  • Wreckage from the USS Hornet was discovered in late January 2019 by the expedition crew of Paul G. Allen’s Research Vessel (R/V) Petrel. The Hornet was found 5,400 meters (nearly 17,500 feet) below the surface, resting on the floor of the South Pacific Ocean around the Solomon Islands.

I love how there's a perfectly preserved tractor onboard a carrier that sank 80 years ago

My wife's Uncle, SId Krieger was a chief radio operator aboard the Hornet when it was sunk. He was among those left aboard when the last Japanese air attack came in. As the planes approached he was lining up to go over the side. He went to a nearby machine gun and fired at the enemy. He is quoted as having said "Come on boys, 3 shots for a quarter", as if he were back in a Coney Island Arcade. He was picked up out of the water later by a destroyer.

Hornet, Yorktown, and Enterprise. The three sisters of the Yorktown class. Yorkie was sunk at Midway, her sisters survived that one. Hornet was sunk at Santa Cruz which Enterprise survived. It pains me that Enterprise was scrapped rather than turned into a museum ship.

Does anyone know if the Petrel team release documentaries on their discoveries? I'm highly fascinated by Paul Allen's work with regards to WW2 ship discoveries.

Its amazing how the marine ecosystem in the bottom of the worlds oceans is so different, in some places wrecks are completely covered by all sorts of marine life and corrosion to the extent where it makes the wrecks almost unrecognizable and in some places like here the wrecks look almost pristine, just like the day they sunk 75 years ago

It’s very deep,at 5500m of water it’s in the abyssal zone that has no sunlight and no oxygen.Wrecks below 1000m deteriorate a lot slower than those shallow wrecks.

@@user-jy8en3xs8i True, the best preserved shipwrecks are in environmental conditions that are either very deep, very cold, or have low oxygen levels (sometimes all three). That's why there are so many wrecks (wood ,iron , and steel) that survive in regions such as the Black Sea , Baltic sea, and in the Great lakes.

At that depth the water surrounding the ship has a low oxygen level thus will slow down the decay of the ship ( not much rust). That wreck is at around 17,500 feet deep which would cause issues for salvage. regardless humanity often has a way with destroying things, so its best she stays were she lies.

I would like to know. What was happening at 55 into the video. The door is partially synched. The ladder is bent. So maybe a near explosion deformed the bulkhead and the coats were being used to stop water???? It just seems messy. Any other ideas
