal Adam's original books collected? I've been searching forever.
Thanks for the heads-up. What utter insanity ! He created a classic that shaped the history of the medium and rescued the Twentieth century's most legendary fictional character from the hands of hacks. Then he spent ages and ages meticulously cocking it up, giving it that bland run-of-the-mill contemporary inking style that has put me off reading any modern superhero comics. I guess he didn't like the original ink-job and colours and saw this as an opportunity to put that right .. let me guess: his next project was taking an airbrush to a few Picassos, maybe giving a little depth to those annoyingly flat areas of primary colours one finds on a Mondrian
hahaha well said!
Thanks for the video. Can you recommend a book where I can find most of Adams's works featuring Batman In the original way they were made? Maybe some kind of a publication DC ahd in the past that is available on ebay etc ? I can't seem to find one. Thanks again
The only thing I can recommend is something like a trade paperback of Showcase, volume 6 on Amazon. It's black and white but you still get a real feel for how the original art is so dynamic.
Super-Team Family 1-3 reprinted Adams' two World's Finest stories "Track of the Hook" from Brave and the Bold, and Batman Family 1 reprinted Man-Bat's first appearance.
Met Neal Adams a few years ago. Got the omnibus that day, and he signed it for me. Personally signed it. Really enjoyed meeting him. But it is a shame he went back and redid the artwork. Kinda like George Lucas retooling the original Star Wars Trilogy. Nice guy though! Sarcastic.
Thanks. In depth analysis really helped.
You are right about Odyssey :-)
I totally agree. This video will help a lot of people to know what they are getting before they spend $100. on a product they might not be happy with.
Paul 124 thanks! That’s an excellent point!
The Golden Age omnis are nearly finished so i wonder if they will move on to sequential silver age omnis for Batman. If they do, then when they get to the last one and also the 1st Bronze Age omni (which is the Adams period) i wonder if they’ll leave the original art and colouring.
Based on The Spectre and Deadman omnis i think the original Adams art will be in the late Silver-early Bronze Age books. I don’t think there will be any more monkeying around with artwork!
8:30 I've seen that level of noticeable over inking in a retouched work. I will say this, completely dif topic... I love the Jim Lee re-inked X-Men TPB... not sure who did the inks, i think normally Scott Williams w Lee, but I dont keep up w inkers like I do w artists. Sometimes it works, though
Oh my god they did ruin the coloring. Thank you for the heads up.
Completely agree I was reading Neal and deni Batman run digitally and they even change changed it there and I just couldn’t get over the re coloring it completely takes away from the original and throws you out of it I couldn’t get past a couple of issues such a shame
all we can hope for is Silver and Bronze age omnibus" from DC for that period and that they're unretouched!
Adams save batman in 1970s l love adams green lantern green arrow l have the hardcover book l believe it was one best comics of the 1970s
I love your honest reviews! I decided not to buy this book due to the re-coloring. :( Hopefully DC would publish the original artworks done by Neal Adams, although the Batman Brave & the Bold Bronze Age omnibus came out which includes his works. Not quite sure how good is the run though. Have you read the Fourth World omnibus by Kirby? Cheers!
Thank you for the compliment! I have not read Kirby's stuff as it's just not my cup of tea. People who like Kirby and Fourth World stuff rave about his book though!
@@OmnidogsVault I understand your not into cubism. Kirby was something of a cubist. I also liked the Pander bros. Too few of the more sophisticated artist in the comic book feild, shame .
It's like Lucas fucking with Star Wars. Btw u should get a tripod for the close ups. Great content dude!!
eventually I'm going to learn to edit and work those close-ups in. Thank you for the compliment!
Amen! Neil never met a gradient bicep he didn't like. If you check out his 80s Continuity line, you can see the roots of this carnival colorfest disease he festered forth. I would much prefer if ALL of the older comics were scanned from well-printed (on registration) original copies. Herbie by Dark Horse is a good example. And don't get me started on going from newsprint paper to satin or glossy contemporary stock, or my pacemaker might rupture.
well said!
Extremely helpful video! The recoloring is horrendous and it’s a travesty that Adams messed with the art. Marvel seems to get it with their epic collection- coloring similar to the originals and using a cover from the original run as the cover of the collection. DC, however, seems to have awful photoshop style recoloring on its reprints. And they have baffling cover art. I bought a Green Lantern silver age collection which, thankfully had colors similar to the original- but, oddly, it had some cartoony image on the front! She m buying it because I want to see Gil Kane artwork! If I wanted to see cartoony Green Lantern I would have bought something else!
Same with the Neal Adams stuff. The marketing department is so convinced the art work “has to look modern”, but the very audience it’s intended for is turned off by it! And then, when sales are low, they probably go “oh, I guess there’s no demand for old Neal Adams Batman.”
RE: Dick Giordano was Neal Adams best inker.
Yes, absolutely! Giordano was fantastic, esp. for Adams, who could be a bit sloppy with his own inking.
Thank you for your support on this! I feel strongly that Giordano doesn't get enough credit
3 years later: you are still right on point.
thank you so much!!
Thanks for this video, was thinking of purchasing this book, but changed my mind after this
I'm so happy I saved you from this misery lol!!
Hello everyone, I just saw 2 paperbacks were released since 2018. I guess they used the new coloring, right ? I can't find out.
anything recent will have the recoloring and re inking. We're going to have to wait for Bronze age omnibus' to get the original stuff.
@@OmnidogsVault Oh you answered so fast! Thanks for that. Well i'll be patient, there is a lot to read. Keep up the good work, i really enjoy when you speak about comics. Cheers from France ;)
@@thomasa.anderson8336 Hello to France, thank you for watching!!
This review was quite an odyssey. :-) Thanks, Jess. ;-)
hahaha, thank you!
You're so right about how they loused up all the imagery for these reprints! I didn't even know that Neal Adams was personally responsible, but it sure doesn't help anything. I had volumes 2 and 3, the thinner excerpts from this same omnibus, and I returned them to the sellers because I was so unhappy about how they screwed up and totally changed how cool the art was. And I got these used off eBay I was lucky that the sellers agreed to take them back and give me refunds. I think the thing that annoys me the most with the computerized coloring is they try to put a white highlight that subtly Fades away on every single thing that light strikes. It so draws attention to itself for its total artificiality, fakeness, and crappiness. I'm so lucky I have some Neil Adams reprints from the era before anybody screwed them up and changed them in some treasuries and greatest Batman stories Ever Told, I better hang on to those. So you're so totally right on and you like root beer? You are pretty cool man
I'm hoping that sometime they'll give Jim Aparo the same "complete" treatment. I'm wondering how that would look.
that would be wonderful, I loved his work growing up. Truly talented
I agree, even Brian Bolland, though amazing, recolored The Killing Joke. Why? The original colors were awesome
Hey I was lucky enough to run into Neal Adams and his wife. I have to say both were very warm and charming to everyone around them. He kidded around and shook hands with everyone before he sat down to do signings. I can see people being upset about recolorings, there should be a disclaimer when it's done. But your average person loves shiny glossy pictures, that's what sells.
Totally agree with all said.
Yes I agree readers should have the original reprints - are they available elsewhere? I agree but Odyssey I don't agree with - I thought it was deliberately over the top on Purpose. I also agree they should have emphasized to readers not familiar with the originals the re- inking etc.
definetely like the old colors much better, that batman blue/gre/purple is just so iconic for me from back in the day. But I red somewhere it has also to do with how printing changed etc... so it might have been a necessary thing to do. :( But Neil is still BY FAR my faivorite Batman artist. Am glad I still got the originals from the 70s that i bought when I was a kid!
his original art and coloring can be found in the Deadman omnibus and the first Brave and Bold omnibus so I don't think it's a printing issue lol
@@OmnidogsVault thats great to hear! Sad than that its not used in this one...
@@pilsatortube our only hope is that DC prints the late Silver Age/Early Bronze Batman in our lifetimes lol. I'm certain those will be untouched
Man, Jess. One of the things I'm most embarrassed about is at one time defending this recoloring/reinking. You have to understand, at the time I was quite new to comics and was not yet at the point that I liked the way coloring used to be done. To me, this transformation looked more modern, so I was happy. Once I became more familiar with comic history, whether through actually reading the comics or through just gaining knowledge, I became more sour on what Adams did. By the time I finished the omnibus, I felt almost disgusted. What I realized is: you can't make an old comic into a new comic by giving it modern clothes; in fact, you're only diminishing its accomplishments. I didn't realize that at the time, and I remember defending it to you at one point before the omni was released. I certainly have long since seen the light, though. It doesn't help that it's a BAD modern coloring job, too.
Lol, don't be TOO hard on yourself Josh!! Your points are well made and exactly what I was trying to say. I hope I conveyed that in the vid. It's really breaks my heart that this book had so much tinkering done to it. I remember just how revolutionary the artwork felt when it first came out and the "improvements" on it take so much of that away.
Agreed. Neal Adams is my FAVORITE comic book artist, but I will never get the omnibus for all the changes that were done to those classic stories.
And they less said about Odyssey the better. I don't even look at the Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams anymore because of his coloring and his inking over those stories which are not just garish but outright bad. He just ins't as good as he was back in the day.
Dick Giodonao was the Perfect inker for him (although Tome Palmer is a CLOSE runner up, See their X-Men/Avengers run) Although I will say that when he did ink some of the books back in his prime they were pretty good and gave a "darker feel to his pencil than Giordono style ( Brave and Bold # 93 'ed Water/Crimson Death" is a perfect example of this.
Thank goodness i still have most of the original comics that were collected in decent condition.
At 10:30 I also noticed that half the dialog has been changed.
MY dialog?!? That's weird, I haven't messed with it at all
No I meant in the comic speech bubbles. They are completely rewritten on the omnibus compared to the pages you printed out.
@@aveyvictis oh what the heck!! I didn't even notice that!! The dialog has been rewritten too!! LOL. I don't know how I missed that. Thank you for pointing that out!!
You're welcome.
You're right man, the new version is kind of an ugly joke in comparison.
Is Batman #217 collected in this?
yes
Maybe he got paid more to re-ink? I LMAO when you talked about Odyssey...it was too crazy.
Yes, DC pays him to reink and recolor everything he produces in collected editions. That's part of his stipulation for reprinting collections of his Bronze Age work. His Silver Age work was produced WFH and he gets less of a say in how that's packaged (which is why his Spectre and early Brave and the Bold omnibus work has not been redone.)
They should at least tell you on the cover how it was reinked and recolored, but, it makes it looks like a 90s Image Comic when it's supposed to be a 70s comic. It's like when they remade Psycho scene for scene, everything felt out of place.
Man, you made me wanna buy the Showcase Presents version of these stories.
Alessandro Tinchini I did buy the Showcase presents versions of these stories! Batman is one character who looks just fine in black and white, especially when he's solo again without Robin and back to being serious and grim
You are totally right about the colors, I wasn't even close to being born when he drew this stuff but I feel it loses it's appeal of being classic with the darker more bland late 90's early 2000s coloring job. Regarding his Batman stuff post classic era I actually enjoy it. It is extremely dumb and ridiculous but I think Neal's enthusiasm makes up for the flaws of the work.
It's a crime they all seem to be doing it now, you wouldn't do it to a Van Gogh or a Rembrandt.
Also computer colouring looks awful on old school work.
Wow, thanks for your info. Good to know to stay away from the omnibus.
You could argue the same about the Watchmen recolouring. I say, as long as the original books are still out there, like the Star Wars special editions vs the originals, the fans can vvote with their feet...or in this case, their Dollars.
Digital coloring has ruined the true essence of comic book
Digital colouring isnt bad, perse. The problem is that, that omni colouring sucks! Totally ruined the art
Shifting to digital has killed my engagement in comics as well as animation. Digital inking and coloring can be good, but it takes a very skilled and passionate artist to replicate the organic qualities of real inks and paints on real paper, and even then it’s not quite as effective.
I agree, this omnibus is pretty darn terrible.
I agree 100%. The problem with Adams is he is not a writer if he was a writer he would be getting work as a writer but he doesn’t because he can’t write. Second thing is the writing on odyssey makes no sense it’s like a bad Doctor Who plot what is he thinking? His writing is comparable to 1950s Batman books on a good day. Now when it comes to the art he’s pissing on his own legacy by redrawing and bad colouring and monkey facing some of his art, it is embarrassing on his whole history and career. But fans seem to flock and pay for his current portfolio, shame.
I wish what you were saying wasn't true but it is...
There's also a batman by neal Adams trade paperback. Are those re colored?
Did they use markers or color pencil ???
I also hated this omnibus. I didn't mind the recoloring so much...but "Odyssey" was so godawful that I sold this omnibus as soon as I could and opted for the 3 hardcover volumes instead.
I hate when they recolor classics. Like Brian Bolland's recoloration of The Killing Joke. The original color palette by John Higgins is what made the book so special in my opinion. The purples, the greens... really put you inside Joker's universe
what do you think about the recoloring of Moore's Swamp Thing?
@@OmnidogsVault I've never seen it. Is it good?
@@etrx87 haha NO!! It's AWFUL!!!!
@@OmnidogsVault Is the recoloring only the Absolute Editions or also the trades / the new slipcase that just came out
@@etrx87 to my knowledge it's only the absolutes. The original coloring is very foreboding and atmospheric and sets the stage of spooky swamp. The new coloring is bright and clean and while I can't knock someone that prefers it, it takes the sweaty atmosphere away from the OG.
I am with you on this. Was the original colouring perfect? Nope. Do I still want to see it. Yes! I want to see a slice of history - not modified history. I recently saw the new colouring for Alan Moore's Swamp thing and was upset by the changes. And so many times the changes and updates don't objectively "improve" it, they make worse choices than the original colorist.
Well said!!
The last Neal Adams stuff is very peculiar! I must say I like it. Its wild almost surrealist. Like silver age comics on crack. Adams was a strange guy and DC just let him do whatever in a small handful of books. Fascinating!
this was a good response lol! Thanks!
My favorite of Adams is green lantern green arrow of the 1970s
My favorite Neal Adam's too let's not forget that it look that good is because Dick Giordano fixed it up.
Let's also not forget that other than Green Arrow ,most of Adam's stuff is full of Gil Kane swipes.
Tragic. It's more than his art. It's a part of comic book history.
You got it all right. Root beer is cool. The original Neal Adams artwork was cool. This recolored crap is stupid
This isn't just "re-inked". It's *_re-drawn._* I might have bought this based on what it was _supposed_ to be, but what it _is?_ Forget it. And modern superhero comics color is horrifyingly overdone. $50 of mine that will go to better use.
Sir I totally agree
What are the best trades that collects the ORIGINAL Neal Adam's Batman art, and not the updated crap we've been getting???
John that’s a great question. I’ve only been able to find the original stuff in the Brave and Bold omni 1. Otherwise I think we have to wait for late period SA omnis. Also a few stories in Tales of the Demon are untouched
@@OmnidogsVault thank you for the reply. It's very much appreciated
No, not another case of someone trying to “improve” things from the past! OMG. I get where you are coming from! You want it to look like it did originally.
I sure do!!
Recoloring can be helpful on occasion but to me, from what I've seen, it just taints the artist's legacy. And takes away the impact that it had at the time their respective stories were published. You saved me from spending my money on this. For that you've got a new subscriber.
Nice! I'm glad I saved you some money!!
Yes I prefer the way they originally looked, it looked a lot better and more detailed.
The originals should always remain in print. If Neal wanted to enhance them (to make the art not look 'dated') DC could have instead offered a 'remastered' version to go along with the originals. I would definitely have bought both versions.
well that's a good idea that no one at DC thought of. As it is we're going to have to wait a while until the 1968-1973 DC Adams stuff finally gets reprinted in omnis. At the rate DC is going, I hope I live to see it lol
People talk about how Frank Miller went off the deep end after Sin City, but Neal Adams is certifiably insane in terms of writing, and always has been. BM: Odyssey and his recent Deadman mini are like the fever dreams of a deranged schizo. His writing in the 60s and 70s was tightly edited (that is, rewritten to be intelligible), but he has so much clout now that he gets unfettered creative control.
that's a really good point about the editing in the past!
I am the biggest Neal Adams. I clicked on this video thinking.. "who in the world could hate Neal Adams?? you are dead right about everything. Those pages were terrible, I never understood how much Giordano added to the final result. Great video. Omnibus is awful and tacky looking. Overthing overcooked/saturated. Huge error by Adams.
I hate modern digital colouring in comic books, it makes everything look so shiny, bright and flat.
This reminds me so much of George Lucas tampering with Star Wars.
Neal Adams is one of the finest comicbook artists of all time, maybe even number 1. This hurts. I agree with you on almost everything. Except this: Giordano is a great inker, but Neal is better, especially inking his own stuff.
HunterZolomon we can respectfully disagree!! But yes it does hurt, his art changed my life as a teenager
@@OmnidogsVault I appreciate that. Green Lantern / Green Arrow did it for me. Still magic.
@@HunterZolomon SAME
Is it the reinking or the recoloring that bothers you most?
Personally I like it, but -- it seems like he could have done it better.. it's like he was trying to keep it looking like the original.. would have been interesting if he just reinked/recolored as if it was done today. Altho, I don't personally own this book as it's now going for kooky prices
How do you feel about Walt Simonsons Thor? That was recolored. You seem to not be a "purist", not knocking the recoloring just because it was altered.. so curious
The limited color pallete of the old silver/bronze age stuff gets on my nerves after awhile, it seems like yellows and blues are overused.. I'm all for recoloring (when it's done well)
I hate that it was altered at all. His work was powerful enough to stand on it's own.
while I agree that Batman: Odyssey is a bit 'busy' with too much detail. I respectfully disagree with what you say of his redo in the Omnibus. I'm not as jarred as you seem to be with the recoloring. And, yes while it isn't 'necessary' to redo the colors I dig the work Mr Adams did. And by golly, at least he still has passion for the character.
fair enough!
