I expected more from Herdman overall and in particular with the substitution and re-arranging the midfield once we lost the ball after the first 20-25 minutes. You could see Croatia gaining steam, and keeping the ball away from Canada. In his defence, Eustaquio went down injured before half time an it may have caused Herdman to alter his substitution plans, but overall, I agree that Hutchinson, with all due respect to him and his decades of service to this shirt, needed to come out. 3. The whole "Croatia smelled blood in the water" comment reminds me of a great Bielsa quote. Argentina was playing away at Colombia for the 2002 Qualifiers, and Bielsa walks into the change room and says to his players; " In street fights there are two kinds of fighters . From I Croatian side, the plan how to beat Canada was always clear. If you survive their dangerous attack and get past the high pressing you have the widest line to the goal in the WC. Canada doesn't play much defense like Marocco. Our coach put 2 strikers in which he rearly does, and they scored 3 goals. Canada had a chanse to go 2 0 which would mentally destroy our team, since that didn't happen, it was just about being patient, passing the ball forward and executing. Still I think Canada can beat Marocco if they play a bit more patient, with such talented players they can be dangerous in the next WC.
When I heard Canada's coach, about effing Croatia, I suspected this could happen. Now he will be remembered as a đ€Ą. More so, based on a supposed good performance, although a losing one, against a washed up Belgium side which for some reason was still highly rated. In football you never disrespect your opponent, specially when your opponent is miles above your level. Croatia are still a top quality side: it was great to see KovaciÄ driving forward. DaliÄ seems to have done a good job transitioning in some of the younger talents like Gvardiol and Sosa whilst utilising the experience of players who can still do a job. Canada should just look at this tournament as a step towards 2026. Tremendous job to get to Qatar, played well against Belgium, one or two big talents, and they will learn from this tournament experience.

The problem started with Canada having to go full tilt against Belgium and chasing a game that they should have been leading. Canada ran out of gas after 25 mins against Croatia. Hutchinson starting two games 4 days apart was just too much for him. Estaquio was banged up and had to be subbed at half time as well.

After the 1st goal, I think Canada should have defended more. Just like how they beat USA/Mexico was just getting them on the counter. Croatia is a much better team but still I think Canada just overestimated their opponent.
Canada just lacked adjustment in game plan. You score first in a must win tournament, you have to adjust... Canada continued with the plan of pushing to score like they were behind. As a Canadian I'm proud of us, but also I agree - Hutchinson should have been used as a sub not started. Additionally, we needed to run a midfield 3 to compete with the excellent Croatian midfield. I even would have been happy with parking the bus after the goal and absorbing pressure. We fell apart.

I happen to agree with him. Croatia played a brilliant game by attacking Canada's weaknesses. Only way to beat Canada is to counter with speed up the middle. If Croatia was that good....why did they draw against Morocco with only 2 shots on target and 65% possession. Soccer isn't about quality of players...it's about strategy and tactics and being able to adapt mid-game. Perfect example Saudi Arabia vs. Argentina.

They also implement a high press quite often. Although I have never been a fan of this strategy as we do not have the players we need in midfield to support this. I expected more from Herdman overall and in particular with the substitution and re-arranging the midfield once we lost the ball after the first 20-25 minutes. You could see Croatia gaining steam, and keeping the ball away from Canada. In his defence, Eustaquio went down injured before half time an it may have caused Herdman to alter his substitution plans, but overall, I agree that Hutchinson, with all due respect to him and his decades of service to this shirt, needed to come out.

Canada doesn't play much defense like Marocco. Our coach put 2 strikers in which he rearly does, and they scored 3 goals.
Canada had a chanse to go 2 0 which would mentally destroy our team, since that didn't happen, it was just about being patient, passing the ball forward and executing.
Still I think Canada can beat Marocco if they play a bit more patient, with such talented players they can be dangerous in the next WC.

Croatia are still a top quality side: it was great to see KovaciÄ driving forward. DaliÄ seems to have done a good job transitioning in some of the younger talents like Gvardiol and Sosa whilst utilising the experience of players who can still do a job. Canada should just look at this tournament as a step towards 2026. Tremendous job to get to Qatar, played well against Belgium, one or two big talents, and they will learn from this tournament experience.

The problem started with Canada having to go full tilt against Belgium and chasing a game that they should have been leading. Canada ran out of gas after 25 mins against Croatia. Hutchinson starting two games 4 days apart was just too much for him. Estaquio was banged up and had to be subbed at half time as well.
What went wroong for Canada? Croatia showed up in what Croatia does best. Play masterful soccer! No one does it better.

As a Canadian I'm proud of us, but also I agree - Hutchinson should have been used as a sub not started. Additionally, we needed to run a midfield 3 to compete with the excellent Croatian midfield. I even would have been happy with parking the bus after the goal and absorbing pressure. We fell apart.

I happen to agree with him. Croatia played a brilliant game by attacking Canada's weaknesses. Only way to beat Canada is to counter with speed up the middle. If Croatia was that good....why did they draw against Morocco with only 2 shots on target and 65% possession. Soccer isn't about quality of players...it's about strategy and tactics and being able to adapt mid-game. Perfect example Saudi Arabia vs. Argentina.
