    Still the best start zone of any WoW expansion. The sheer size and "awe" you felt when looking upon this expansive, blasted wasteland forged from decades of war and slaughter. A huge, imposing road of bones and skulls lead to a citadel forged with hate, and the sky resembled nothing else you have seen. Upon stepping outside your factions base camp you'd see a battle-line drawn by the Horde and Alliance in the distance, scattered across it would be numerous skirmishes between players of both sides, and we all had to watch out for a huge mechanical monster wandering the wastes, heralded by it's now iconic BRAUUUUOOOO.
    Every starting zone afterwards felt like it was deliberately separating the playerbase from each other.

  • @mugflub
    @mugflub Před 10 lety +36

    The shitty thing about these games is that the wonder fades and eventually every part of the game is experienced by others, analyzed, broken down, posted about on CZcams, podcasted about, and turned into a blob of facts and stats. It will always be that way. The only way to avoid it is for the game creators to try to consistently create new mystery, which is extremely difficult.

    • @General12th
      @General12th Před 6 lety +7

      Agreed. The rise of WoW channels on CZcams has really crushed the wonder from the game, _especially_ when they talk about their first impressions and ultimately drive the hype train too far. It's inevitable.
      Fortunately, you can stop watching. Stop reading. Just play the game brand-new. You'll experience wonder.

    Might be a bit strange, but facing impossible to defeat demons literally out of the gate was amazing. Not only were they reinforcing that no, you can't just beat the legion and demonic forces are serious business, but connected me with when I've started the game. Some of you might remember, but the Open Beta event for the original release ended with the devs spawning a large amount of elite demons and players having a world's end party. At that time I was exploring the "evade" mechanic as I was shooting at an infernal from the water. Of course I made sure to defeat some later in the Scar where Mannoroth perished, but facing a pit lord and his army brought that impossible odds feeling back.

    My most awe-inspiring moment in all of WoW, and likely all of gaming, was when I first crossed the dark portal on my Orc Warrior into hellfire peninsula. Seeing Skull-level Demons running straight at me as the first thing when I loaded in scared me shitless and let me know that this was the real-deal from here on out. The redness, the skybox, the atmosphere and the music. A bit into leveling, and I see a "fel reaver" in the distance. I think to myself, "oh, its just a visual mob like those demons at the portal meant to scare me!". 5 minutes later, as Im smacking bleeding hollow orcs in the face, collecting wood and iron scraps, fel reaver stomps on my head and promptly kills me. Damn near shit my 12 year old self.

    I must say, Outland truly felt ''Alien''. It's another world, the world our ancestors went to in order to fight unimaginable horrors and secure peace for Azeroth. Crossing the gate is experiencing what they felt as they made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of their peoples : men, dwarves and elves. Plagued by the Burning Legion, ruled by Illidan, ravaged by enraged elements, derelict like a floating carcass...Outland truly is a sight and an experience to behold.

    What's great about this is all the little subtleties that add so much to the overall atmosphere and mood. One of my favorites is what's almost like a low rolling mumble or whimper after the twang at 1:28; a Titan's lament. He weeps in the far distance, helpless, crying that some god may hear his plea and restore his broken world. But there is no answer. His moans serve as a chilling backdrop to the warrior that's just stepped through the portal. The Titans have failed. Our gods are dead. But, no matter. We will succeed where they have failed. Bring on the Legion. We shall not falter.

    i'm first to admit i'm not an oldschool gamer by any means cause i started playing wow during wrath actually started february of 2010, but i'm the type of gamer who got totally sucked into the feeling of vanilla and the burning crusade. by the time my druid finally made it to outland my first thought was a giant caverns of time lol i was new. then once i got the feel for flying, advancing alchemy, discovering flasks, the feel of the sky etc etc i never EVER wanted to leave outland. wrath = bore

    First Expansion: Best Expansion.
    Stepping into this zone and hearing this music was incredible. Replacing Raid gear with green quest rewards was an interesting turn though ;p....and who could forget the FEL REAVER!

      Exactly! I remember it being hard to get rid of some purples and what not, but the stats on those new green items, and how much faster it made killing npc's go, made it all worth it.

    The start of the music reminds me of the first time i went through the portal, on every char when i reach 58 and go through the portal i still get the same feeling of epicness. Outland is for the fucking win

    The brilliance of Hellfire Peninsula's, and in fact, the much of Outland's music (especially Nagrand, Hellfire Peninsula and Terokkar Forest) comes partially from the fact that they are based on Gustav Holst's Planets Suite (Gustav Holst - The Planets).
    And not just Outland: almost every foreign-planet sci-fi or fantasy movie/game music at least partially resembles one or more of the movements.

      Yeah, maybe. I don't know if Holst was really *that* influential, or if maybe "space music" is just common culture now.

    i have a love for outland because the first time i played wow i rmr me and my wow friend questing in zangar together, and we both left and took a break for a while, he didnt ever come back which in a way is quite sad because i got to know the guy and it was a lot of fun questing first time on wow with my undead mage.

    The big mechanical thing is called a Fel Reaver which was made by the Burning Legion. So yes, it is both mechanical and demonic.
    Calm down and enjoy the music :)

    The awesome thing about this music and zone, that really made it special for me, was that it reminded me a bit of Act 2 in Diablo 2 :)

    • @Altermerea

      That's because both Diablo and Outland music was composed by the same guy, Matt Uelmen. I've even heard once that a lot of Outland music was composed with Diablo III in mind (noth the Diablo III we currently have, but a Diablo MMO that was meant to be developed by the original Blizzard North employees, before they all left, Uelmen included) and Blizzard decided to reuse them all in Outland one way or another. Some Outland tracks are straight up ripped off from Sanctuary, just listen to Auchidoun music for example, it fits other Diablo soundtracks almost perfectly, and other Outland zones have that Diablo-esque feel no other expansion after had and not even Vanilla had to be honest.

    Oh my gog. The feeling when I first stepped through the dark portal was beyond description. The nostalgia involved listening to this is beyond my own beliefs. I just wish that the average person could understand how amazing this game was! The countless hours I spent in wow, I don´t really regrett spending them there. Only thing I do miss is that I didn´t make more out of Vanilla and TBC as much as I did WotLK.. and WotLK was not even close to awesomness!
