  • This song was written by Harold Arlen for the 1939 MGM classic THE WIZARD OF OZ. It is widely believed to be the most loved and enduring popular song of the 20th century. It is played here on the 1929 RCA theremin that once belonged to the late Hollywood thereminist, Dr. Samuel Hoffman.

One of the first to use it was the 1953 science fiction movie It Came From Outer Space. Cool instrument that can really create an eerie atmosphere.

      to my understanding their was revived interest in the 60's when Brian Wilson of the beach boys incorporated it into the top 40 hit, "good vibrations," but the popularity was short lived, my guess is that the Moog synthesizer which was all the hype at the time was able to produce similar sounds causing the theremin to fall into obscurity and as a novelty being as it is difficult to play, much practice and completely "by ear," many are lost without sheet music and other points of reference.

    Lev Theramin could have simply built the instrument with a sine wave and it would have been pretty good, but he took it to the next level and designed a unique waveform with an organic character and beauty to rival any physical instrument. The timbre sounds like a blend of human voice and violin. Even without the expressiveness of the ingenious control interface, the raw sound is a masterpiece.

      hozeishere Not even! I seriously wish someone would invent another hands-free electrical-field instrument. It's been almost a century now, someone has to have thought of a way to do something this cool with unshielded electronics since then!

    To anyone whose ever played a musical instrument, what a wonderful performance this is. Imprecise because it’s totally done with the hands not touching the instrument itself, but also beautiful and quite challenging to play. Plus, Over the Rainbow is not an easy melody to perform. Beautifully done! Bravo!

    • @G6JPG
      @G6JPG Před rokem

      It's not an easy melody to _remember_ , let alone perform! It's quite complex. But worth it. (No, I can't play it [on my harmonica or keyboard] - I can never remember how it goes all the way through.)

      Check out Grégoire Blanc, a young French lad who, in my option, controls the vibrato, not going overboard. He is truly amazing, possibly even better than the great Clara Rockmore. He also does an amazing job with the Saw.
