For the record, Jason Mewes is 100% sober and has been for awhile now. I know he is very proud of it. His wife Jordan and daughter Logan are huge in his life and with the new movie Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, you will likely see a different performance from Jason. He was really drinking heavily on the original Jay and Bob movie and had a huge history of all kinds of addiction and drug use. I am super proud of him for the commitment to sobriety he has made.

Funny thing is, Steve-O's hoarse from throwing up too often. Wrecked his voice.
It's kind of a mix of things, but heavy smoking and drug use gives them the same raspy, nasal vocal register. Their underlying accent is quite different, though. Jason has a pretty distinct New Jersey accent, whereas Steve-O has a much a more mixed accent that comes from having spent a lot of time in both the UK, South America and the US as a child. You can notice that Steve-O has a very different accent to both his father and his sister, despite sounding a lot more similar in early videos when he was a teenager. Steve-O and Jason likely sounded quite different to each other at one time. What makes them sound alike is the overriding nasal register in their speech. That's what smoking and abuse of particular drugs causes. It's a result of damage to the soft palate at the back of a person's throat. Normally, the flesh there directs air from the chest mostly through the mouth when speaking, but as it gets damaged, more air passes through the nose when speaking, resulting in a higher, raspier sound. If you're able to shift your soft palate (as some people are), you can create this effect yourself by speaking while relaxing it and letting it drop down. It's similar to the way the sound of snoring is produced. When the soft palate vibrates during expulsion of air, you get a high pitched rattling sound (depending on they type of snoring).

That shit comes mostly from chain-smoking cigs etc. One of my friends is ten years younger than Mewes, never fixed shit in his life, never smoked crack or did none of that type of thing. And his voice was gravelly and bassy as fuck a decade ago already(my friend's I mean). Another one of my friends is Mewes' age, he's a cigarrette(and weed and whatever) smoking injecting druggie and his voice is nowhere near that gravel-tone.

Maybe it’s just not my humor but I tried watching chasing amy, mallrats and some others and just don’t get it.. I don’t get why the humor is “so funny”. More annoying than anything else. Dumb and dumber is funny.. this guys not.. at least that’s my opinion.. humor is very subjective I guess
