Thanx for the video, nice comparison.
Installed my gen2 burrs yesterday, it is a huge upgrade from the 1.1 burrs.
I’m glad I settled for the gen2 instead of spending more on ssp burrs.
Thank for watching and commenting! You can't go wrong with the Gen 2, and if you're getting the cups of coffee you're happy with then why spend anymore of your hard earned money for only a small increase!
Thanks for doing this review. I was really curious how the Gen 2 would compare to the SSP and now I know! Which grind settings did you use for each? Also, I noticed in your comments at the end that you think the SSP would be better for espresso. Do the SSPs if installed in the Ode grind fine enough for espresso?
I would not use the Ode to grind for espresso. It is not recommended to use the Ode to grind that fine because the motor in the Ode is not designed for that and isn’t strong enough to handle extra resistance finer grinding creates, especially if you use lighter roasts. As far as grind settings I’m usually in the 4-6 range but it depends on the coffee, the brewer, the brew method etc.
Great video. I just purchased a 1zpresso Jx. But I'm curious about the difference between conical and flat burrs. Maybe I'll save up for an Ode Gen 2. Thanks for the tip about Presta Coffee. Great hiking weather in Tucson right now. I'll drive down from PHX, hike, and pick up some coffee.
Yea definitely check out Presta!!! We like to hike Sabina Canyon when we go, weather permitting 😝
Love my cast burrs. Haven’t tried the Gen 2 burrs yet
Hi there,
Great video ! Just came across this channel recently and I’ve enjoyed your burr comparison videos. Needless to say , you’ve got a new subscriber :)
Question for you : have you compared the Gen2 burrs against the SSP MP? Are you planning to release a video on this soon ? It would be SOOO helpful. I know that many people such as myself are trying to figure that out since the MP are probably the most popular of the SSP burrs when it comes to filter coffee. Or the ODE in general since, it’s designed for filter anyway.
I’m planning to get the ODE and am torn between the SSP MP Or the GEN2 burrs. From the looks of it and based on Nick’s comments across various online platforms, it appears that the MP is still the winner in terms of absolute clarity. But I’m curious to know how much a difference there is in clarity and how the GEN 2 compares in body, sweetness, etc.
Would love you to hear your thoughts:)
Cheers !
Thank you!!!! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the videos and thanks for your support! I am planning to release a few more videos having to do with all these popular Ode burrs. That being said we are filming the Gen 2 VS SSP MP video tomorrow and will hopefully have it edited and ready to post soon. I’m in the process of finishing up several videos and working on some client videos at the same time so I’m a little back logged but I’m working through it!!! Thanks for your patience 😊
@@coffeenerdaaron Anytime! Happy to support and follow along your journey :)
Oh man the timing is amazing. Really Looking forward to it 😊 For now though, can you comment on what your personal preference is between those two burrs or is that something I’ll have to wait for ahah ?
Thank you for your reply and looking forward to all the new and exciting content !
Yo Aaron, great informative video. Nice to see you here. Can’t remember when was the last time in see you inGilbert.I have been in coffee industry for few years now. I roast for well known company. Lets talk.
Great video! I'd love to see a comparison between Cast and MPs to hear your thoughts.
Hey there Mr Coffee Man! I finished installing my gen 2 burrs on my ode v1. Thanks to your tutorial video. This video actually gave me an idea for a ? for you. So, I drink iced coffee 95% of the time. No matter what time of year. I mean real iced coffee not cold brew. Though i like that too. And your little experiment at the end there got my brain wondering, is there perhaps a better burr set that might be geared towards a different temperature of coffee? Or a certain geometry of burr that would be better for iced coffee? I ask because I think your experiment may have saved me a lot of money. I was ready to shell out the money for the cast burrs but thought I'd try the gen 2 set first since they're a lot cheaper. And since my ode model is one of the first made, most, if not all, ssp burrs won't fit mine. But I'm curious now about this and if maybe I have been coffee gear hunting all wrong. Because I usually like my coffee cold not hot. But anyway, would you happen to know anymore information on burrs better suited for colder coffee? I've tried researching but I can't find much. Keep on brewing my friend!
Also, I might be on to something because I just realized I got a catcloud shipment of beans along with my burrs I ordered. I made some iced and hot coffee with the beans earlier and the iced coffee definitely tasted a lot better. Like you could separate the tastes more and I'd say it tasted more balanced rather than when I tasted it hot. Hmm...
I don’t know about burrs specifically for iced coffee brewing… but most coffees usually open up and show their flavor not separation more as they cool. And of course this is more noticeable with better burrs. If you do flash brewing where you brew directly over ice the coffee cools very quickly and you retain more of the volatile compounds that usually escape through aromatic release. So that helps too with retaining more flavors in the cup that might otherwise demolish in a hot cup.
Hey man, love your video's man! Now hear me out, since the fellow gen 2 are 64mm burrs. How would work if they were installed in the df64? Is that a good idea?
Thanks man, I appreciate you watching! So..... I actually had this same thought the other day and I happened to be on IG talking to Nick, the designer of the Ode and the Gen 2 burrs, and I mentioned this thought to him. My thought, which is probably the same thought you had, was that because the Ode motor is not designed for espresso grinding, and the Gen 2 burrs seem like they can go fine enough for espresso, it wouldn't be smart to grind that fine with them and put strain on the Ode motor? However he stated that since these burrs are designed for the Ode specifically and you can set them up just off touch at setting 1 and grind at that setting in the Ode, installing them into any other 64mm grinder doesn't gain you anything in terms of being able to grind any finer. At touch the Gen 2 burrs can only grind fine enough to pull about a 7-8 bar shot. You can pull turbo shots with them which I have done using a Flair 58 and it was pretty tasty! Hope that makes sense? And how funny we had the same thought! 🤣
@@coffeenerdaaron I absolutely love the fact we had the same idea! Part of me was thinking if the ode burr taste better and cheaper then go for those instead of the ode. But since gen 2 are made specific for the ode then that limit its cross compatibility. Man your doing an awesome job! Can't wait to see what else you upload next!
Where did you get the bellows?
Thanks for the REAL review, as I'm saying in all channels, who received something from the seller to review cannot be reliable! and you did a TRUE review! thanks for sharing it!
I’m interested to know your thoughts when comparing with the Gorilla Gear burrs. At this point I’m deciding between them or the Gen 2’s from Fellow.
DOPE.
I haven’t tried cast 💸 but I got those Gen2 coming from v1.1 burrs.
I just ordered the gen2 burrs. I'd love the new Ode Grinder, but I can't justify the price when the gen2 burrs are only $80. Thanks for the review. Wasn't sure if the gen2 burrs were worth it.
Completely agree! If you already have a Gen 1 grinder and just want the Gen 2 burrs then that’s the way to go. The other upgrades are cool but won’t produce a better cup of coffee, just better workflow.
I have also found that the Gen 2 burrs have more muted acidity when hot with noticeably brighter acidity as the coffee cools, which makes no sense to me. But that’s been pretty consistently my experience over a couple months now
I actually kind of enjoy that aspect of these burrs! In my opinion it’s kind of nice that the brightness and/or acidity increases, or stay the same relative to the other flavors as the cup cools. I find that with most burrs brightness fades away relatively quickly as the cup cools. Again it’s one of those preference things! 😊
@@coffeenerdaaron I agree, definitely a preference thing. Not really my preference, but also undeniably great for the price point
Have you tried the red speed coated burrs?
I have tried the SSP MP Red Speed but not any of the other SSP’s with the Red Speed coating. I will have a comparison video with those coming soon. I’ve already done a video with them if you look at my older vids 😊
I'm plan on getting the ssp multipurpose burrs for my df64, do think there is similar burrs to them
The MP's are very nice, especially if you are seeking tons of clarity. I'm planning on putting my Gorilla Gear burrs in my DF64 soon to mess around, I'll probably do a video!
@@coffeenerdaaron a thing that's been bugging me is how do I get the grind size correct on my df64, I did align the burrs but grind size is and hard thing to notice so if you have any tips about it
@@noorquttieneh grind size is really a trial and error type thing. Pick a setting you think might be close and adjust from there. If you brew time is too long and bitter tasting it is over extracted and you’ll need to go courser on the grind. If it’s too fast and sour it’s under extracted and you’ll need to go finer. This is a general rule but there are other factors that can affect brew time and taste. The water temp, the brewer or brewing method, the coffee itself…
Do you have a link to the bellows you use in the video?
These are 3D printed and were given to me by a friend, I think J Kim Makes here on CZcams and IG makes them.
Is there a difference in the recommended grind size for different brewing methods between the generation 2 burrs and the ssp. Like a chart for the first generation.
There is a chart on Fellows site that shows comparable grind setting between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 burrs but I didn't see one that included the SSP MP's.
@@coffeenerdaaron cool thank you, I have been looking to upgrade my grinder and pour over accessories and discovered your channel this morning and I keep coming back to it, I am enjoying your videos.
@@michaelmccormack3482 thank you! Glad you’re enjoying the videos! 😊
Hi there, if I only do pour over with light roasted washed coffee with around 1:16 ratio. I hope that I can get the clear taste. Which burr would you recommend? Gen 1, 2, ssp, or gorilla gear?
Thanks for the wonderful videos.
Thanks for watching and commenting! If you’re only after good clarity and separation of the flavor notes then the SSP MP burrs are probably your best choice at the moment, however the Gen 2 offer great clarity at a lower cost, so I guess it just depends on how much clarity your wanting 😊
@@coffeenerdaaron Thanks for the comparison. It's much more clear for me to decide now.
How many lbs do you have through the Cast lab sweets? I’ve heard they really open up after 15!
I’ll be honest I don’t know since these belong to a friend, but I imagine they have quite a bit run through them and they’re seasoned 😊
@@coffeenerdaaronGot it. I’m on the fence with the lab sweets. I want to love them so was hoping they lost due to lack of seasoning. I’m leaning towards pulling the trigger on them. Using them for espresso and pourover.
@@seniormysterioso7552 they are good burrs, I’m not disappointed in them, I just preferred the cup from the Gen 2 as it cooled. I think for the money the Gen 2 hands down take the win, however they provide different results so it really just depends on your preferences and what your wanting to achieve. Your results may vary from mine, the coffee, the brew method, etc. will all play a role in the results.
Dumb question. Are the SSP cast the same as the SSP MP that the Ode can ship with?
Not a dumb question at all!! They are different, the SSP Cast are design to be more like the very desirable Ditting 807 Lab Sweet burrs.
I find the Cast V2 produce a heavier cup, with darker sweetness. With the same bean I get cooked fruit or caramelized sugar from the Cast, where the Gen2 would be juicier fruit, and white sugar with comparatively less body. But….Cast make amazing espresso, lots of sweetness and acidity.
When you talked about Cast burrs for espresso, do you mean as installed in an Ode? If not then which grinder did you have the Cast burrs?
@@Alex-bd5qj I was talking about the capability of the burrs to produce quality coffee, not specific to any grinder. But yes you could grind fine enough for espresso in the Ode, although the steps are huge and the motor is not rated for that use.
Can you link the bellow
These were given to me by a friend, I think J Kim Makes here on CZcams and IG makes them.
Love to see the shout outs to the AZ coffee scene, I live in NY now but Phoenix is where I found a love for coffee working at Kream! Solid shit my dude, thanks for the comparison 🤙🏼
Thanks!!! I used to love going to Kream! When did you work there?
