Mariya holds an MSc in physics from Sofia University in Bulgaria and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Munich in Germany. She currently works at the European Southern Observatory (ESO), where she is head of media relations, science advisor to the Department of Communication, and editor of ESO's science & technology journal.
She also appreciates mentoring women and gender minorities interested in pursuing a career in STEM fields. Her professional expertise, complemented by volunteering for social causes, enables her to successfully share her knowledge with people coming from various backgrounds. Honestly, it's really a remarkable knowledge about pollution, another side of thinking. It's truly appreciated.
Living in the High Desert: Specifically, Morongo Basin which includes Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley; you quickly learn the concept of light pollution around the Christmas holiday season when too many exterior lights will result in a warning at best and a ticket at worst. Anyway, I'd rather see the stars at night🌟
I grew up in Los Angeles, California and I never appreciated the night sky until the Army sent me overseas. Where had all those stars been hiding?
I have always said that about Tampa Bay FL. There are so many people living here. There is overcrowding, noise pollution and light pollution. I have wanted to move away for many years now since I lost my husband. It is an overwhelming task to even think of the process by myself.
I get sad when I can't see the sky anymore. Every time I go out to look at the stars; I think about the ones I can't see. I hope we can introduce better solutions to keep light pollution to a minimum.

we exchanged the celestial with the man-made... really, we're out of sync with the dynamics of morning light and evening darkness, more so the seasons, could be the reason for many of our ails. wonderful video on many levels...
