Grateful Dead - Estimated Prophet (Pittsburgh, PA 7/8/90)

- "Originally released on the very first View From The Vault, this dynamite performance of the classic Weir-Barlow song came out of a long, beautifully paced Eyes Of The World, and is the launching pad for the big second set jam at Three Rivers Stadium in 1990, which later included a terrific Terrapin Station, a rare post-Drums Wang Dang Doodle, and a poignant Black Peter. A wonderful show start-to-end, this Estimated Prophet is one of the highlights." - David Lemieux

I mean, yes of course, thank you, Dave! But why don’t you guys just go ahead and start back releasing the full shows under the Vault Series???
Thanks Dave.
The view from the Vault from 2(?) from RFK is really overlooked...
@@christianjenkins4078 i know i really enjoyed view 2. I love seeing the boys with Bruce
You pick the winner thank you
Phil's bassline SLAYS me on this tune, awesome to see a close up of it at the start of this video!
And the end even though it is a little distorted
Hit it right on the head brother
Phil!!!!
22 years old but my dad has been playing this and fire on the mountain to me since i was in nappies. Raised on the dead, finally got to see Dead & Co, but still mad that i missed out on Jerry. RIP all the legends
Plus Bobby at the height of his polo shirt years! Love it.
When the Grateful Dead began to form, old music was looked over to honor elders' work. This song was one of the old works of early jazz fusing with classical that Lionel Hampton brought out since he was at one of the sessions and was asked to make a small contribution to the Grateful Dead. He gave us access for the good of his family and we began to rise from a dark and weak convergence point to the greatest band in the minds of some people. Many young people did not like art from long ago or the people, but somehow the Grateful Dead moves through the time zones without sounding like broken people.
Hello! One year later and I’m now seeing your comment. I am 22 and have been in to the Grateful Dead for about 2 years or so now. I used to listen to the greatest hits album I’ve had for many years now and then my friend was in to them so he also got me in to the Grateful Dead and now I love them. My favorite band right now (then YES, and RUSH)
@jordancressley3634 welcome to the young one. Enjoy the journey 🙏🍁
This was poetic and beautiful
Appreciate the info and I believe the dead are one of the best to ever do it. Brought so many people together and spread so much love and positivity through their messages, ideologies, and music
Jerry looks so healthy and happy here. Miss you my friend.
Nothing like the old days
Phil Lesh. Unique musical ideas flowed through him nearly as much as Jerry
Incredible energy. Rest peacefully Brent and Jerry 💔
It's crazy how hot they were in 89-90. Maybe my favorite era. And to think before the months end Brent would be gone. Miss him and Jerry
Some of Brent’s last days with the Dead. I miss all the days and the people I hold dear
As do I. We are fortunate to have such magical memories 😎⚡🍺
@@darrenkrivit6854 Yes....if you got to see the band with Brent, you got to see the band with Brent, which was special for sure. :D
Stay away from smack, it will rob your life and soul!
My first Dead show. :)
Yay Pittsburgh! So lucky the dead had some amazing shows in my grate city!
6/5......I be back up
Rising up to paradise on this one
grateful damn I love the estimated outtro jam. Every one of them. The envelope filter, the f sharp dorian for that emotional subtlety that only the modes can evoke. It's not a happy jam, but it's not quite sad. It's looking through old photo albums when it's pouring rain outside. Those times when tears and smiles coexist.
Hell yeah man
Jesus that’s well said
Tears and smiles indeed. Thanks for that wonderful comment.
That’s what’s up!
Right on, the poet says what he sees
Jerry was only 48 at this concert.
This was my favourite show during the summer tour- Crosby, Stills and Nash opening at 3 Rivers Stadium just before it was torn down.
Remember during 'drums" walking out onto the balcony to gaze at the city, a big brilliant moon shining down over the city.
Jerry was only 47 at this show. Not being picky or prickly, but I was thinking of Jerry’s age just as I scrolled & saw your post. Jerry turned 48 on August 1st 1990...this is 3 weeks before.
This was my first Dead Show...I wasn’t a ‘Deadhead’ until I got dosed as I made my way as close as I could possibly get to the stage. When CSN came on, IT KICKED IN! And then, as soon as the first notes of Touch of Grey hit my ears, I was transformed!
I can’t remember quite a bit of time during the show. I was soaring up & floating on a psychedelic wave that took me up & down. Laughing & crying...Fear & Joy. Ended up going to RFK, Deer Creek, & was blessed to see Brent’s last on July 23rd.
For the next 5 years I saw 100+ shows, but the Summer of ‘90 was special. I lived a thousand years that summer.
omg, i thought he was over 60
kakolykia 47, going on 60
Three River's was torn down in 01
Saw this whole summer tour, gone are the days !
Thanks so much for putting this up ! I SO MISS JERRY ! I'm so happy I got to see them play many times . I've gone to Dead n Company a few times. I love the Dead 😚
IIRC Crosby Stills and Nash opened up for them on this hot sunny Pittsburgh day. one of the first shows i attended.
That's right! I was there to and it was like a little slice of 1960's heaven having CSN open up for them!
I was in Sacramento in 1990, having and raising Babies...Great Time!!!
I saw every GD and Jerry Show and heard incredible Music. The People were Wonderful, the Vibe was real and invigorating. Jerry was Happy, you can see and Hear it. I miss him
There was some great moments in the spring and summer of 1990 thanks for this one!!
I believe I was at this show too. 3 Rivers. Good Ship Lollipop. Crescent moon rising over the stadium. Those were the days...
Sadly Brent died just 18 days later- RIP
His high harmonies sound great here
One of Brent's last performances. 18 days, later he would be gone. 😢
Running thru some GD vids.. DANG freaky ABOUT bRENT.. Want to drop a orange barrel and find a soft couch for a couple days ..😀😀
From my first show (Hartford '77) right up to this one, it just got better and better with every year. And then Brent checked out after this summer tour. It was all downhill from there. Whatever it was that Brent brought in, he took with him when he left. It was all a real blast. Nothing compares. Not back then and certainly not now. Never had such a good time in my life before!
New blood has different magic. I try not to make a competition out of it though. I hope you've listened to(or were there to witness) the Hartford 1984 Estimated. A truly transcendent experience.
@@frwarren1111
I went to every Hartford show I could which was probably every time they played there since '77. JGB too! I lived only a short ferry ride and drive away. There's no competition, I just liked the band more with Brent. I love all of it.
This is beautiful ✌️❤️
Thank you for this
Just looked at the date and location....I was there! 😁😁 Summer Tour 1990!
Long strange trip for sure. Looking back now, I see how truly Blessed we were to experience the Dead and travel as a group of friends. So many influences from those days still permeate my daily life! GRATEFUL!!
CSN opener for that show, and it was HOT
@kevinbortz2854 Exactly!! How I forgot to mention that in my original write-up I have no idea? Thank you for additional awesomeness for that great show. I believe it was summer solstice as well.
I was there! Grate show!!
No buds but lots and lots of beer!!
What a wonderful surprise upload! Thank you so much
Thank You for this It is my all time favorite version of Estimated Prophet!!
Check out Nassau 3/29/90 or Miami 10/26/89
Hartford 1984!!
Thank you for sharing this! Nice quality video. Brent on keys, Bobby sounds great and Jerry is smiling. So am I! Boy, I sure do miss those days. I can’t wait until the videos start coming more regularly!
I’m sad/glad I was born in 97. Sad cause I didn’t get to see Jerry or Brent. Glad cause I would have spent all my money to see them. Lol.
alaskakyle it was expensive back then!
@@gratefuljr I used to get so mad when Ticketron would charge $1.50 service fee, and then it went to $2.00 and was even more mad. Now they want 15%+ of the ticket value in service fees.
When I started going it was 4 bucks and that included a cookie!
@alaskakyle more importantly aside from the value of the tickets was the fact that all the tickets were, more or less, the same price regardless of venue, and sold at a first come first serve through their Grateful Dead Offices. That's what made following them for a protracted period doable.
@alaskakyle yeh I remember getting ticks from a chick I met thru a friend I just met for Jerry at the Capital Theater. They were front row with nobody else in the front row for some reason. It was really uncomfortable until people realized those seats weren't getting filled and started to join us. But really strange for almost the entire opening act(Dr. John).
Magic Mojo, Kismet, Ticket God's smiling down upon me; I try not to over analyze it. Knowing me(which I do on occasion) probably just Dumb Luck. I'll take what I can get and give thanks to them all(just in case).
Downright freaking AWESOME! Thank you for posting this incredible video. It made my day. Love these boys. (~):-}
RIP Brent and Jerry!
Chuck Monk (from Facebook) An amazing show from beginning to end. Crosby Stills & Nash started things off with a beautiful set. The whole band watched from the side of the stage. Then a rainbow pattern hot air balloon floated over in the middle of Row Jimmy.
Always the best music to listen to
would never have expected a show from pittsburgh on here. much love
Aww chit!! I was at this show, first road trip to see the Dead. A perfect 10/10 in all phases.
Wonderful memories of summer tour. The last golden age of the Grateful Dead.
yes it was
This is one of Bobbys best song of his ! He has so much passion on this one !
Bobby really got into it on this one, thanks for the upload!
I have seen you many times Bob stay alive Mr grateful
"They're gonna light my wayyy...Hey heyyyy...yeahhhh"
Happy Jerry rockin' tha house with my favorite GD jam song
Awesome Estimated and yaya Pittsburgh!
Such an amazing summer tour. MISS THIS!
Great vocal effort, outstanding.
Came for the Phil and Jerry and stayed for the Bobby 😉

LFG Bobby!
Hands down some of Mr Weirs best work. An amazing tune.
Love every note of this song...Happy Birthday Jerry on this 8/1/2020
Yeah, so watching this is what I'm doing tonight. Thanks!
I have this show on DVD so I appreciate the reminder to enjoy it again, soon! Nice cut.
Bob is gettin it love this thanks!!!
Dave is just NAILING it on these releases.
The soundtrack of my life
Phil Bombs galore on Estimated...love the vibration from that when the volume is turned up to 10 :-)
more please, the full second set would be great - loving these super high quality vids - 480p never looked better
I was at this show with my then-girlfriend, as well as my sister. Crosby Stills and Nash open up for The Boys on a BEASTLY hot day in Pittsburgh...
Best version. Sonically and visually.
Great video quality..
PURE FIRE!
Did the whole summer tour selling pasta out of the '74 green Champion handivan. best summer of my life. the band was on almost every night and the crowds were huge but fun. Had John Barlow in our van in the parking lot this day for a visit. Heard Brent died while on the way to red rocks for the rumor show that of course never happened Never forget the memories.
Forever Greatful!
What a thumbnail, cant listen right now but definitely saving this version for later specifically cuz of the emotion on Bobby's face in the thumbnail
Right-on. Rock star Bobby@ his Best!
Horrifyingly surreal performance. Such an eerie end half, truly awesome experience. I believe this performance of this song is the most important example of GD encompassing the true meaning of their songs live.
I feel kinda bad that I was born in 2001 an not able to see the dead but at least these vids give me a little taste of what it was like but I’m sure this is nothing compared to being in the crowd and seeing the sights and feeling the sound move you in that moment in time and space god I wish I was there ✌️👣🌎🌜🌞
Okay, now this is epic
I find it hard to comprehend how that was almost 30 years ago. Jerry looks engaged and relatively healthy!
Next video should be Eyes circa 1973...no?
Or how about something from Canada Mr. Lemieux?
Anyways, excellent choice!
Sensational
Not seen this one before, epic jams 😀
You can get the whole show on the first "View from the Vault" DVD release. The whole show is sick.
this RULES
My first show. ❤
Everytime I hear this song intro my boogie shoes can't stay still.
Thanks for the turn on
Classic Bobby in an awesome way.... yes I know that it ain’t easy being cheesy for you Chester .... but keep on keeping on..
my first show
Saw the end of this tour up to Tinley Park. Then we got the unimaginable news. :(
Justin Hyers Me, too. Brent was my favorite keys player. I was heartbroken when he died as I imagine we all were.
Did the acid kick in halfway through this jam or was it just me 🤯 ⚡️💀✌🏻❤️
Bobby perfection!!
3 rivers had to be a CRAZY venue to play at..
At Dead in Vt i watched a roadie tune a guitar for like an hour on stage before the dead came on.
After he left people clapped, and i realized it had been bob dylan the entire time... swift
This music is my actual reach and religion... This is how I communicate and feel my higher power. Raised Catholic even catholic school briefly...(3rd generation Irish Roman Catholic) I dont dismiss all of that... however, my higher power is not quite that fit. My husband and I raised our boy the same. He knows what his higher power is and how to reach and communicate with. He was raised since before birth, with this music and that( layman's )being able to read and or search for meanings between the lines is crucial
I've had enough but I need some more
I was there for this tour
Let us shine
i am there. watching bob channel tom waits. thx for posting.
Bobby the howling Wolf Brother
I was there!
I'm ready to see the guys man! Haven't got to see a show since Jerry passed away! And that's on me, and the music is still the same
