When Mr. Rogers stares into the camera at 2:29 and smiles, it feels like he is trying to mock those who fear African Americans in their pool. Smiling directly into the faces of haters.
I thought the exact same thing when I saw this the first time. I wish I could go back in time and give the man a big warm hug. We lost something really pure the day he died.
Yep 🤣
I chuckled a little. Its as if Mr. Rogers was thinking "I dare you to say something. I dare you!"
Nah, it's not like that. He's not about confrontation and being arrogant about his values. He's about peace. That smile is pure. There's no showmanship to it, that would devalue everything he is doing.
@@wardencobb7442 Ya never know lmao
"I don't have a towel"
"Oh you can share mine"
Subtle yet profound
Mr. Rogers did believe in stating things as simply as possible.
Same pool and same towel only way he would make this more on point is if brought the officer to a friend who had a pool and they both went swiming together.
Also later version of that scene, it is Mr. Rodgers who dries Officer Clemmons' feet. Such a Jesus thing to do.
That hotel manager reacting violently to young black children in his pool. Absolutely traumatizing.
I bet he is in jail or somewhere worse
@@Novasigmia - I don't think he was ever charged. But I don't think his later career options were all that good either. So while he was able to escape being brought to trial, he was not able to escape justice.
@@FLJBeliever1776 thank god for justice
@@Novasigmia - Especially, when it comes to being called Karma.
Keep in mind that we are shocked because this is in the past. Today is not perfect, but it's better because of Fred and Francois.
"But I don't have a towel."
"Oh you share mine!"
Favorite part. God I miss this man.
ME TOO. In a world where whites & blacks did not share towels because of government-imposed segregation, Mister Rogers demonstrated that ALL human beings are equal, and we will share everything, from towels to pools to friendship
.
That part stood out to me the most as well. Just how surprised the officer was to hear Fred say “oh you share mine!”. Especially considering how racial times were back in the 1960’s. Just that fact that Fred made such a huge statement like that doing what he did being a white man himself back then is absolutely a beautiful thing.
I just love how he just immediately jumps in and says, "Oh, you can share mine!"
And it's so normal to the younger generation "Yeah, he shared his towel. What's the big deal?" And it's thanks to people like him that they have that mindset.
Mr. Rogers was also a Christian though. So there's no way to tell of he was just doing it for his eternal reward in heaven.
The grin at the end towards the camera was the single biggest middle finger that Mr. Rogers could have POSSIBLY done towards racism and segregation. America does not deserve Fred Rogers.
No one does
Perhaps not deserve.. but we sure NEED him .

Only time he actually got angry was when KKKunts used his image.

I wish this man had ran for president. He would’ve won.
Then quit after the first term because of what he has seen

Probably not. Sure, he was admired by many during his lifetime, but he was also mocked, and people would sometimes accuse him of emasculating the culture. He was a prime example of how the greatest of us aren't fully appreciated in our own lifetime.
nah, politics requires someone ugly, politics are too ugly for Mr Rogers, they only thing he could've done was be an example
Sadly, a good natured and good hearted person like Rodgers wouldn't last a year in the White House.

Fred Rogers didn't see your color, religion, social status or your handicap...He just saw, YOU, and loved you for it. This gentle, caring, loving man has left our world, and in time of turmoil and grief of today, we sure can use a great neighbor, again, like him. Miss You, Mr. Rogers.
What about sexuality? Clemmons was forced to stay in the closet.
@@alicefitzpatrick5955 To be fair, that was considered a mental illness before, so if he come out they could send him to an asylum.
It’s not a compliment to say, “I don’t see color.” Of course, we want all of ourselves to be seen. It implies that there’s something wrong with our color and ultimately US. Of course, we see color. It’s the judgment we make that counts.
@@Webbgurl2000 No it doesnt, its pretty simply, I dont care what color you are, Im going to treat you no different then I treat anyone else.
I totally agree with you on that. The problem in our society today is we view people on their social status, color, and religion. The problem is we don’t look at what’s inside ourselves, and other people. We need to look more at the feelings of others, and accept people for who they are, instead of looking at the different stereotypes of others
Brings tears to my eyes. Mr. Rogers was an angel
I'm not even religious and I'm convinced he's an actual angel
@@rafthethinker4948 yeah he was
Oh man, this clip stopped before it explained the full story. 24 years later, in Officer Clemmons' final appearance on the show, they recreated the scene. Except that this time, instead of the officer drying off his own feet, Mr. Rogers dried them for him, in homage to the Biblical scene of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples as an act of humility and love.

Mr. Rogers really was the positive influence that kids in America needed. I still remember sitting in the living room with my mom singing along to "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood" as a young boy.
2:31 Fred purposefully looks at the camera and smiles. A show of how he intended to make the scene.
Mr. Rodgers would be very disappointed in us right now. 😔

If you go find the full clip of the wading pool scene, there's also another part towards the end where Officer Clemmons is getting ready to leave and says how he wishes he could stay longer and Mr. Rogers says he knows how busy Officer Clemmons is. And then Mr. Rogers looks up at the camera and says, "But sometimes just a minute like this will really make a difference." Of course he was talking about the cool, refreshing water, but I suspect he was saying more than that. I like to think he was also asserting his hope that just a minute with the two of them sharing a wading pool together on camera would really make a difference. Absolutely brilliant! God bless you, Mr. Rogers.

That face that Mr Rogers makes at the end is an Fu to the bleachers
Didn't catch that, but yes. Yes it was.
Always loved that about mr. Rogers, combating something as horrible as racism in the kindest way, without losing his cool
It only just now dawned on me that the people he had on, like the cops and postman and what not were not really those people in real life, but actors.
In these times, we need Fred Rogers more than ever

I love how Mr. Rogers makes direct eye contact with the audience at the end
I may have been more into cartoons and such growing up, but I'd always watch Mr. Rogers reruns with my late grandma. I think everyone needs to be as loving and accepting as him, especially now. Forget politics, forget religion, forget hate.
He was a white Man who realized He was a human being and humanity has no colour! To be Human is to have heart and without heart nobody can be human!

They cut out the best part. When Mr. Rogers dried off Officer Clemmons feet.
CrazyCatLady78 I feel like Fred did that as a reference to the biblical story of Jesus washing the disciples feet. Kinda like “we’re all equal and can help each other”
@@fileoffish1403 I was about to say this. Given the fact that Mr. Rogers was a minister, I think it was definitely a reference to that.
There are actually two times Mr. Rogers and Officer Clemmons shared a wading pool. This was the first one in 1969. In 1993, they recreated the scene in Officer Clemmons' final appearance on the show. That's the scene where Rogers dries Clemmons feet. And you're right...it is a great moment in TV history! :)
We need to heed Fred's simple message more than ever in this ghastly year 2020.
RIP fred rodgers. The world sure could use someone like you today.

Fred Rogers was a gem.
And so is Francois Clemmons (who is still with us as of this writing).
To make this statement at that time was very brave on both of their parts, and I'm glad they made it.
I never got to see Mister Rogers Neightbourhood when I was a kid. Australia, we didn't have it to my knowledge. But I was lucky to have a mother who believed in much the same values, and despite having never seen a single episode of Mister Rogers... I can't help but tear up because of who this man was and is to people. Because even without seeing the show, hearing about the man is just... beautiful.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, [Jesus] put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. Bravo. His message is so powerful, even to this day.
Wow, this is really touching. How something as simple as inviting someone to dip their feet in your paddling pool can show such a sweet message about love and tolerance.
Imagine they wouldn't even let African American's go into a swimming pool with Caucasian American's. The fact they used the push them out with poisonous chemicals is disgusting.
I'm glad that Mr Rogers pushed against prejudice in such a loving, gentle way.
To everyone commenting on Fred’s smile at the end of the video.
I don’t see it as Fred mocking the haters or giving an f you gesture.
I think the smile is Fred’s way of trying to change the hearts of the haters as if he’s saying “It’s not so bad to share the pool with others who are different. They are just like us.”
Fred understood that you succeed by changing hearts.
I wish Mr Rodgers was still here. Especially in these times 🖤
Mr. Rogers testimony inspires me so much to be a better man but when Jeff came to surprise him at the TV Hall of Fame I just couldn’t hold it in any longer and tears came out of my eyes as a rush of emotions just hit me because of how amazing of a kind hearted and pure of a human being Mr. Rogers was and the sorrow of knowing what a brutal, dark and overbearing world we live in that he tried and succeeded very much in protecting our children from it which included myself. I think all adults should learn from Rogers on how to be the right figure for our children as we all are truly children at heart and never let go of the kid in us. Adults are merely the same as kids but pretending to put on a mask of being somehow more mature and emotionally in control than children when really we aren’t any different and merely learned to hold in our emotions which is much worse than letting it out like we did as children.
Mr. Fred Rogers will always be a legend! If i go to heaven id sure like to meet him. One of my childhood heros.
