- Summer of '42 is a 1971 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film based on the memoirs of screenwriter Herman Raucher. It tells the story of how Raucher, in his early teens on his 1942 summer vacation on Nantucket Island (off the coast of Cape Cod), embarks on a one-sided romance with a young woman, Dorothy, whose husband had gone off to fight in World War II.
The film was directed by Robert Mulligan.The film (and subsequent novel) were memoirs written by Herman Raucher; they detailed the events in his life over the course of the summer he spent on Nantucket Island in 1942 when he was fourteen years old.[3] Originally, the film was meant to be a tribute to his friend Oscar "Oscy" Seltzer, an Army medic killed in the Korean War.[3][6] Seltzer was shot dead on a battlefield in Korea whilst attending to a wounded man; this happened on Raucher's birthday, and consequently, Raucher has not celebrated a birthday since. During the course of writing the screenplay, Raucher came to the realization that despite growing up with Oscy and having bonded with him through their formative years, the two had never really had any meaningful conversations or gotten to know one another on a more personal level.[3]
Instead, Raucher decided to focus on the first major adult experience of his life, that of falling in love for the first time. The woman (named Dorothy, like her screen counterpart) was a fellow vacationer on the island whom Raucher had befriended one day when he helped her carry groceries home; he became a friend of her and her husband and helped her with chores after her husband was called to fight in World War II. Raucher went to bed with her one night when he came to visit her, arriving only minutes after she received notification of her husband's death.[3] The next morning, Raucher discovered that she had left the island, leaving behind a note for him (which is read at the end of the film and reproduced in the book). He never saw her again; his last "encounter" with her, recounted on an episode of The Mike Douglas Show, came after the film's release in 1971, when she was one of over a dozen women who wrote letters to Raucher claiming to be "his" Dorothy.[7] Raucher recognized the "real" Dorothy's handwriting, and she confirmed her identity by making references to certain events only she could have known about.[7] She told Raucher that she had lived for years with the guilt that she had potentially traumatized him and ruined his life. For me....it was the summer of '64. I was 19 and she was 26. She lived across the hall from me in my apartment building. I had only moved to L.A. a few months before. We spent many an evening together. I was caught up with an older woman finding me facisnating. In 1968, she invited me to her wedding. She later even asked me to come over and see her new baby girl. We shared a special moment in time back in 1964. I will always treasure it.

@Honest John, let's just say I'm still a gentleman even at my age now. I was 19 and certainly not that experienced, but she was very tender with me and never made me feel inadequate. It was a growing up experience for me. I was also drafted at 19 for Viet Nam, so I couldn't scoop up as much of life as I wanted. I never knew if I would even have a future. I was lucky in so many ways.
The movie, the music, a boy’s first love. Such an excellent movie that it may never be made again.

On Jan.8,1972 until Aug. 13, 1972 I found the love of my life for a short time. We were in the Air Force. The first time I took to dinner at Christie’s in San Antonio, than a day later I took her to see: Summer of ‘42. We felt in love for seven months I was in heaven until we got orders for overseas, on Aug. 13, 1972 she left for Germany and I for Japan. 18 months later I came home in May 5, 1974. In May 8, 1974 a friend wrote to tell me my girlfriend was marrying someone else, my life has been over since than I try dating but not the same for me I married and marriage felt after 11 years now for the past 37 years I’ve been alone still thinking of my first love. There was a saying for this movie, Summer of 42, was, “In everyone’s life there’s a Summer of 42,” for me yes and always will be.
Sometimes you get the perfect person to play the perfect part.... Loved it while it lasted. But slowly it's slipping into the great oblivion where people have neither the time nor the sensitivity to appreciate these finer emotions

I was 12 when this movie came out and what I would give to go back to the early 70's.
She had that wholesome look, that seems to have passed into history.
I remember women back in the 60s and 70s were just as you described them; gorgeous and wholesome. As time passed, we no longer see women like that. I'm not sure what happened in our society. I'm thankful I grew up during that time.

For a man watching this film, it has captured the feelings of first time love so perfectly it's hard to put into words.....but that beauty is that of a fallen Angel, and combined with the incredible music which I played at my father's funeral...it takes us all back to days when it seemed alot simpler and where there was so much to look forward too

Watched it for the first time months before my 31st birthday when I was still 30 what lead me watch it was through the late Syrian poet & diplomat Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998) from one of his books 📚 " the Book of Love , كتاب الحب Kitaab al-Hubb " c.1970 and the music was played in the background and since then I started getting intrigued about the movie 🎬 that I shared it with my brother, he too liked it very much , he was more into Jennifer O'Neil than anything to whom he found extremely attractive
1997 to 2024 - timeless for me.

OMG she was so beautiful, she just had that look. I loved this movie. The book was great too. I've read it 3 times. Some times I dust off the book and just re-read it. Jennifer was injured after falling off a horse she was riding I think, which was why her acting career wasn't so pronounced. What a Gem she was.
Absolutely love the theme performed by Michel LeGrand. Personally I enjoy his style a lot more. The movie was memorable. Great casting.

The books is great also. Very funny and heart warming book. It's a Hilarious book especially chapter 8. I've read and re-read the book 4 times over the years. I just get nostalgic and dust it off and re-read it. I've moved and lost the book so I just re-order it.
Just some facts.
Herman Raucher (the author) wrote this originally as a Screenplay, and SOLD the screen play to a studio. And the Studio decided to make the movie. Originally, they wanted an 'older woman' to play the part as in 30+ years old.
Then Jennifer O'Neill audition and got the part. But she had reservations about the 'Nudity' because Jenn, didn't want to do nudity. She was assured that the 'scene' would be done 'tastefully and with style' and to "not" show nudity in any erotic or vulgar way.
Hence that last bedroom scene, we never "actually" see them 'making love' it's just left to the viewers imagination.
This screenplay was "actually the author Herman Raucher's Biography" these events all really happened to him. There was a "Dorothy".
After the movie came out Herman the author received 6 letters from fans who claimed to be Dorothy. One of those 6 was the real Dorothy, Herman knew because he recognized the "handwriting" and that Dorothy knew details that only the Real Dorothy could know. But Dorothy closed the fan letter by saying, "it's best they not re-visit the past". aka not meetup again. And they let it lie.
After the filming of the movie, the producers weren't sure if the movie would be a success, and they asked Herman to make the script into a book and write a book based on the script. Herman agreed and finished the book in 2-weeks.
The Book "Summer of 42" was an Instant Bestseller. Hence the movie Trailer and advertising posters said, "Based on the Bestseller Summer of 42".
The movie itself was an Instant hit also becoming that years (1971) sleeper hit raking in $43 million. The movie was made for a paltry $1 million budget and was actually filmed up in Mendocino, CA up northern CA between Eureka (near Oregon border) and San Francisco even though it was based on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts where Herman use to spend his summers. Packett Island (where the book and movie mention) was a made-up location, it doesn't exist. Because the producers weren't sure if the movie would be a hit they didn't pay Herman but offered him 10% of earnings which was a windfall for Herman because he says between the movie and book proceeds it continues to pay his bills to today. The book has gone into 4 re-prints because the book sold out. You can get the book on Amazon for $2 plus shipping.
Jennifer O'Neill for her part the movie 'made' her and she was in high demand after this movie both as a model and actress. Jennifer led a storied life with 8 marriages. She almost died 3 times. Overdose attempt at age of 15 from heartsick because her parents wouldn't let her keep her pet dog and cat. Then she's an Equestrian and during a jump with a horse, the horse fell on her and broke her neck/back in 3 places. Then a gun accidentally discharged and nearly killed her. For 30 years she was Cover Girl for their line of cosmetics. And led a storied life. Jenn later bought the rights to Summer of 42' and wanted to make a Sequel but nothing became of it.
There are 3 things that made this movie.
1. The wonderful script. Those words were actually said and done because it was Herman Raucher (Hermie's) Biography. That summer of 42' happened to him.
2. Jennifer O'Neill made the movie, her sensitive portrayal of Dorothy was amazing. You could see the bags under her eyes in the bedroom scene where she was actually crying.
3. The Haunting Music score by French composer Michel Legrand. For which they won the Oscar for best Original Score in 1972.

Dorothy wasn't that much older, Dorothy was only 21-22 which was the Exact age of Jennifer O'Neill when she got the part and acted in this movie.

The screen play was originally about Hermie's and Oscy's friendship and a dedication to Oscy (Oscar Seltzer) and a dedication to his (Hermie's) Mother who had passed by 1971; Hermes "adored" his mother, and if you read the book, he praised her like this all knowing Mom, or when the movie was made, but but the stuidos took it and evolved into a story about Hermie and Dorothy.
The book was originally about childhood friends, hermes and Oscy, his best friend.
Oscy would later get drafted and served in the Korean War; Oscy would later be in the Army and was killed during the Korean war as a Medic while he was tending to another wounded soldier. That death was on Hermes's 24 birthday. Thus the screenplay was originally a dedication to Oscy. But Hermie also had "survivor's guilt".
Thus Herme never celebrated another Birthday again.
Which is evidence by Hermies other book about a returning soldier with PTSD who moves into a Haunted house and the spirits mess with him. I think the spirits messed with Hermie who had survivors guilt. Hermie also did another book called "Sweet November", and they made a movie with a more modern re-make with Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron.

Then she's an Equestrian and during a jump with a horse, the horse fell on her and broke her neck/back in 3 places. Then a gun accidentally discharged and nearly killed her. For 30 years she was Cover Girl for their line of cosmetics. And led a storied life. Jenn later bought the rights to Summer of 42' sequel and wanted to make a Sequel but nothing became of it. Jennifer is actually Brazilian born in Brazil then her parents moved to Connecticut when she was young and then to NY. Born to a British mother and American Father who met during his stint in England during WW2.
Jennifer loved horses and pet dogs, And really tried to kill herself when her parents too them away. I think the accidental shooting with a Colt .45 / aka 1911 was her trying to kill herself, but she says it was accidental. .How do you accidentally shoot yourself in the gut with a .45.?
Here parents thought her younger years were "acting out"; they were according to her fully in love, and didn't really show her any affection, so she sought and got affection from animals.
She later became a "born-again-christian" and lives in Tennessee or kentucky on her horse range, and runs a Veteran PTSD rescue on her ranch with her Christian husband. Based on her autobiography "Surviving Myself," Jennifer O'Neill moved to a farm in Tennessee in the late 1990s.
There are 3 things that made this movie.
1. The wonderful screenplay. Those words were actually said and done because it was Herman Raucher (Hermie's) Biography. That summer of 42' happened to him. Except it was on the East coast somewhere up in Maine or Massachusetts
2. Jennifer O'Neill made the movie, her sensitive portrayal of Dorothy was amazing. You could see the bags under her eyes in the bedroom scene where she was actually crying.
3. The Haunting Music score by French composer Michel Legrand. For which they won the Oscar for best Original Score in 1972.
