I have one and at first it was all about trying to clean my room and get rid of old schoolwork. As a kid I wasn't allowed to throw away anything I got from school so I had quite a hoard to go through. I would usually write down around 1 sentence for every page I got rid of. The way I reviewed the old work was by skimming through all of it and committing to eliminating a single page. Although I would often end up eliminating 10% of the material on the first review. This was due to me targeting whatever I thought was the least valuable and getting comfortable with the idea of, and the methods for, transcribing larger and larger bits of text. I do things very differently now but for anyone with extra paper in their house it's not a bad idea to simply write a note on whatever was important about the page and potentially take a picture of the page so you can let it go.

I have been creating a variety of notebooks for myself for a long time. At first I only had two, a quotes collection and a place to jot story ideas. I’ve kept both for a few decades now, weird as it seems to be that old. When I learned about bullet journals and their indexing and page numbering, I started organizing other notes. Crafting, book notes, recipes, fitness, writing, etc. each have their own notebooks now. I have so much of each that it just made sense to separate them out. For general random notes that I know I will need to refer to again, I keep a series of cheap spiral notebooks right at hand by the computer. Any thing can go in those pages. When I fill one I review it to make sure the index is complete and I mark various categories of notes with different washi tapes. That helps me find stuff I will likely want for reference over and over. (How-to instructions, notes from a talk, etc. ) I find that the act of writing notes helps me retain the information too. And oh, yeah, I keep a bullet journal too, lol!!

I think a binder notebook is a really great recommend for turning into a commonplace book! For many years I have been collecting a lot of knowledge or facts and I can't remember all of it, after write that down in commonplace book I have to classify it into the right index, not to mention I'm a not so organized person it would drive me crazy. So I like to when I suddenly remember something I can randomly write that information down and slowly classify it out later without worrying about everything getting mixed up. Plus I almost have endless page to keep continue writing without fear the limit of the pages. I also don't like having too many commonplace books, just one is more than enough.
Thank you Jet Pens recently I keep thinking what's the best way to actually using my fountain pens cuz journal make me feel so cringe. I had the similar idea but didn't know that is called commonplace book. I learned a new word, you guys are the best!

@@niradnam13e well the good thing about a binder is: you should be able to take the pages out and plop them down on your desk. Yes, I have done a common place book, My grand mother had several. She enjoyed sharing things in it with us. Alas she died in 1977.

TIL what a commonplace book was and that I've kept several in legal pads and Mead notebooks over the years without even realizing it! And just by sheer coincidence, I have a Midori notebook that I tried and failed to keep as a journal. I think I may have to turn it into my new "commonplace book".

For me a Traveler’s notebook is perfect. It’s hard to get too precious about individual refills so you don’t have to worry too much about “I’m going to ruin this beautiful object” anxiety, you can have a bunch of different types of refills, and you can set each of them up to put different things in. It’s super customizable. Mine has my calendar, a refill for notes on things I’m learning, brainstorming about, or just need to write down somewhere, one for other, “secret” (as far as a random CZcams comment is concerned) things, and a journal. I have a little zipper pouch with a writing board and clear stamps in it and the other side has double sided stickers for Instax pics I take. I carry it in my bag with me everywhere and it serves me super well.

I feel persuaded to try a commonplace book. There are plenty of descriptions of how commonplace books have been used by well known scholars such as Newton. My sister enjoys writing and so do others in my family. I may be convinced. I would like to compliment Connie for presenting so well in this video. I have to say the videograpnhy is of outstanding quality too.

I keep a traveler's notebook already... I wonder if swapping out the sketchbook section I don't use with something a bit more commonplace-ish would do the trick.

I have a binder with papers collected. I used to use regular notebook to write things inspired by or things I saw if when I traveled. If I ate something good. Heard a great saying. Promises made to me or from me. People borrowed money from me. Habits, Hello Kitty stickers, really random things. Never thought to call it anything but my rambling . It literally had no real organization but I got out of habit thought about it I probably pick up things again a small thing to jot things down.

I’ve blown through three or four commonplace books at this point, though I’ve never called them commonplace books. I’ve just been calling them my “Lists and Things”. I don’t bother organising them since they’re so cluttered and eclectic that organisation becomes a hassle (for a taste how cluttered they are: some pages are for story ideas, the next for interesting animal facts, the others have school related projects in them, some have sketches, so on, so forth). The most I do is write the date and time of me writing whatever the entry was. However, I do organise my books. My first one was simply called “Lists and Things”. The second, “Lists and Things 2”. My supplies are usually my favourite mechanical pencil (a crusty, 9 year old Pilot mech pencil falling apart as we speak - I use this pencil for everything lol) or a nice but simple gel pen like the Zebra Sarasa.
I’m not too precious with them compared to my sketchbooks, journals, or more recently, a comics drafting book. For me, they just have lists and things. Currently in “Fancy Lists and Things XL”. “Fancy” denotes that it’s slightly pricier than my usual ones (usually they’re old school notebooks since I like the line spacing for them, this one is a book I got from the shop but I hate the line spacing) and “XL” indicates size (in this case, A4 - I normally use A5). No number since it’s the first XL book I have.

I love all of these ideas, but I can't stand having many different books for different things, so I try to put my daily therapy journal, the commonplace, even my bullet journal in one place, like a cross section of my brain at that time, but... that has complexities of its own. My friends all wonder why I have a commonplace at all when I have Google, but Google is TOO much--my book is the distilled "what I care about" that goes with my life.
