  • If you're looking for a new job, or a career change, automotive technology can be rewarding. In this edition of Car Coach, YNN's Lauren Fix has more on the industry.
Parents and students should take a second look at automotive repair. It is a high-tech career that is always in demand, and can't be outsourced overseas.
Parents, if becoming an automotive technician is not high on your list of career choices for your child, perhaps it's time to look again. You may consider the automotive industry for yourself as well.
Officials with the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, the independent group that tests and certifies the competence of auto technicians nationally, notes automotive service and repair has changed dramatically in just the span of a generation.
High-tech systems are now standard equipment on much of the nation's vehicles, including stability and traction control systems, and adaptive cruise control, just to name a few. And more changes are on the way. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric vehicles, plus Internet connections, voice recognition commands and GPS mapping are some of the new technologies available in economy to luxury models.
Given the advance of technology and a richly varied automotive industry that offers an array of positions and career paths, the future is bright for talented people with math, science, communications and technical skills. Unlike many high-tech careers that require four, six, or even eight years of college, automotive technology careers can begin after just two years of education.
As with any career, lifelong learning and continuing education is necessary, but the simple fact is, students in automotive technology can get out into the real world sooner, and with less college debt.
Moreover, job growth looks strong into the foreseeable future. The U.S. Dept. of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that the automotive repair and maintenance industry is expected to add 237,500 new jobs and have a 30 percent growth rate through 2020. That makes technicians one of the top 20 jobs with relatively high median earnings, and the potential for significant job openings over the next decade.
The jobs run the gamut from line technician to service consultant, service director, or store owner. There is work in parts, parts distribution and wholesaling; collision repair, painting, and damage estimating; vehicle maintenance, repair, and performance upgrades.
There is work in technical areas, training, or in management at the corporate level for national franchises, vehicle manufacturers, and private and municipal fleets.
For those whose true calling is in the service bay, it's far from a dead-end career. Top-notch technicians well versed in computer diagnostics and the latest engine performance and drivability solutions can and do command top-dollar salaries.
If your child prefers to get out into the real world and make his or her mark, consider a career in automotive technology. More than 360,000 professionals hold current ASE certification.

Lauren, As a well seasoned tech/ owner in business 33 years I can totally agree! This is a great hi tech field that cannot be sourced out over seas. I have found it very rewarding mentally and physically. I have a very talented young women tech, please try to encourage women to join this field as they have very much to offer. GREAT VIDEO

this is the best and worst field to get into not alot of money in it, and when you first start out you don't know nothing but book stuff, and don't make over 12$ an hour, which could only pay your phone bill and one other bill and a small amount of your student loan, your student loan will be more than you make annually so it's gunna be a bit of a struggle while you're making payments... you may get fired a few times because of your lack of experience, it will be best to get into a dealership, but most dealers only care about sales department and don't spend money on their employees to go to school and become better techs, express service techs is where you start at dealerships so make sure you tighten drain plugs and oil filters ... auto tech is good to know because you could do it on the side and make customers of your own, but as a career it sucks just look at the A tech or higher than you tech and look at the amount of work they put in to these cars and jobs then ask yourself is that what you want as a career for you .... I like working on cars they are amazing to fix and understand, but it's not a good career choice.... also this is a good and a bad thing, your friends and some family will no longer be friends and family but will become your customers, you'll think they're calling to see how you're doing but they're not because it always leads to them asking questions about their car or can you fix their car, it gets annoying .... good luck

sir you are misguided. You get what you work for out of this career. If you are making 12 an hour, work your ass off and learn as much as you can then move up. You shouldn't be getting fired multiple times because of "lack of experience" because when you start a job you should tell them you have minimum experience. There is plenty of money to be made if you move up the ranks and stick with it. A lot of these younger techs just stay as lube guys because they have no drive and are not resourceful and money hungry enough to want to move up. You said it sucks because the A techs put in a lot of work.. whats wrong with working hard? This industry will chew you up and spit you out if you don't really want it. I don't know where your info is from about dealers but you will never get training at any other shop that is better than a dealer. Dealers invest tons of money to send their techs to multiple training throughout the years. Also your friends and family will no longer be friends and family because you work on cars? a little dramatic. This career is not for everyone but if you want it bad enough you can easily make a living and move up the ranks. Unless you have dedicated years and are full blown tech doing big boy jobs and making big boy money you barely know the industry. Judging by your statement, you never really had enough time in it to really understand the industry.

My dad became a technician at a Honda dealership. He's been doing it for almost 20 years. At some point in his career, he was making around $100,000 annually for 4 straight years! That's not bad to be honest. The only toll was my dad realized that he couldn't keep bending his back and fixing cars as he aged (he's no 38 years old). He would often come home very tired. So he changed careers and instead of fixing cars, he chose to learn how to sell cars at a Mazda dealership. Thus ensuring a job even when he's "at that age" if anything happens. So the thing about being a technician at Honda is that you don't get paid hourly. You get paid off of how much jobs you do, so you could be sitting at the garage doing nothing and the end result is, , nothing...no money. It's kind of weird because as a technician, you're not promoting yourself neither are you outside of the shop during work so on some bad days you could have no one coming=no money. But note however different dealerships pay differently. At a Mercedez dealership those lucky motherfuckers get paid hourly and commission when being a salesmen while at Mazda it's just commission. it really. i really like cars and i plan on studying in the automotive industry , maybe as a techinician for a lil bit , but study even more to be an

Education is the key. Weber State University in Ogden Utah offers a B.S. in Automotive Technology. This degree with your work experience and ASE certifications will take you to the next level. Car Corporations are paying large salaries to people with a this B.S. degree in our field and with your mechanic knowledge you are highly valued inside the industry. A 4 year degree is a small price to pay to take you out of the shop and onto a career that you love.
