I love the whole story of the 808. It's original purpose was to replicate a drum kit, but it sounds _nothing_ like a drum kit. However, for that precise reason, it inspires a whole generation to experiment and it becomes famous in its own right. What's not to love?

    • @paulricco9545

Sort of not true. The 808 was not made to replicate a drum kit, but rather to be a cheaper option to the Linn Lm1 drum machine...but it was still over a $1000 usd. Reviews of course slammed it as Musicians and producers WANTED a drum machine to replicate a real drummer . The TB 303 is the same story.
Of course electronic music was not so popular around its release date, and the rest is history.

You can hear the TR-808 prominently throughout the soundtrack for the first _Animal Crossing_ of all places; then again, that same soundtrack also has at least two homages to "Simoon" by Yellow Magic Orchestra, the very first band to adopt the 808 in the first place (their 1981 album _BGM_ in fact was the first to use it, and it's a *very* prominent feature of the music within).

Absolute love it! the drums bring a bit of a hip-hop vibe to it (when listening with modern ears) which makes it absolutely unique. Goth/post-punk guitars with drum machines is a great vibe in general, another favourite of mine is Alice by Sisters of Mercy, it's a 606 though I think

one of the most iconic drum machines of all time. Though I never liked it, it is still unique and is such a wonderful instrument, which has been used on so many iconic songs.

It's nice, when you've only used more powerful and complex formats (like Battery, or Simpler), to see what essential components went into making the sounds from this classic machine.
The articulation mechanism is especially intriguing...

I find it ironic that the more realistic sound Linn LM-1 (preferred over the 808 at the time) has become the drum machine seen as dated and passé. Literally every hip hop record these days has 808s all over it
