The truly most patriotic thing I've ever witnessed is something that very few people in this country witnessed, but I know that the same scenes were played out across this land in their own ways.
    Friday, September 14, 2001.
Small town America. Football season. Homecoming Week. Every day of this week is a celebration. My son had just started Pee-Wee Football (8 yr olds) and had been SOO excited for it to get here. Friday night is the Big Game, but first we have a big parade with floats, firetrucks, etc (Think mini-4th of July).
But, dear God, no one wanted to celebrate a DAMN thing after that Tuesday morning. All the activities had been canceled besides the game. But, our Senior class came to the school administration and asked to not cancel the parade. They wanted to say something. It was given the go ahead.
Friday came. The town soberly gathered and lined the parade route. We didn't really know what to expect.
Every parade starts with the sounds of sirens, police cars leading the way for the Flag. We were about midway along the route, my kids were starting to get restless and impatient waiting to hear the sirens. I was talking with my friend and a neighbor when I distinctly remember hearing something and my friend sucking in a hard breath and my neighbor whispered "Dear God".
Turning my head, I saw rows and rows of American Flags marching down main street in complete silence. Our entire Senior Class, about 150, were in rows of 10 across, each carrying an American Flag. In silence.
The only sound made by ANYONE was the sounds of the feet of the flag bearers and those flags waving in the wind. Tears were silently streaming down every face I could see. Even the restless young ones became still.
I'm sure that it hit and meant many different things and felt different ways by different people, but I was an emotional wreck. It took me awhile to even be able to articulate those feelings. Even today, just thinking about that makes me ugly cry. That memory is one that I cherish right up there with my wedding and the birth of my children. It will be with me and bring me to tears until the day I die.

What Keri did was nothing short of amazing. High difficulty vault, getting a near perfect score on everything despite having a broken ankle...it was AMAZING! For reference, 6.4 is the highest difficulty rating you can start a vault with.

I lived next to Mr.Ali for years. He had a very large complex and the grounds were stunning. While in his younger years he would run this trail through a vast tree lined area surrounded by guards (this kept the guards in top shape also). His home sat on the river in Berrien Springs, Michigan and we lived just across the river from him. It was close enough that you could talk to him, he had a beautiful gazebo that sat close to the water and he would sit in it sipping cold drinks and feed the ducks in the water. He was as always very kind and polite he would always wave. It was during one of these runs that he came to the river and I do not know what made me do it but I raised my fist acting like I was punching in a boxing match he smiled shook his head at me then he punched the air lighting fast and rose both hands to the sky while dancing just like he had won a boxing match. I was so thrilled that he played along. Later in the years as the Parkinson's had progressed he no longer ran he would walk and you could see that he could no longer control his movements. It was so very sad and then you no longer saw him out at all. He is and always will be the Greatist.

The Miricle on Ice game was extra special for those of us who had neighbors on the team. Jack O'Callahan was that guy for us in the Charlestown section of Boston.
Jack came home with his medal, and drove around looking to interact with his friends and neighbors. But no one was out on the streets when he returned. He climber over Bunker Hill St, still void of people, and decided to go home to his parents house. As he turned the corner from Bunker Hill to Concord Street, he learned why no one was on the streets. There, in front of his parents' house, was all 20,000 of us Townies, waiting for our hero.

Although I had credentials to get in there usually, the Belmont Stakes was a different story! However, Angel Cordero became a friend to me, and I don’t know how much money he slipped someone, but that combined with his status, got me in.
This wasn’t simply the greatest race horse of all time. He KNEW he was the greatest, and even just getting maybe 30 feet close to him, he radiated a calm dignity that I just can’t explain.

Ironically, the deciding vote for Mary Lou Retton's gold medal came from the head judge, Ludmilla Tourischeva of Russia (one of the world's greatest of the traditional female gymnasts) who was celebrated for her grace, elegance, impeccable form, and strong technique. Hitler became so convinced that Jesse Owens must have been on drugs in order to have beaten representatives of his "master race" that he insisted on pharmaceutical research that resulted in the Nazi blitzkrieg being fueled by methamphetamine issued in daily rations to military personnel (he himself was also an addict).

On April 15, 2013, during the annual Boston Marathon, two immigrant brothers from Chechnya placed two IEDs near the marathon's finish line. Those devices detonated at around 2:49 p.m. killing 3 people and injured an additional 281. Many of those surviving victims required amputations of parts of or entire limbs. A manhunt to find the two dudes was initiated and ultimately concluded with the arrest of one brother and the death of the other. On April 17, 2013, the (National Hockey League) Boston Bruins played the Buffalo Sabres at the TD Garden arena in Boston, the first professional sporting event in Boston following that incident. Rene Rancourt sang the Star-Spangled Banner that night, as he did every game night. However, this time he sang the first 13 seconds of the anthem and then he let the crowd take over. It was awesome to see everyone in the arena singing our national anthem in unison followed by chants of USA USA USA. You should check it out. Search CZcams for U.S. National Anthem at TD Garden in Boston 4/17/13.

The gymnastics thing, it’s a hard thing to ever get right. My parents encouraged my older brother into many things and it never went well but he’s a sociopath, it was never going to go well they just didn’t know. I knew as I became his target when prying eyes weren’t there. But he can be charming and convincing. Because of him they didn’t push me to do anything and I really hate that. I was never signed up for Girl Scouts or cheerleading or anything that most kids don’t even know exists until they’re in it. All my friends had these bonds I never would cause they just didn’t bother to try. Sounds like you went the right route

@@lianabaddley8217 While I agree with the sentiment of your comment, you are factually wrong. When two US Navy vessels pass entering or leaving port the national ensign on the vessel having the junior commanding officer is dipped as a sign of respect to the senior commanding officer of the passing US Navy vessel. Likewise in open water, US Navy regulations article 1263 directs that "when any vessel, under United States registry or the registry of a nation formally recognized by the Government of the United States, salutes a ship of the Navy by dipping her ensign, it shall be answered dip for dip". The Olympic Games is another example of when the US flag dips to the flag of another country.

It's better for your daughter to quit gymnastics. It is super hard on your joints. Those landings compress ankles & knees at superfast speeds for super hard impacts. Same for wrists. I have friends that have ruined their bodies. When the adulations are over, you are half crippled. ~ And you must watch the movie 'Miracle on ice'. It is 'our hockey story' & it's awesome. One of the players was from our town & I and the rest of the country were bursting with pride in our boys. I know you love sports, so you would love the movie. I know I did & I am an old woman who has never been a fan. Bring tissues.

Everyone now understands that having a flag ceremony for 9/11 at the Olympics was entirely inappropriate. The Olympics are exclusively a non-political event. The Olympics are about competition and unity. Should Syrians be allowed to have a ceremony because the Israelis attack them on a regular basis? Should Yemenis be allowed to have a ceremony because they're under attack from Saudi Arabia. Should Iraqis be given a moment because they were slaughtered by Americans. The answer to all is NO. None of this belongs in the Olympics. Do people *really* not understand this? Olympics are sport, not politics.
