Abandoned rocket test site hidden in the woods

  • Reaction Motors has an extensive history in U.S rocket building. (RMI) was an early American maker of liquid-fueled rocket engines, located in New Jersey. RMI built liquid fueled rocket engines for spy planes, experimental aircraft, missile systems, lunar lander's and other things. The engine in the plane Chuck Yeager used to break the sound barrier was built by RMI. They were really on the forefront in the 50's and 60's. RMI was taken over by a company called Thiokol Chemical in 1958, by the late 60's their military contracts were drying up. In 1972 the company closed up and the remaining work they were doing was moved out west. This test facility has been sitting abandoned for 45 years now. There are actually 3 test sites, the one I went to is the largest one. The other 2 are too close to an active military base and pretty much off limits

    Cool little fact about Reaction Motors and the pictures of the rocket engine tests you showed....They built the XLR99 engines that powered the X-15 rocket plane during the 60's. The test pilots flew that bird up to 4,520 MPH and over 300,000 feet high.(Scott Crossfield, Pete Knight, Joe Walker, etc ..... Neil Armstrong!)

      When my father worked there in the late 40s / early 50s they built the rocket motors for Bell X-1, Glamorous Glennis, first plane to break the sound barrier. Piloted by Chuck Yeager.

    On a sidenote you should invest on getting a Geiger counter. Just in case. You could never tell in old Places such as these

  • @vaprex
    @vaprex Před 6 lety +17

    It really sucks that there are so many idiots that think they need to spray paint the walls of places like these... I've never understood the mentality behind that.... These places would look far more beautiful (in that old, decrepit, dilapidated way) without the 'tagging'. /sigh... Maybe one day kids will realize vandalism is just plain stupid.

    • @CANControlGRAFFITI
      @CANControlGRAFFITI Před 5 lety +1

      vaprex what a stupid thing to be bothered by. The companies that leave all this waste should be held accountable for the clean up. All sorts of chemicals leaking into the soil and whatnot. They have left huge heaps of waste and then there’s ppl like you complaining about a bit of spraypaint. People go find places like these to paint as to not bother anyone and express themselves in way you do not understand and that’s fine. Places like these are where graffiti lives, deal with it. Also, no mention of the arson that took place.. seems a lot worse than some tags

    • @100GTAGUY
      @100GTAGUY Před 5 lety +2

      I don't care much for shitty graffiti such as cocks and swastikas, but you can find some quite creative art in these abandoned places if you look for it. Also I don't see how paint is considered vandalism considering its a protective barrier more so than smashing equipment and burning buildings. It's more unsightly at times than it is destructive tbh.

      @ds--pu1tv Před 2 lety

      @Refined Retro Reviews i don't see the problem tbh, like someone said at least it's not out in the public also someone definitely burnt that building down on purpose don't you think that along with all of the asbestos/toxic waste is more of a concern then a few swastikas and dick paintings? Graffiti (if taken seriously) can be a really neat thing and adds more of an "abandoned" feel to things imo.

    I'm pretty sure they were just testing the engines there, not the rockets. That wooden structure with the giant fan on top would have been a cooling tower. The water they would've used to cool the engines while testing would have gone there and sprayed all over the wooden slats and shelves and then the fan would've been to create air flow, sucking in from the bottom and the hot water would've evaporated up, into the cooler air above('cause heat rises, eh?)

    Something you already know, but if I was going to explore places like this, and any other questionable places, I'd have:
    special clothes and footwear, masks, hard hats, Geiger counters for radiation and the like, careful of lead based paints, mold, asbestos and other items, that can harm or kill you. Masks and gloves would be a must. For some reason, as people on this planet seem to have a use and dispose of attitude, many structures and objects are left behind and abandoned. We don't seem to want to demolish and scrap no longer wanted places or things. We kinda, in a round about way, do that to the elderly. When no longer useful, place them in special housing, till they die. All living things seem to do that. The strong will survive. The weak, fade away.
    Thanks. When you visit places like this place, do you check yourself at night, to see if you glow in the dark?

    Can't say it sounds smart to walk into a condemned radioactive and aspestos filled place..

    I live in the South. It is interesting to see KKK graffiti in what I assume is the NE. The shit is stupid no matter where it's written; just curious that it defies region.

    It's a nice location but i could really do without all the jump scares and stupid sounds, they make the video seem amateurish.

    Anyone else notice the kkk graffiti lol

      Abandoned places like this always attract racist/satanic graffiti, just the way it is.
