    Thank you, thank you! I’m and old-ish woman musician - piano, guitar and flute. I have always ALWAYS wanted to be a percussionist and I’ve just never had a chance to learn (ie no teacher.) I’ve lost my entire family so I now live alone and am free to do what I want and I am learning something crazy fun from your videos! I’ll never be pro, but because of you, I can entertain myself and I even get to join in on some gigs with friends. Rhythm is everything and starting with egg shakers to larger cylindrical shakers and now tambourine, I am rocking my house every day. I keep an egg everywhere I go and even play in the car! So thankful for your instructions - so simple, even *I* can get it. I think it’s also really good to tone the saggy bits on my arms! This is my new meditation tool. You’re the best.

    Two other things I like to do: "pinch" the tambourine in the playing hand and rattle it quickly back and forth, for a shimmy sound; also, play the individual jingles using a thumb stroke for a filler sound. Good solid techniques you practice, and you always have great videos.

    I was a tamborine player in the Salvation Army for ten years. What he is teaching is incredibly simplistic and not in the least bit advanced compared to what we used to do. We used to thumb roll it, twirl it on our fingers using the thumb hole (which these don't have) and wave them all over the place. It was a bit like aerobics with a timbril (posh name for tamborine).

    I added this syncopatic technique to my teaching on the shaker. One can generate polyrhythms just by mechanically (brainless) combing little algorithms to varying pattern-structures, letting them train your rhythm feeling and expand it to complexity, instead of having to grasp the idea of the addition-pattern in advance.

    Kalani, I am interested in a video on playing the tambourine in a dance setting, where you use other parts of your body, like striking the tambourine on the hip, etc. Do you have specific techniques for other body parts? Thanks!

    • @WORLDDRUMCLUB
      @WORLDDRUMCLUB  Před rokem +3

      As a percussionist and performer / recording artist, I was not personally exposed to, nor did I require, any “body” techniques, but I don’t see why you couldn’t adapt some of these to other parts. I think the playing on one’s hip, is more of a singer thing, possibly born out of the TV era and doing live shows.

    I didn’t know I was playing the tambourine incorrectly. What is your tough on the hand clap method where the player raise to tambourine in the air and strike it like the person was basically hand clapping.

    • @JensGulin
      @JensGulin Před 3 lety +3

      I wouldn't call it "incorrect". He just showed some of the basic techniques to start with and didn't say anything else was wrong.
      My thought is that your style is very visual, assuming you do this over your head. The challenge is to do it tightly in beat, which is not necessarily a priority. Smaller movements help you keep more in control and save energy. If you move the tambourine down to waist level you're close to what he showed first. Moving only the striking hand saves energy and gives you more control of the rattle. Other than that, there's nothing to say you can't enjoy your variant. Keep musical!
