For over a century, 19th century criminal history has been dominated by a single name. With his murders so violent, his acts so senseless, his victims so vulnerable and his legacy so profound, Jack the Ripper is as synonymous with Victorian London as the Queen herself. But whilst Jack was busy ripping, there was another series of murders being carried out that were equally as gruesome, executed by a killer equally as mysterious and whose story shared all the same traits of the Ripper, though despite it all, it is a story that has forever remained in the shadow of Jack, whose reign of terror consumed everything in its path, relegating all other mysteries to the back pages, for well over a hundred years.

I have re-listened to many of the episodes, especially the readings from old newspapers. I love those stories and imagine myself in a comfortable chair by the fire with an actual newspaper in my hands.

As in the Ripper murders, the identity of the Thames Torso killer is most likely dependent on information supplied by people close to him. It is difficult to understand why no one came forward as, unlike in today's society, people in the heart of large cities, in very poor areas, were very rarely living alone and without connections through family, work, or other social interactions. I can only imagine that any family members who had an inkling of what was going on would guard the awful secret, possibly maneuvering events to end the activity somehow.

Lucy Clark, the lady you mention in the very beginning who had just retired at 50 from a life in service (read: a house servant in some capacity) was supposed to be opening a dressmaker's shop and was found dead in the space she planned shortly to open as one. She was a 50 yr old lady. Sounded unmarried with no children as they weren't listed as suspects & I would guess they would be natural ones - instead, her nephews were suspected but not convicted of killing her. In her case I believe someone figured out she had money. She wasn't retiring from service at 50 and opening a dressmaker's shop without any capital. She had had plenty of time to save. Perhaps she was a lady who didn't believe in banks and kept all her money hidden at home or someplace only she could access...I expect someone might have thought so...maybe she let a piece of info slip by accident to someone...or was observed hiding money on her person unawares. THAT would have prompted someone to kill her. I suspect that one was financially motivated.

@@carmichael3594 not nonsense according to a Queens council lawyer who when presented with all the evidence said that the jury would not like this man’s lies and if this case happened today he would be the number one suspect , what were you doing in that street bucks row for 8 minutes with the dead body , the QC said. Maybe you just haven’t seen enough of the evidence try reading cutting point by Christor holmgren or the you tube vid, Jack the Ripper , the missing evidence , or the house of lechmere channel .
