The Dresden Files discussion hurts me. People say it "gets good" around book five. What they mean is the stakes get bigger because background things come to the front and it becomes more of a connected, ongoing story rather than stand-alone, modern-wizard mysteries. Book one isn't top tier literature, but it's good and does a lot of legwork establishing the setting and characters. Book two introduces some of the best characters of the series and is a great story.
And only liking Sanderson means you like clean mostly happy endings. I totally understand that because that's difficult to find. If someone has recommendations for similar, I'd love to hear them. Ryria Revelations is the only thing I now I would rate similarly on that criteria.
I tried A Court of Thorns and Roses. I always like we people incorporate classic fairytales in their stories. Wheel of Time and Witcher both do that well. ACOTAR was ok, but it was too slow and predictable and I didn't really connect (not that I 32 M am necessarily the intended audience). I was mostly interested because I had heard it was loosely a connected universe with another series from Maas and I'm a sucker for connected universes. When I finished, I looked up some spoilers about the rest of the series and I had predicted enough of it that I couldn't make myself continue.

Ben! Hyperion isn't just a book you can just pick up and give up after like a hundred pages lol! Whats great about it is if you don't like one story, you might like the others, since its Canterbury Tales style. I think its worth reading all of the stories, even though there was one or two I wasn't super thrilled on. Agreed that the priest tale is the best one, and it really sets up the world of Hyperion.

Ben here - I really want to go back and listen to Hyperion! I think I need to do it on a road trip otherwise it's too easy to set it down and not pick it back up.
I think the only reason why it made it on this list was because if Hyperion was the ONLY book that someone recommended I would just assume that I would also have a hard time with the rest of the recs from that person

Fully agreed with Jake here, Hyperion is one of the best if not THE best SF of the "modern" era, as in post 1980 or so and is probably my favorite read along with Foundation and the like.
EDIT: the Priest story and the Scholar story (his name was Sol) are the best indeed.

Best practice for your reading is to not take reccomendations from others, ever.
Just seek out what interests you.

Hyperion had one of the most unsatisfying endings of any book I've ever read. Most of the stories are mid, others (Priest, Scholar) are amazing. 7/10
That being said, The Fall of Hyperion 9/10 was the saving grace and the publishers should have just kept it as one long book.

Pfft...if you think that's bad, try David Eddings' The Dreamers. That pile of four turds is absolutely terrible. And I actually kind of enjoyed the Belgariad and Mallorean. They weren't great, but they were enjoyable in their way.
But that Dreamers series...ugh...just bad. And then the ending...

I agree just reading Hyperion on its own could be disappointing, since it is a duology. But the two together end amazingly imo. The Fall of Hyperion wraps up everything in such a satisfying way, with almost all of your questions being answered.
