  • When it comes to ending your chronic pain or chronic symptoms, you can't force it. Instead, the best thing you can do is to balance your mind-body work by breaking it down into small digestible chunks with repetition and regularity. After that, get out there and live your life in alignment with the new knowledge you have about neural-circuit/mind-body symptoms.

Here are questions from the assessment I mention in the video:
    FUNCTIONAL:
    -Symptoms begin without physical injury
-Symptoms persist after an injury has healed (3-6 months or longer)
-Symptoms are in a distribution pattern that is symmetric (right/left symmetry)
-Symptoms occur on one whole side of the body or occur on half of the face, head, or torso
-Symptoms spread over time to different areas of the body
-Symptoms radiate to the opposite side of the body or down a whole leg or arm
-Symptoms that occur in many different body parts at the same time
-Symptoms that have a quality of tingling, electric, burning, numb, hot or cold
    INCONSISTENT:
-Symptoms shift from one location in the body to another
-Symptoms are more or less depending on the time of day.
-Symptoms occur after, but not during, an activity or exercise
-Symptoms occur or feel worse when you think about them or when someone asks about them.
-Symptoms occur when stresses increase or when you think about stressful situations
-Symptoms are minimal or nonexistent when engaged and joyful or distracting activities, such as being on vacation
-Symptoms are minimal or nonexistent after some kind of therapy, such as massage, chiropractic, Reiki, acupuncture, an herbal or vitamin supplement
    TRIGGERED:
-Symptoms are triggered by things that are not related to the actual symptoms, such as foods, smells, sounds, light, computer screens, menses, changes in the weather
-Symptoms are triggered by the anticipation of stress, such as prior to school, work, a doctor's visit, a medical test, a visit to a relative, or a social gathering; or during those activities
-Symptoms are triggered by simply imagining engaging in the triggering activity such as bending over, turning the neck, sitting or standing
-Symptoms are triggered by light touch or innocuous stimuli, such as the wind or cold, or simple movements

It's a common thing to do, and I'm glad to hear you're learning more helpful things now.

I am guilty of this. If I do to many videos or even to many somatic exercises I inadvertently turn on symptoms. A little goes a long way I am finding.

"a little goes a long way". I love it. That will make a good theme for a future video.

Christine, can you explain one problem I’m having. The chronic pain I have in my lower back and leg I believe I’m overcoming thanks to your help, but my leg still feels weak on occasion is this part of TMS? I’m becoming concerned about this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your concerned, which is fear in the brain, so it could be. It is not uncommon for a symptom to hang around or even get a new one. The body wants to hang on to something to distract you. Try working on the weakness. And of course if you are concerned get it checked out, it can't hurt to rule out and rule in mind body.

Hello, It's great to hear that you're noticing change in your symptoms. The brain is so good at mimicking symptoms. Feelings of weakness, tension, burning, fatigue, tingling, tickling, and itchiness are common TMS symptoms. You mentioned a good clue when you say the sensation of weakness is "on occasion". A true neurological problem would not act like that. I recall Dr Sarno saying in one of his books that he never met a patient that had true or permanent muscle weakness due to nerve damage from a disc problem (as we commonly hear is possible). Keep up your good work!

What i struggle with getting my head around is TMS moves around and can happen randomly from what i hear. I suffer from all over body stiffness and aches from head to foot with tingling and occasional numbness. If I get pain or symptoms its always from a movement where i can explain why a muscle went into spasm or aches after stretching too far so i am always in doubt whether it is TMS. Even though this body stiffness came on after a year of serious stress i find it hard to let go. Could my TMS at the core be the actual stiffness?

Hi, Thanks for your note. It raises a really good question that others may have as well. Does TMS wander around the body and act in a unpredictable way? Or can it be localized to one area and/or bother you all the time?
The answer is yes to both. TMS/neuroplastic symptoms can show up in many different ways.
The brain is very good at mimicking symptoms. That's why it can show up as sharp pain, dull pain, stiffness, fatigue, tingling, itching, burning.... It's also why it can show up functionally as in a too fast or too slow GI system, food sensitivities, and even mood problems.
Most likely, your brain became hypervigilant over time (particularly after a very stressful year) and it hasn't let its guard down yet.
Stick with the program. It's like untangling a very big knot, but little by little, you will make progress!
