  • This video will show you how to make Onigiri wrappers using the stuff on hand: aluminum foil and scotch tape. If you have a cute masking tape, that will do and perfect 💕
    Now you can keep Nori seaweed sheet fresh and crisp until you're ready to eat!!!
    NOTE 1: 240g (0.5lb) rice & 2 tsp. Sesame oil (or any oil is ok) to coat the rice.
    NOTE 2: By mixing oil in rice, you can keep the rice MOIST and SOFT even if you keep it in the fridge. Which means, you can make this onigiri a night before and store it in the fridge for your lunch 😉
    NOTE 3: Instead of mixing in the oil, you can brush the aluminum foil with oil. You can use either idea depending on the Onigiri you make.

    Pro tip: instead of putting all the oil in the rice you can instead lightly brush the inside of the aluminum foil with oil (the side where you put the onigiri -> 3:53) 👍🏻 works great and is an alternative especially if you have flavored onigiri where the oil would interrupt the taste.

    • @ochikeron
      @ochikeron  Před 6 lety +26

      yes! both works. i recommend using either idea depending on the onigiri you make 👍thanks!!!

    Thank you for the recipe, just made for the first time the onigiri and this diy wrapper. :) Was tasty! I can't buy bonito where i live, but i cooked nori tsukudani from another recipe and also added some chopped salmon with a little wasabi. :) My foil was a little thick, i'll try to find a more thin next time, but i loved the idea! :) Only sizes somehow surprized me. I used sushi round rice, measured exactly 250g, rinced it well in water for some times, left to rest for 30 minutes without water, then cooked with a little of water covering it and enough of steam inside the pan, mixed with sesame oil and a little salt. And got amount enough for 4 big onigiri, i think i could even make 6. No idea how the same amount for 2 onigiri gave me so much of rice lol. :)

    Thank you for the tutorial! Genius Idea! I had a question though, I sometimes make my onigiri the night before for my lunch the next day. Lately I have noticed the rice is getting a little hard on the outer shell of the onigiri. Is there a better method to storing my onigiri or a temperature that is best? I know its better fresh but I sometimes dont have time in the morning to make some for my lunch. Thank you!

    • @ochikeron
      @ochikeron  Před 6 lety +75

      VERY GOOD QUESTION!!! actually, mixing oil in rice is called "oil onigiri" and known in japan for the onigiri not getting hard even keeping in the fridge!!! try mixing oil like i showed you in this video~ then the onigiri is SOFT and MOIST even if you keep it in the fridge for 24hrs. it is just amazing~ but make sure you eat within a day before it loses flavor.
      so make this onigiri and keep in the fridge. take it for your lunch~ i don't recommend keeping nori in the fridge but it is okay if you don't have time! i would do that :)
      btw, if you keep the cooked rice (no oil mixed) in the fridge, usually it gets soft when you microwave. however you don't want to keep the rice in the fridge over 24hrs. it gets way too dry and bad. if you want to keep the rice over 24 hrs, you need to freeze it wrapped in plastic wrap. the same thing, you can microwave when you eat.

      I just made them and got 1 extra that will be eaten tomorrow. I just left it in the plastic wrap without nori. I thought about your comment that moment, that it's also possible to store it for night in the plastic wrap in the fridge, and the foil wrapped nori separately in some dry place, so it will be just seconds to wrap the ready onigiri with foil-nori in the morning. :)
