Michaela Jill Murphy is an American voice, film, and stage actress. She is known as the voice of Toph Beifong in the animated Nickelodeon television series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". A prison on an island is just a little bit TOPHer to escape from. Especially if the water is boiling
The Avatar comics goes into more detail about Suki's imprisonment: Suki befriended another prisoner, Biyu, and began to make plans for a breakout by organizing a spirit of community in the prison population. Over two weeks, the pair was joined by Qing and many other prisoners, and cultivated dumpling-weed plants in a hidden garden accessed through a secret passage via the laundry room. Although the warden visited the laundry room for a surprise inspection, the prisoners remained loyal to Suki and Biyu, and did not betray them or the garden. The prisoners began to grow more willful thanks to the increased food rations.
There was a fight with the guards in the cafeteria after Suki slipped Qing a legume. The prisoners surrendered before being handcuffed and sent to solitary confinement. Growing worried after the fight in the cafeteria, Biyu betrayed Suki and the others by telling the warden about the garden. Biyu was rewarded with an elevated status, a higher quality uniform, better food, and a special cell. The warden brought Suki to his office and ordered her to be sent to solitary confinement for two weeks. After being released back into the general population, Suki confronted Biyu, only to be told that she valued her own comfort over putting herself at risk for the entire community. Suki returned to her cell in despair, before she received a vision of Avatar Kyoshi telling her that her friends loved her and had not abandoned her.

Chit Sang was voiced by Ezekial Rollins, and this was the only thing he ever done! The episode writer for Boiling Rock Part 1 is May Chan, who Admiral Chan and his son are named after. The thing to point out about the always-memed "That's rough, buddy" is it's...actually a genuine showing of empathy for someone who has basically zero modelling or experience of empathy. He doesn't know what's appropriate, or how big a response he should give, but he knows it needs acknowledgement and he does the best he can. And yeah, the Boiling Rock was based off Alcatraz, which was nicknamed the Rock. Sokka's plan to escape with the cooler to drift with the current with Zuko and Chit references a 1962 attempt by three Alcatraz inmates using a raft that would drift with the current.
I really like that Zuko's unspoken signature move is heating himself up in extreme cold, which of course he learned from Iroh. That it's all about being able to survive terrible situations, it's really thematic for him. This episode has one of my favorite little Zuko moments, when talking about their girlfriends, Sokka mentions "that gloomy girl who sighs a lot?" and Zuko just gets this involuntary goofy grin on his face like "yeah, that's my Mai". It just felt very organic, like, constantly brooding emo Zuko really does just love that knifey goth girl.
Having Mark Hamil would be awesome for the last episode but probably not possible. But imagine Mark AND Zach both come in for the last episode. Even more impossible but that’s what my brain wants😌
I love that Zuko finally has friends and the first thing we see him doing? Telling his friends about his uncle.
You could always go back to blue clothes and just say it's to represent Azula's blue fire if you run out of orange/red/yellow clothes lol

"That's rough buddy" still to this day being the best line in all of the show and the most meme worthy line is so poetic. If Book 3 gets adapted from Netflix I really hope that line is in there.😂

I feel like the reason why many prisons are located on islands surrounded by water is to make it harder for the prisoners to escape, as they first have to get out of the prison itself, and then get off the island.

The gang tenically wasn’t complete because we were missing Suki. Well I guess she wasn’t a member of the gang until episode 18 for when Sokka confirmed it.

The prison has cooler-piercing grappling hooks mounted to the outside walls even though this is a completely novel and unpredictable ocurrence.
I think famous maximum security prisons are often on islands to deter escape attempts.
I have to wonder what Suki felt when she realized Sokka didn't come to rescue her.
Alcatraz was known primarily for being difficult to break out of... mostly because it's an island. Some guys escaped once, they had to somehow build a raft while in prison without the guards noticing. And that's the only way anybody could realistically have escaped.
So that's why the "inescapable prison" is always surrounded by water. It doesn't make being in prison any worse, but it makes breaking out way harder.
Random fact: also many cemeteries were once located in islands at least in certain areas of the world (in the Stone Age?). And when they were not located in islands, they were in capes or very least closely associated with a body of water (lakes, ponds, seas, springs).
Nice seeing Zuko and Sokka bonding together on the balloon on the way to the prison. The prison itself definitely gives off that feel of it being made to keep in the most dangerous of criminals in, the fact the prison itself is surrounded in boiling water shows escape from the prison is almost impossible. Keyword though: ALMOST as shown in the next episode.
I'm going to wait to watch this till tomorrow so I can watch both parts back to back. I hate cliffhangers.

It's not so much that prisons surrounded by water are the worst punishment, it's more the simple fact they're that much harder to escape from. So of course you send your worst criminals there.

Great episode. It’s nice to see sokka try to atone for his mistakes from earlier in the season, as well as Zuko supporting him and trying to be like Iroh. It also probably has my favorite line in the whole series. (That’s rough, buddy) seeing Suki again is also great. Excited for part 2.
I’ve been looking forward to watching these!!! This is one of my favorite episodes in Book 3. I love watching you react especially since I rewatch the series all the time so I know what’s gonna happen. Zuko and Sokka together is exactly what we needed and the way these two interact with each other is awesome. You can feel their friendship grow, Zuko’s advice to Sokka, and his iconic, “That’s rough buddy.” That’s perfect.

Happy Valentine's day Michaela! I'm honestly not a big Valentine's Day person. Not just because I'm single but also I always found the whole thing really corny where couples are given a day to be romantic. Call me a bitter single Debbie Downer but that's just my take on it. Anyway, love the Boiling Rock episodes! Hakoda is one of my favorite side characters and he has one of the best lines of the entire series that's coming up! (Let me be clear I said "ONE OF!" "That's rough buddy" is of course iconic and among the best!)
One thing I never got.... isn't the cooler basically metal?... and metal in boiling water, well... it would pretty much make that metal scorching to the touch very quickly. How would they be able to sit in it?
The idea was that there was enough insulation between the person and the metal exterior I guess to keep the cold in. That being said, it feels like they glossed over a few steps in getting Chit Sang's friends, the disconnected cooler and the rest outside undetected lol.
Yeah Sokka's dad was the only one sent to The Boiling Rock because he was the leader just like Suki is the leader of The Kiyoshi Warriors

Q1: Prisons on islands make sense because any plan to escape requires a boat (Except in Harry Potter where they just teleport with magic)
Q2: Zuko knows all of the Fire Nation's battle plans, outpost locations, guard shift schedules, & where they keep spare uniforms. He planned to become the Fire Lord his whole life & The Fire Nation didn't think Zuko would succeed in joining the Avatar because as far as people loyal to the Avatar knows Zuko is the enemy
