- In 2019 we put together the Lazy Green Giant: a Win98 Pentium III computer with Voodoo 3 and Aureal Vortex 2 cards. Can't say I was ever 100% satisfied with it so it's time for a rebuild! Now with a SCSI2SD hard disk replacement, 360k floppy drive, and dual sound cards. AWE yeah.

Since making this video I've installed a SCSI extension, DVD-ROM, HDD indicator etc. _Check out the update video here!_

I had that case back in the day !! I still have it in the loft but i drilled out all the rivets and flatpacked it . Could not bring , myself to throw it out.
@BriPlaysRB Windows ME (Many Errors) is heresy!
@BriPlaysRB Windows 2000 was more like the Windows 98 interface on Windows XP. XP and 2000 were very similar under the hood, ME was more like 98 "Third Edition" and was a buggy nightmare.
LGR I’m trying to restore a Windows me pc but the graphics card died and I need help
Could you please link the Case? Im searching for a Case to put my Threadripper in.
The year is 2020. We have finally been able to afford a top of the line computer from 22 years ago
I wish that were true, the prices are going up again dangit
Thanks to videos like this all the new old stock is getting bought up and priced up. Should've made a 90s system back in 2013.
s8wc3 I live in Australia and prices for older pc’s have gone up in recent years thanks to Phil’s Computer Lab whenever he uploads a retro pc related video. I still wish to find a Compaq Deskpro EN with a Pentium 3 processor so I can slap a GeForce FX 5500 inside it as they are great retro pc graphics cards for running Windows 95/98 pc games from 1997-2002.
@@s8wc3 Why not emulate then?
@@Razee41 When you look up boring in the dictionary it says "see: emulation"

Speakers in my car doors are still connected with duct tape and hope, so I feel this comment.
I hear that it's a long way to temporary.
It endlessly tickles me that you upgrade components in long outdated hardware with newer... long outdated hardware. I love it.
This is poetry in some way lol
Me too :)
The sliding motherboard tray needs to be a thing again in today's times. It would be so convenient
3Dgameman "Unfortunately it does not come with a removable motherboard tray."
That case he used is just really awesome. If i had one i would definitely swap my rig into it.
I would love to have that
That is an awesome feature, wonder why it didn't catch on. I'd love to use this case for a modern system but don't think there would be enough cooling.
@@TranceHistorian That little intake and exhaust setup genuinely caught me off guard. I guess thermals really didn't matter as much for gaming setups back in those days?

"Ooo IRQs, I miss those" said no one ever.
Nice build!
"No! You may not interrupt my requests!" - LGR (probably)
Except for all those people who prefer good ol' PS/2 input devices with hardware IRQs, over the "modern" USB stuff with polling only.
@@GeckonCZ But the polling is so fast that it is not noticeable. The only thing that I can think of is in an old server room. KVM switches using PS/2 are still around because replacing them is pretty expensive. Besides, seeing that most servers are virtual anyway, there is little need for a keyboard, mouse and monitor except during setup of the host hardware. IDK for sure, I've setup virtual servers but never setup the host hardware.
@@GiSWiG Polling will never be as fast as hardware interrupt. But yeah, unless you actually measure it, the delay won't be noticeable at all in most situations. PS/2 keyboard will however be more reliable, the USB stack can and sometimes tends to crash, which will render your USB peripherals unusable. But that's only relevant in the server environment really. And even there it matters less and less, thanks to virtualization and other factors. Oh and then there is also the placebo effect :)

I cooked dinner specifically with the intention of eating it while watching this. This is the good life.
Mm dinner. Hope it was tasty!

"Nope, nope, what am I doing. Gotta install the I/O panel first."
I've built countless PCs and that's still me every damn time.
Now i know, iam not alone.
It amazes me that so few motherboards have pre-installed or integrated I/O covers. My new motherboard is actually the first I've used that has this feature lol
Hello, I'm John. And I keep forgetting to install the I/O panel first.
Guess I got lucky with my motherboard: it's integrated on the back.
I still haven't put mine on. I don't feel like taking out the mobo so I left it as is.

@Code Bunny Finally, someone that mentions it! Both this channel and science elf narrators have a very soothing voice. When I'm stressed I usually watch LGR and I feel better :D

His video's really do make for an easy and relaxing watch. Love watching his stuff just before bedtime, or in the background while working on stuff.
Forgetting to install the IO panel first is a mandatory, unskippable step to every PC build
I remember being excited to have a DVD player in my pc as a kid XD
Yeah, same here.. I was beyond excited to have the ability to burn CD's, lol..Sounds bad, but that's how I got gas money. People would give me a list of 12-15 songs they wanted and I would scour Limewire for them, download them, burn them and sell them the CD for $5, haha 😄..$5 would go a long way. It's crazy looking back and thinking about all that stuff..
Same
and watching movies!!!!
Yeah nowadays I'm let down when I find the case I ordered doesn't support them lol. Hopefully I can work up the money to swap the case.
Smart man. Too bad Spotify exists, or you could make a decent small business selling customized mixtapes! And in a big city you might still be able to run it.
This is the era I did most of my computer tinkering, so this is straight up my jam.
I lusted after one of these cases but could never afford one.
yeah... a p2 was my second computer ever.. p2 300mhz with an ati rage pro and some cheapo terratec soundcard, which both eventually got replaced by a 16mb voodoo banshee and the first soundblaster live and upgraded with a creative dvd encore kit... aaah, the good old days
+1 to that :D --A child of the 90s
A 1ghz coppermine P3 was my first "all new everything" build. I built plenty before that of everything I could find used (Amd k2 & k3s, P1 166 oc to 250 stable, 486 with overdrive, horribly unreliable 386). C64 was my first computer. A buddy had a computer shop & let me root through all the used stuff, & I did it right & bought all my new stuff from him too.
Dang, that aluminum case is no joke. Looks slick even by today's standards.

I wish modern cases had a slide out mobo tray like that.
There are cases that have removable mobo trays, some even designed to be usable outside the case as a little bench PC "holder," but many cases with these kinds of features cost a few hundred dollars U.S. They probably cost a lot back then too.
Overall I think there are much nicer case designs these days than back then. Everything is modular and screwdriverless these days, and made out of better materials than thin stamped aluminum.
@@HappyBeezerStudios Buy whatever panel material you want. There was not a single feature nor material offered decade(s) ago that isn't still offered, and many new options now exist. You want cheap stamped aluminum with holes in it? You can still get it. But you can also get much nicer filtered airflow with fans so large and quiet they'd blow the minds of PC builders from the turn of the century.
@@delphicdescant just FYI, this wasn't cheap stamped aluminum. everything was cut out of heavy sheet stock. this case was like $300 back in 2003.
I actually love that removable motherboard tray I guess you'd call it. Very convenient for building, I'd honestly like to see that more mainstream.
That old-stock Lian Li is so damn nice.
That company has made some amazing cases over the years. My Xbox 360 case is one they made and helps prevent RROD thanks to the aluminum.
I concur. It`s an awesome case. I want one !!
And the motherboard tray is removable.
Somewhere in the world 3D Game man is happy.
nice all it needs a classic "designed for windows 98" sticker and a pentium 3 sticker lol
really awesome dude. thats perfect.
The PC-60 was the first case I bought and wasn't a hand-me-down. I loved the motherboard tray, and bought the official window side panel for it. The whole thing was so nice to work on.

Wow, I kinda legit want that case for a modern build.
Or a case that requires a physical key to power it on!
@@TerryTateOfficeLinebacker760 That will be super-cool!
No dust filters. Not in a lifetime!
@@TerryTateOfficeLinebacker760 Look up "Key Switches" or "Keylock Switch" and you should find exactly what you want, just get a 2-pole switch for the 2 wires on your normal microswitch and wire that in place. Obviously would require retrofitting to a case but drilling a hole is pretty simple. There are modern cases with key interlocks but it's virtually only found in business/enterprise.
Mine has dust filters and is a older model. I have a 1060/8700 build in it love the look. Just wish mine had usb 2.0 like his mine is usb 1.1

This is MEGA AWESOME! I remember what it was trying to have two sound cards or video cards together in a Windows 98 PC. It was a pain! IRQs conflicts, drivers conflicts, BSODs, etc. It was really difficult. All my life I wanted to have two great sound cards together in a system like this "Megaluminum Monster", so: THANK YOU LGR FOR MAKING IT A REALITY and I can enjoy it watching this great videos!
I've had that same Lian Li case for the last 8 or 9 years; it's awesome! It's still the home for my first Quad build (Q6600). Started with XP MCE on it and now has a 3 year old version of 10, though doesn't get used much anymore. Was never crazy about being confined to 80mm fans in the back, but overall it's been a very durable case that stands up to a fair amount of abuse. It's had other computers stacked on it for a few years, it's been moved around countless times, and short of a few scratches it's still rock solid. Good move! Great channel too! I found you about 2 weeks ago and have been watching your videos. Great work and thank you!
16:01 = Clint's Owen Wilson impression.. Spot-On.
That is one seriously awesome case! The aesthetics are great, and it just looks so pleasant to build in!
Hello, LGR. thank you for encouraging me to get into pc restorations with your amazing content. keep it up man!
Around 2002 I had bought a Philips 5.1 sound card and have convinced myself that someday I would find a use for it along with numerous other computer components such as dual Pentium III tualatin motherboards with Rambus I'll never use ....so maybe before I drop dead I should ship all this stuff to lgr
When you polish off the old case, please do it on video. Seeing a gunky tower turn to a fresh, bare case again sounds like great oddly satisfying material!
Clint I have watched your channel for 10 years and I love it. It always makes me happy when I am feeling down. Thank you.
LOVE THIS!!! LOVE THIS!!! I am in geek heaven!!!! Thanks LGR!!!! And happy 2020!
To this day, I still think Canyon.mid sounds like it could be opening theme music for a local TV newscast.
A day after finding a copy of Duke 3D at Goodwill, I see a new LGR video!
Could it be a sign?
Prot-tip: Goodwill trains their employees in the back to never put out high value items on the shelves. They instead send anything they deem as valuable to their website for auction. Go check their website to see all the things they won't let you get your hands on. New phones, newer laptops, tons of great stuff is withheld from us. Instead, go support Salvation Army and other thrift stores that put all the cool stuff out on the shelves for us to find.
@@adultlunchables I know of the online ShopGoodwill store, have scored some nice stuff on there. Unfortunately Goodwill holds a monopoly on the thrift store business in my particular area.

@@draxoronxztgs1212 Tweaking your MS-DOS config files wasn't a thing anymore during the P3 era; that was all bug & pray in Windows :)
@@Dawwwg Yes, but it was still necessary to manage in Windows and BIOS if intalling the drivers didn't worked due to IRQ collisions. Some controller cards have their required IRQ and DMA settings to work at all that can not be changed. The Plug'and'Pray feature wasn't called that because it always worked as intended.
Miss the Windows 98 days. Thanks for keeping it alive for everyone.
I love that motherboard tray. It's like a test bench you can pull out whenever you want.
If at all possible guys, resist the urge to paint computers. It might look good for a short period of time but you'll regret it later on as it starts to look crappy. I suggest getting it professionally painted at a shop that has the proper equipment instead.
agreed and since that one is aluminum you could electropaint it meaning a perfectly even coat
I think its because he used plastidip more than anything else
The main issue is going to be the starting point. If you're starting on bare metal it'll probably look fine; if you're spraying over existing paint, especially if it is an orange peel type, then it'll probably suck.
@libnny gutierrez Agreed, preparation is everything when it comes to painting!
