After having seen the orchestra play to a Zaïrean audience in a Brussels nightclub only three weeks earlier, this show was a huge disappointment to me. In Brussels, there had been room for subtlety and intimacy, that show had lasted for nearly 7 hours and the mixing had been excellent, because the person at the soundboard understood the music. They had been playing a home match.
This concert in Utrecht, however, was more like going to the zoo for the audience (actually, the festival took place in a hall built over an ice-rink) and playing an away match for the orchestra. The mix was horrible because, to name one detail, the heart of the music, Franco's guitar, was practically inaudible. So to me, the only songs worth listening to here, are the ones in which Franco does not touch his guitar: Kinsiona, Oh! Miguel and Testament Ya Bowule, in which Franco does not participate at all, but which is partly spoilt by a member of the audience who does not have a clue this is a particularly sad song. (Bowule and Miguel are on part I.)
Anyway, since clips from this show are all over YT at a quality level that defies description, I decided to post this anyway. This is from a dvd, the other post is from a video tape. When Franco signed the deal to play at this festival, he signed away the rights to the recordings. Ntesa Dalienst and several musicians involved with whom we discussed LP's, cd's and videos recorded that day, were upset about these releases.

Le grd maître je me rappelle quand on était petit enfant de la maternelle au Cameroun.C est tes chansons qui se jouaient partout surtout les fêtes de Noël et fin d année.On nous parlait tjrs de Franco mais enfants que nous étions on s intéressait juste à ta bonne musique et c est à l âge majeure qu'on a su vraiment qui tu étais et la preuve aujourd'hui jusqu'à nos jours ta musique se joue au Cameroun et sur dans les grands bars appelés le plus souvent le bar des vétérans.Rip
C'était vraiment super à l'époque, cet orchestre nous a manqué depuis la mort de son patron. Lwambo Makiadi Franco le Congo ne t'oubliera jamais.
La musique faite avec sincérité traversera toujours les âges. Que les âmes de ces grands continuent de reposer en paix et que ceux qui sont encore avec nous soient préservés et honorés 🙏🏽

Etant encore adolescent je me demandais pourquoi mon pere aimait toujours jouer cette music, mais aujourd'hui, apres plus de 20 ans , en reecoutant, ce n est que de beaux souvenirs. On n'a pas besoin de comprendre la langue d'autrui pour vrement apprecier un chef-d'oeuvre parfait. Les belles melodies parlent d'elles seules.

When the group came to Kenya ( Nairobi,Awendo, Kisumu) even grandmas seen to Awendo in the evening were asked " dani - grandma- idhi Kanye- where are you going? Adhi neno Franko...I am going to see Franco" The breaking of the Kisumu stadium perimeter wall was just a climax . By then Madilu System was singing Pesa position.songs like ata nayebi, sandoka, mujinga, ou est le serieux, mario , mamou, &makambo ezali never tire one.

Luambo Makiadi, the greatest of all African musicians really made Lingala known all over the word. By the way, Lingala is one of the most beautiful African languages. The grammar structure of French Creole (spoken in Haiti, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guyana, Dominica, St-Lucia, Seychelles....) is based on Lingala.

In this concert, it was like the TP-OK family was bidding Luambo goodbye. It was one of their greatest public performances before he passed on Two years later.

Franco's music, Franco lovers who were locked outside the stadium, man, they came in with the wall of the stadium! The wall could not stop them!! Franco was truly loved! 💕😘
