Ballet is a toxic mess and I'm glad I left before I developed a more severe eating disorder. Knowing now that a lot of dancers think the same as her (looking at the comments and likes) makes me so uncomfortable...
Ballet is meant to be fun, not sad and bodyshaming. When I was in fourth grade, I had ballet teacher (we will call her Mrs. D) and she has made an impact on my life that I will never forget. Mrs. D would always talk about how ballerinas are meant to be agile, skinny, and light. She like all ballerinas wore a leotard and tights but gave me and the other girls my age really tight uncomfortable ones which showed alot of skin in the back. The first time I wore one it was so tight I sucked my stomach in so I did not show weight. I ripped the tights the first time, which made me feel fat and overweight. In class, Mrs. D compared girls as young as eight to 16 year olds. She made everyone insecure. After awhilebof this happening, I confided to my mom that Mrs. D was doing this. Her and I went to the dance company instructor and told her about this happening. She was astounded by what she was doing and we had a new teacher the next month. It was very nice to have no one body shaming me during class, but I still felt uncomfortable after her doing it to me. I quit dance. I was free to do whatever I wanted, which included theatre, piano, and drawing. I do still dance in theatre, but it is hard when showtime comes around. I both love and hate final performances. I hate it because of the leotard, which I now have trauma about. After dance, my self esteem was better and I was stronger at talking good about myself. I am not saying ballet is a bad thing, I am saying it is fun when in a friendly environment.
This is really relatable bc I do ballet. I’ve been doing it since I was 3 1/2. I just started pointe this year and it’s kinda stressful. Even though I’m 11 years old, this is a good sport for me even though others don’t enjoy it.
