  • "They're ghosts, always look down for shadows because shadows turn into sharks and it's not the ones you see you have to worry about, it's the ones you don't see.." Those are the 3 statements made by our dive master that I'll never forget. When you start the clip, pause it the second I get in the cage & you'll see a white shark that I never saw until I reviewed the footage & it was right there...ghosts. Fast forward to around the 2:48 mark and you'll see the second white shark come up from below. Note, the visibility was around 30 feet. That shark is 17ft long and around 8ft wide. Truly awesome. After that shark passes, you'll see what both were looking for..the little sea lion that had gotten separated from the others. Notice the seal lion keeps looking at us, then down..Whites are ambush hunters. Thankfully, the little guy makes it..or at least didn't get eaten in front of us. Towards the end of the video you'll see a cloud of white "pulp" come floating through the cage..those are the remnants of his friend. Once we saw a predation, we would cruise over to it and drop the cage and wait. We certainly got lucky with what we witnessed. Experience of a lifetime. Kurt's reaction in the cage at the end of the video pretty much sums up how we were feeling. ‪#‎Farallons‬

    The little glare in the middle of the camera sometimes makes it seem like there’s a shark heading straight towards you haha

    I can hear Malcom from jurassic Park saying, "there's going to be sharks on this shark dive right"?

    Farralon island water is some of the scariest cuz the visibility is so bad, one minute theres bo sharks and next minute theres a 20 foot white shark looking in your cage!!

    Also you cant chum the waters in California so it makes white shark spotting harder

      Pamela Dean you’re the first one to notice that. I noticed it the first time I watched the footage myself. #alwaysthere :)

      Great book. I read it after the trip. I wish I had read it before the excursion.

    did you only do the one dive and just see the one shark Joe?

      Hi Nop, I'm sorry for the late response as I just saw your comment. I dove several times that day. We saw 5 sharks that day and 5 predations. I was not in the cage the entire time (we had to share), but we had a 17 footer circle our boat 3 times at the surface. It was really awesome. Overall, the day was amazing.

    The seal is lucky. He crossed the kill line. He could have been breached.

    This is a great piece of film, thanks for sharing. I had always thought the visibility very poor for cage diving at the Farallones, so was very interested to see how good it actually was. I'm guessing the water was pretty cold though?
    I am planning a trip there next September (number one on my bucket list) but unfortunately due to health issues cannot dive. Can't wait to see this incredible ecosystem, and hopefully see some white sharks, even as a just a top side observer. :)

      Thank you. You're correct in that the visibility and weather at the Farallones typically is quite poor. We were fortunate in that it was the year of El nino and the water temp was about 12 degrees warmer than usual. I'm sorry that health issues may prevent you from diving, but know that you see plenty topside as well. In fact, we had another 17-18 footer circle our boat 3 times. It was massive and clear as day! I hope you enjoy your trip as much as I did. The charter we used is called Great White Adventures. Great group.

    Do they chum the waters to attract the sharks?

    • @jalbanese74
      @jalbanese74  Před 7 lety +4

      They do not chum the waters. It's actually illegal to chum at the Farallons as they serve as a protected sanctuary. That is actually what was so cool about the entire experience is that we were just watching nature take its course. The reason they run the charters Oct, Nov and Dec is because that is the time of year all of the seals head to the Farallons to breed. There are approximately 9 thousand seals on the island during that time. No need to chum when you have a literal buffet swimming around the island. We saw 5 seals attacked by White Sharks. It was sad to see, but that's nature.

    That cage looks weak. A great white could bust through that cage

      After seeing how big those Whites are..no cage could hold one back. Honestly, they couldn't have cared less about us in that cage.

      Sorry I just saw your comment, Dima. This was 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco at the Farallon Islands. The best months to go are Sept, Oct. Nov as those 3 months are when about 9k seals are on the island so it's regular buffet for the shares!

    That gage has to big a gap, a shark can get caught part way in, they can't swim backwards, it won't change, there's no oversight on the business, they can do whatever they want, I guarantee you a shark will get injured and die eventually.

    Is it worth going in late January

    • @jalbanese74
      @jalbanese74  Před 7 lety +1

      I doubt that it is. The best/prime months are Oct, Nov, Dec. as that is when they run the charters. I don't think Great White Adventures (that's the company we used) runs outside those three months.

  • @amin9965

    if they dont chum tje waters your basically paying to see water and bubbles

    • @jalbanese74
      @jalbanese74  Před 7 lety +2

      I actually read a book called "The Devil's Teeth" about the history of the White Sharks at the Farallon islands and they don't respond to chum in the water like you think they would. I was surprised to learn that. However, at the time if year we went, there are around 9000 seals on the island and about 40-50 tagged white sharks at any given time circling. So, you're right, you may not see one, but we managed to see 5 that day.
