I'm not really in the market for a dedicated field radio right now but if I were I think this would be the one I would get. This radio was clearly designed by engineers who understand what a field radio should be. Other field/portable radio designs seem to be driven more by sales and marketing data and/or lack the mechanical design elements that are needed to survive harsh use. Thanks for the great review. This radio was a very close second to the IC705 and almost won out in the end. The V/U and GPS is what finally pushed me to buy a 705. But MAN the form function of the lab599 is AMAZING and yes I agree with your comment on “proprietary connections” the reason the military has used them so long is they are “Army proof” lol

Seems to be an awesome field radio. This comment is for Lab599, great start, if you make anymore add-on units please consider a broad range ATU, all military manpacks radios that I have used have one and it makes using digital modes like ALE possible plus for your next model please a single cable for digital modes. I really like the idea of extra modules. Rather than connections just for power on the back panel, if they had RF in/out, data/CAT and power they could sell an ATU module, Computer/GPS module (Raspberry pi in an aluminum case with composite insert for WIFI and GPS signals) as well as the battery module. I think Elecraft KX2 and KX3 sales would stop over night. I can but dream. ;-)

Just found out about this radio in an ad on FB. I have a K1, a KX2, and a KX3 always looking for a small field rig. No mention of an ATU, for a field rig, that is a must for me as I like to throw a 28’ wire in a tree, lay out an 18’ counterpoise and band hop my way around. I also have a T1 for my MTR, so I could make that work. Looks like only a single CW key or paddle, that would be a pain, but doable (you can run two on the KX2 and KX3, I’m pretty much cw only so this is important to me). I like the screen, readability in the sunlight is super important. The panadapter looks very useful, something that is a benefit if you are in the field, away from a cell signal and can’t chimp with RBN. Guess I will be doing some more searching on this rig. Very nice radio I really like the ruggedness of it and the weather proofing of it! I would prefer it to have an internal battery that is USB Rechargeable and replaceable. As I already have my 705 I will pass for now but will keep this radio as a possible backup option (second backup radio). Thank you for the video 73
I think that's a nice idea. All these years my backup radio has been the Yaesu ft-817nd. Now it's going to be this radio, as soon as I can get my hands on it again. My 705 arrives on Monday. Really interested to see what that's all about.
I have been very interested in this radio since first seeing it on IG last year. Your test has confirmed many of my hopes for it. I do not claim it is perfect but it looks almost like it was built for me. BTW I LOVE the cable hookups and believe they are the way of the future for radio manufactures. Love it's ruggedness.

Thanks for this comment. Yes it is a very interesting radio. It is the only rugged ham radio on the market oh, and the first-of-its-kind. Traditionally ham radio operators wanting rugged features, have gone over to Green radios which tend to be larger and heavier. This rig is pretty amazing with its all-aluminium body, no fan, it's pretty incredible features for its size and ruggedness. I'm waiting for my production model to get here. Understood. Also consider, the 817 is an excellent backup rig. I won't be selling mine and even have some projects incoming for the Channel with this radio.
Looks like it is 1 accessory away from being the perfect mobile radio in the car. That accessory being a mounting bracket with a quick detach set up so you can grab and go or to secure the radio from prying eyes and sticky fingers.
I love my TX-500: super durable, simple menu, low rx current draw. I use the DigiRig Mobile as my digital interface and the Elecraft T1 tuner (when required). The only weird thing is the internal CW keyer setting is in characters per minute, not words per minute. I'm in the market for the 60 watt DIY PA500 amp, but the wait time is about a year.
As other have said, great review. This really looks like an IC-705 killer, especially for those who prefer to do their vhf/uhf work on a different radio. Also looks like it could be a KX2/KX3 killer....as those radios appear to be fantastic portable rigs, but look oh so fragile....and the idea of bouncing one of them off the rocks while out doing POTA or SOTA...as it drops out of your hand...has never appealed to me.
I'm not sure about the IC 705, it serves a different purpose. I really love elecraft KXx performance, but they would never survive in the field at this latitude. That's why I never bought one. Thanks for another video on the TX-500. I have one on pre-order and am very excited! I hadn't heard the term "green radio" in the amateur context, but I have used military radios (US Army SINCGARS among others) and those things are dependable and indestructible. If this has the same feel and utility to it, I'm sold! And thanks for giving a sneak preview of the data port. I've already sourced some GX12 connectors and built an RJ-45 cable for a SignaLink, but if the TX-500's VOX works well, that's one less box I need to carry into the field. It’s now September 2021 and this radio is still unobtanium… I think the IC-705 eclipsed this radio BIG TIME. I’m still getting a song and dance when contacting US dealers when attempting to purchase one…
Didn't I see this radio a couple of years ago? It was supposed to have a debut date that never happened. I remember searching the internet for it, but just came up with notes of interest and other fodder. Well, I'm glad to see it on the market now.

Change is sometimes difficult for people to apprehend when fixated on a certain name brand and are reluctant to try or even understand something new; like the connection's on this fabulous new radio.
Excellent review Julian. I've been having great fun out portable this year with my KX3 (with the battery pack you designed) but, you are right, it doesn't 'feel' very rugged. The Genesun 10A MPPT charge controller is great -- but it was expensive. Hi Bruce. I haven't found a quiet charge controller at a good price yet. The good news is there is Genasun.eu now. The prices might be a little cheaper than they were ordering directly from the UK or USA.
I've never been happy with my kx3. Disappointed with the screen, so 2005. Sure isn't very rugged, carry it in a waterproof plastic case. No onboard charger, I worry im going to break the flimsy speaker wires removing it to charge. Menu's are ridiculous. Buy the time its packaged to go out its the size of a prc-77. Maybe this is its replacement? I do wish it had a stackable amp, tuner and battery like the prc-351. Interested in the battery specs when it comes out.

Great review! You really have a great skill for teaching and communicating! I first saw this radio on a twitter feed and thought it was bogus and a hoax. Then I did some digging and thought maybe it is legit, then I saw you in another video and saw the tx 500 and thought... wow! It isn't a hoax! Thank you for the review and, I've held off for the icom 705 because of the price and the features but this radio is... maybe?... what I am looking for in a prepper sense.

Are you the same Max from Instagram? Yeah perhaps we are cut from the same cloth. I was heartbroken when Yaesu discontinued the 897 and didn't replace it with anyting. 7200 is also another great rig. Now this one has definitely secured its place in ham radio culture. I have the 705 here now, and I will purchase this radio for myself when it's available in EU.
Looks like a great radio. And at 100 mA receive, that's fantastic. I believe I noticed a whip antenna built into the soon to be released battery back, Even without one, it is quite the xcvr.
Fair enough but it was really hard to contain my passion and excitement for this magnificent radio. This is the first time a portable ham radio was produced, which wasn't intended for only operating in the beautiful weather of the Southwest United States.

Julian, thank you for this review. My only remaining concern with this transceiver is that there is no warranty listed for it; not in the manual, not on the Lab599 website, and not on the US HRO web page for it. Sure, there will be a repair or repair forwarding facility in Reno, NV. But is there a documented warranty, and what are its terms and conditions?
Following up on the warranty question, here is what US HRO indicated this morning by email: "1 years parts and labor, it will be added to the website shortly."
Julian. Very nice video about the TX-500 which I've also been keeping an eye on. However, the 'green radio connectors' are nothing such. Not according to the manpacks I've used and owned (PRC104 etc). The common military (NATO) transceiver connector standard is called 'U-229' and it's commonly a 5-pin connector with a 6-pin subtype. These are extremely rugged connectors without 'gender' in the sense that pins 'mate' pin-to-pin, not pin-to-female receptacle. At least this is the case with all communications and crypto equipment I've been issued or been in touch with otherwise. The connectors used on the TX-500 are totally different but might work very well - as long as they're not filled with mud which is the strong selling point of the U-229. I'm an ex military diver and we handled our stuff pretty badly. Still worked though, although we were issued toothbrushes to keep our U-229's free of grit and grime. Looks excellent and definitely checks all the boxes for my needs and then some. The only hang up for me is it's an unknown company. Up until the TX-500 I never heard of this company so it's a little bit of risk for me to put up the money just yet as promising as it is. I will be watching closely though and hope they are successful.
Thanks for mentioning being disappointed with the 818 - I like Yaesu but when their "new" qrp rig came out I found the results much like waiting for a root canal senile dentist.
I'm just starting to get into the radio scene. I've held some of the handheld radios in my hand at the various shops and all of them feel like if I just put it in my emergency bag, they'd probably break. This definitely looks like it will hand being taken all over the place in my truck.
I'm actually more excited for this than the IC-705. For my the price of the 705 was a deal breaker. I'm a college student and don't have a ton of money to throw around on radios, I would like it but I ultimately have to be very careful. While this is quite a bit more than my G90, I wouldn't call it outrageous. The lack of an internal tuner for me is a non issue since my primary antenna is a F-loop 2.0. However do want to find something more portable, since loops can be a challenge. I treat my G90 more like a small base radio than an actual portable radio. Which is fine, its a very capable radio. But I personally would hesitate to call it truly portable. In context of a large 100w base radio, then yes it is portable. I could really see the utility of having one of these around as a compliment, not a replacement of my G90. So all bases are covered in regards to base operations and portable ops. We've seen with this pandemic its entirely possible to be in a situation where you have to "bug in" and can't go anywhere, so having base capacity is important as well. But then on the field side this seems much easier to quickly put together a kit around this radio and move quickly. I would defiantly like to get my hands on one. And I agree on the easy to deploy antennas over stringing long wires in trees, I want to have something that's easy to deploy and setup. Not be fumbling around trying to get into a tree. Then if you have to leave the antenna should be easy to pack up for you to move to a new location or just go back home. I never have been a big fan of long wires, I get their utility, but they seem far too cumbersome to actually be practical. Additionally you could be in a situation where you don't have a bunch of trees around you so you can't string up the antenna. What do you do then? Not knocking the people who use them, its just not really for me. We have this image with survival field ops that its just going to be running into the woods, setting up camp and stringing up an antenna. For some, yes. However, there's also the people who are in urban or suburban environments who might not have that option or its completely impractical for them to do. They could have situation where they have to leave their house and their only option will to be taking over and securing an abandoned building and setting up communications from that base. But still having the possibility of needing to leave quickly and find a new base. Not idea conditions, but its still a possibility which must me considered. Harder to simulate, since you can't just storm into a building and setup camp in a corner somewhere. But it should not be dismissed in the slightest. And because of that I don't think long wires necessarily are going to be the most practical in all circumstances. Biggest thing is know your area and think practically what will be the most practical under different conditions and build around that. Thank you for making this video! I am very hopeful about those connectors on the back, would be very nice if they can do more than just transfer battery pack info, imagine if Lab599 produce an empty add on case and provide the communication protocol for those connectors, it would potentially be possible to tailor it to exactly meet specific needs.
I've been waiting for this video. I want to see the difference between this and the 705. The TX-500 feels like the IC7200 just more rugged and minus the audio interface. (If anyone says the 7200 isn't rugged, mine still works after accidentally running it over in the dark). The possibility of taking these to from the car to the field is really appealing. Antennas still trip me up though. I think I just need set them all up and figure out what works for me.
The sotabeams linked dipole is a good performer, but it has a couple of deployment downsides. Wire tangles and getting the apex high enough. Some deploy with a telescopic mast which is heavy and cumbersome for 30, 40, 80m. Others launch into a tree, if there is that option.
I agree with your views on the Lab599, but I'm at a crossroads on continuing with ham radio pursuits. I detest contests and rag chewing, but enjoy field work. It's my conundrum to solve.
Julian, your content is top-notch! I now have another reason to divert funds from a pizza that I really don't need (trust me on this one) to something significantly more useful! I should be able to make this a reality by early 2021. --side note... have you ever experimented with 'FreeDV'? Thanks so much for the review, I've been back and forth between this and the 705. I normally use for hiking, and base camping. I already have a 7100, so that covers base camping and vehicle ops. One question about the TX-500 that I did not find confirmed in the manual, or limited reviews. The specs show an FM deck, which would be handy for 10 and 6. Does this have Tone encode, or is it as the manual implies only 1000Hz? There may be a day again, when sunspots return, propagation becomes magic and world wide FM 10m repeater contacts are possible. Assuming it works the same as most other radios, an amp would definitely work. Just need to wire an interface cable for it to do PTT (grounding pins 1 and 2 on what looks like the 7-pin port).
I received mine yesterday from HRO in U.S.. Yea, only 50 in the US and being a big fan of QRP and love my KX3...I was looking for something more rugged to take along those misty and dusty QRP ventures. BUT, I might have a PROBLEM. There is a loose metallic object inside the radio and that spells a big no-no to NOT apply power. I am stuck wondering what to do now. Which brings me to the number one issue with this radio, there is NO way to contact Lab599 for any questions or issue resolution. I have followed their Instagram all this year and as many other followers I too have posted questions and they are not answered. You can see the frustration from his followers. . If there is going to be any down fall and acceptance to this radio it will be the ZERO ability to communicate with Lab599. I have a problem with a brand new radio and no one to contact. Not a good situation. PS: as usual an outstanding presentation, thank you. UPDATE: ======= Found the source of the metallic sound inside the TX-500. I took the radio apart and there was a loose screw. It appears to be one of the same screws that hold the mother board down. None of those are missing so I assume it was one that fell in during the assembly. This would had been a disaster if I had not heard the rattle. This would had surely shorted the radio and ruined it.

Looks like a great option for field use. Going to be interested in seeing the apples to apples field experience of the 705 vs. this one. The 705 has some nice extras ( which I would use but I can buy a 500 + the new ID-52 HT for the same price as a 705 so interested in the better value) but if you don't need them, the 500 looks like the way to go. How waterproof is this radio as well as the speaker/microphone? I don't see an IP (intrusion protection) rating on their website. Also, have you considered replacing the speaker/mic with one of the military type handset units? How hard would that be, does the impedance match, etc.?
No IP rating yet, so no speculation from me. I did operate in the rain on the last day of this trip with no issues. I thought about dunking it in a bucket, but didn't want to test to total failure. The mil headset is a good idea. The PTT between the rig and headset could manage impedance but I'm not sure.
We made reflective vests for the dogs. You're right though, incredibly difficult to see in the snow. I had to give the radio back by the way oh, it was just a loaner. I look forward to having my own in a couple of months.
Thank you for this video! I'm try to decide if I want to buy this radio or the G90. I like the G90's internal tuner and more power, but the design and quality of the tx500 appears to blow away the the G90. In your opinion, is the tx500 worth the extra money over the G90?
It all starts with your requirements, and type of operating you'd like to do. I think of the G90 as a 20 watt replacement for a FT-891 or FT-857. Lighter and easier to carry in the field. The TX500 is like a more rugged Elecraft KX2 or KX3. Someone would choose a TX-500 over them because they want/need a lightweight more durable radio option than the other options available. It's a hard choice for certain.

In other words, I ordered nearly the exact setup you ran. I am very excited. One additional question, did you need to do anything extra to the power cable of the tx-500 to power it with the light saver? Apparently the HRO stock has shipped from mother russia. They will be here soon! I pre-ordered one based upon your review Julian but I was wondering how much homebrewing I'll need to do with their proprietary (ok better word...different) power connections and attaching Anderson PPs so I can easily run a LiFPO battery. Simple chop and crimp job??
:-) It's easy as cake and if I remember correctly, they include the connector for you. It's just two wires eg red and black plus and minus. I terminated the cable they included with powerpoles. I'm really excited to get the production model here. It's going to be magnificent.
Everyone asks that question and I suppose it's valid. I did some very serious weak signal work with this radio, and I was extremely satisfied with it. Even more so than my ft-891. The thing people aren't asking or at least not the elecraft owners, is would you take an elecraft kx2 or kx3 two places where you need a rugged radio? If the answer is yes, you would definitely take this over the KX series. The thing is, the only thing the KX series does well, is receiver performance. It's definitely the most important aspect, but it doesn't make a total field radio. I had a blast using this one well it was snowing in Lapland :-) perhaps elecraft will make a rugged version.
I used the lightsaver Max, but I also used a small DIY lithium iron phosphate pack I built. I have a video of that build coming out in a couple of weeks.
whats the audio comparison like as the lab599 has the audio coming from mic and my concern is that when audio comes through mic its normally terrible and thanks for the video

Great reviews and I really enjoy the field operations focus of your videos. As a less experienced operator I have been focused on 2m/ 70cm and am curious why many of these field radios do not include those bands. Is it a technical issue with adding different innards or is it a marketing/ user issue where more experienced hams prefer to run a different radio for those bands because of limited range? Or is it just that Discovery is targeting a certain niche with a solid proof of concept and will look to expand? I would think that a “do it all” unit that included 2m/ 70cm would make this a no-brainer vs the FT818.
Well we have to do it all radios. The I see 705 and the Yaesu ft-818. The thing is oh, many of us like doing HF Communications while backpacking, Mountaineering, or camping off grid in the backcountry. With those type of activities are usually out of the range of a 2m 70 centimeter radio, and instead carry an additional handling like a Yaesu ft 60 ft 70, th74, ic5100, ... there are even times I don't even carry a VHF UHF radio because I'm simply camping so far away. Now just to play Devil's Advocate, if I were doing satellite comes from the back country, and all-in-one radio like the 705 , ft-818, ic9700 makes more sense. 73 Julian oh8stn

Not that it would matter too much out in the field and/or on HF really but I (or someone) should research how good the frequency stability is on it. I imagine with the amount of heatsinking that the exterior offers it'd be pretty good but you never know.

Sorry Dale I don't remember. I don't think I tested that functionality. It goes up to 56 megahertz so it would be silly for it not to work with repeaters. Let me know if you find out though please. It'll be a month or two before my tx500 is here

I'm not really in the market for a dedicated field radio right now but if I were I think this would be the one I would get. This radio was clearly designed by engineers who understand what a field radio should be. Other field/portable radio designs seem to be driven more by sales and marketing data and/or lack the mechanical design elements that are needed to survive harsh use. Thanks for taking the time to put together this excellent review.

Thanks for the great review. This radio was a very close second to the IC705 and almost won out in the end. The V/U and GPS is what finally pushed me to buy a 705. But MAN the form function of the lab599 is AMAZING and yes I agree with your comment on “proprietary connections” the reason the military has used them so long is they are “Army proof” lol

Seems to be an awesome field radio. This comment is for Lab599, great start, if you make anymore add-on units please consider a broad range ATU, all military manpacks radios that I have used have one and it makes using digital modes like ALE possible plus for your next model please a single cable for digital modes. If you added these features it would be hands down the best portable field radio. Cheers Lance VK6LMK
I really like the idea of extra modules. Rather than connections just for power on the back panel, if they had RF in/out, data/CAT and power they could sell an ATU module, Computer/GPS module (Raspberry pi in an aluminum case with composite insert for WIFI and GPS signals) as well as the battery module. I think Elecraft KX2 and KX3 sales would stop over night. I can but dream. ;-)

Just found out about this radio in an ad on FB. I have a K1, a KX2, and a KX3 always looking for a small field rig. No mention of an ATU, for a field rig, that is a must for me as I like to throw a 28’ wire in a tree, lay out an 18’ counterpoise and band hop my way around. I also have a T1 for my MTR, so I could make that work. Looks like only a single CW key or paddle, that would be a pain, but doable (you can run two on the KX2 and KX3, I’m pretty much cw only so this is important to me).
I like the screen, readability in the sunlight is super important. The panadapter looks very useful, something that is a benefit if you are in the field, away from a cell signal and can’t chimp with RBN.
Guess I will be doing some more searching on this rig.

Very nice radio I really like the ruggedness of it and the weather proofing of it! I would prefer it to have an internal battery that is USB Rechargeable and replaceable. As I already have my 705 I will pass for now but will keep this radio as a possible backup option (second backup radio). Thank you for the video 73
I think that's a nice idea. All these years my backup radio has been the Yaesu ft-817nd. Now it's going to be this radio, as soon as I can get my hands on it again. My 705 arrives on Monday. Really interested to see what that's all about.
I have been very interested in this radio since first seeing it on IG last year. Your test has confirmed many of my hopes for it. I do not claim it is perfect but it looks almost like it was built for me. BTW I LOVE the cable hookups and believe they are the way of the future for radio manufactures. Love it's ruggedness.

Fascinating. I have watched this several times now, and I'm completely intrigued with it. The resilience to environmental factors is very appealing. Thanks for this comment. Yes it is a very interesting radio. It is the only rugged ham radio on the market oh, and the first-of-its-kind. Traditionally ham radio operators wanting rugged features, have gone over to Green radios which tend to be larger and heavier. This rig is pretty amazing with its all-aluminium body, no fan, it's pretty incredible features for its size and ruggedness. I'm waiting for my production model to get here. Also consider, the 817 is an excellent backup rig. I won't be selling mine and even have some projects incoming for the Channel with this radio.
Looks like it is 1 accessory away from being the perfect mobile radio in the car. That accessory being a mounting bracket with a quick detach set up so you can grab and go or to secure the radio from prying eyes and sticky fingers.
I love my TX-500: super durable, simple menu, low rx current draw. I use the DigiRig Mobile as my digital interface and the Elecraft T1 tuner (when required). The only weird thing is the internal CW keyer setting is in characters per minute, not words per minute. I'm in the market for the 60 watt DIY PA500 amp, but the wait time is about a year.
As other have said, great review. This really looks like an IC-705 killer, especially for those who prefer to do their vhf/uhf work on a different radio. Also looks like it could be a KX2/KX3 killer....as those radios appear to be fantastic portable rigs, but look oh so fragile....and the idea of bouncing one of them off the rocks while out doing POTA or SOTA...as it drops out of your hand...has never appealed to me.
I'm not sure about the IC 705, it serves a different purpose. I really love elecraft KXx performance, but they would never survive in the field at this latitude. That's why I never bought one. My dream is companies like Yaesu and elecraft start making field-ready versions of their rigs in the future. Thanks for the comment and kindness. It's very much appreciated.

I hadn't heard the term "green radio" in the amateur context, but I have used military radios (US Army SINCGARS among others) and those things are dependable and indestructible. If this has the same feel and utility to it, I'm sold!
And thanks for giving a sneak preview of the data port. I've already sourced some GX12 connectors and built an RJ-45 cable for a SignaLink, but if the TX-500's VOX works well, that's one less box I need to carry into the field. Looking forward to your sound card cable build video!

I didn't have a tx500 for WFD, so I used my 705
It’s now September 2021 and this radio is still unobtanium… I think the IC-705 eclipsed this radio BIG TIME. I’m still getting a song and dance when contacting US dealers when attempting to purchase one…
Didn't I see this radio a couple of years ago? It was supposed to have a debut date that never happened. I remember searching the internet for it, but just came up with notes of interest and other fodder. Well, I'm glad to see it on the market now.

I've been having great fun out portable this year with my KX3 (with the battery pack you designed) but, you are right, it doesn't 'feel' very rugged. Its cosseted in its own waterproof case -- but that's hardly a lightweight solution.
As a result the TX-500 is on my Christmas list too :-)

The Genesun 10A MPPT charge controller is great -- but it was expensive. I've never been happy with my kx3. Disappointed with the screen, so 2005. Sure isn't very rugged, carry it in a waterproof plastic case. No onboard charger, I worry im going to break the flimsy speaker wires removing it to charge. Menu's are ridiculous. Buy the time its packaged to go out its the size of a prc-77.
Maybe this is its replacement? I do wish it had a stackable amp, tuner and battery like the prc-351. Interested in the battery specs when it comes out.

I understand. From a preparedness perspective, this rig ticks the right boxes. The price is also reasonable. The engineering going into its design was unexpected.

Are you the same Max from Instagram? Yeah perhaps we are cut from the same cloth. I was heartbroken when Yaesu discontinued the 897 and didn't replace it with anyting. 7200 is also another great rig. Now this one has definitely secured its place in ham radio culture. I have the 705 here now, and I will purchase this radio for myself when it's available in EU.

The power cable and socket are included with the radio. All I had to do is terminate it with my favorite connectors. My radio came from Sweden.

Julian, thank you for this review. My only remaining concern with this transceiver is that there is no warranty listed for it; not in the manual, not on the Lab599 website, and not on the US HRO web page for it. Sure, there will be a repair or repair forwarding facility in Reno, NV. But is there a documented warranty, and what are its terms and conditions?
Following up on the warranty question, here is what US HRO indicated this morning by email:
"1 years parts and labor, it will be added to the website shortly."

Very nice video about the TX-500 which I've also been keeping an eye on. However, the 'green radio connectors' are nothing such. Not according to the manpacks I've used and owned (PRC104 etc). The common military (NATO) transceiver connector standard is called 'U-229' and it's commonly a 5-pin connector with a 6-pin subtype. These are extremely rugged connectors without 'gender' in the sense that pins 'mate' pin-to-pin, not pin-to-female receptacle. At least this is the case with all communications and crypto equipment I've been issued or been in touch with otherwise. The connectors used on the TX-500 are totally different but might work very well - as long as they're not filled with mud which is the strong selling point of the U-229.
I'm an ex military diver and we handled our stuff pretty badly. Still worked though, although we were issued toothbrushes to keep our U-229's free of grit and grime.

Up until the TX-500 I never heard of this company so it's a little bit of risk for me to put up the money just yet as promising as it is. Thanks for mentioning being disappointed with the 818 - I like Yaesu but when their "new" qrp rig came out I found the results much like waiting for a root canal senile dentist.
I'm just starting to get into the radio scene. I've held some of the handheld radios in my hand at the various shops and all of them feel like if I just put it in my emergency bag, they'd probably break. This definitely looks like it will hand being taken all over the place in my truck.

I'm actually more excited for this than the IC-705. For my the price of the 705 was a deal breaker. I'm a college student and don't have a ton of money to throw around on radios, I would like it but I ultimately have to be very careful. While this is quite a bit more than my G90, I wouldn't call it outrageous.
The lack of an internal tuner for me is a non issue since my primary antenna is a F-loop 2.0. However do want to find something more portable, since loops can be a challenge.
I treat my G90 more like a small base radio than an actual portable radio. Which is fine, its a very capable radio. But I personally would hesitate to call it truly portable. In context of a large 100w base radio, then yes it is portable.
I could really see the utility of having one of these around as a compliment, not a replacement of my G90. So all bases are covered in regards to base operations and portable ops. We've seen with this pandemic its entirely possible to be in a situation where you have to "bug in" and can't go anywhere, so having base capacity is important as well. But then on the field side this seems much easier to quickly put together a kit around this radio and move quickly.
I would defiantly like to get my hands on one.
And I agree on the easy to deploy antennas over stringing long wires in trees, I want to have something that's easy to deploy and setup. Not be fumbling around trying to get into a tree. Then if you have to leave the antenna should be easy to pack up for you to move to a new location or just go back home. I never have been a big fan of long wires, I get their utility, but they seem far too cumbersome to actually be practical. Additionally you could be in a situation where you don't have a bunch of trees around you so you can't string up the antenna. What do you do then? Not knocking the people who use them, its just not really for me.
We have this image with survival field ops that its just going to be running into the woods, setting up camp and stringing up an antenna. For some, yes. However, there's also the people who are in urban or suburban environments who might not have that option or its completely impractical for them to do. They could have situation where they have to leave their house and their only option will to be taking over and securing an abandoned building and setting up communications from that base. But still having the possibility of needing to leave quickly and find a new base. Not idea conditions, but its still a possibility which must me considered. Harder to simulate, since you can't just storm into a building and setup camp in a corner somewhere. But it should not be dismissed in the slightest. And because of that I don't think long wires necessarily are going to be the most practical in all circumstances. Biggest thing is know your area and think practically what will be the most practical under different conditions and build around that.

I am very hopeful about those connectors on the back, would be very nice if they can do more than just transfer battery pack info, imagine if Lab599 produce an empty add on case and provide the communication protocol for those connectors, it would potentially be possible to tailor it to exactly meet specific needs.

I've been waiting for this video. I want to see the difference between this and the 705. The TX-500 feels like the IC7200 just more rugged and minus the audio interface. (If anyone says the 7200 isn't rugged, mine still works after accidentally running it over in the dark). The possibility of taking these to from the car to the field is really appealing. Antennas still trip me up though. I think I just need set them all up and figure out what works for me.

The sotabeams linked dipole is a good performer, but it has a couple of deployment downsides. Wire tangles and getting the apex high enough. Some deploy with a telescopic mast which is heavy and cumbersome for 30, 40, 80m. Others launch into a tree, if there is that option.

Thanks so much for the review, I've been back and forth between this and the 705. I normally use for hiking, and base camping. I already have a 7100, so that covers base camping and vehicle ops. One question about the TX-500 that I did not find confirmed in the manual, or limited reviews. The specs show an FM deck, which would be handy for 10 and 6. Does this have Tone encode, or is it as the manual implies only 1000Hz? There may be a day again, when sunspots return, propagation becomes magic and world wide FM 10m repeater contacts are possible. (It's ok to dream). Thanks again for your reviews and very informative build videos. 73 - N3XG

Assuming it works the same as most other radios, an amp would definitely work. Just need to wire an interface cable for it to do PTT (grounding pins 1 and 2 on what looks like the 7-pin port).

I received mine yesterday from HRO in U.S.. Yea, only 50 in the US and being a big fan of QRP and love my KX3...I was looking for something more rugged to take along those misty and dusty QRP ventures. BUT, I might have a PROBLEM. There is a loose metallic object inside the radio and that spells a big no-no to NOT apply power. I am stuck wondering what to do now. Which brings me to the number one issue with this radio, there is NO way to contact Lab599 for any questions or issue resolution. I have followed their Instagram all this year and as many other followers I too have posted questions and they are not answered. You can see the frustration from his followers. . If there is going to be any down fall and acceptance to this radio it will be the ZERO ability to communicate with Lab599. I have a problem with a brand new radio and no one to contact. Not a good situation. PS: as usual an outstanding presentation, thank you.

Found the source of the metallic sound inside the TX-500. I took the radio apart and there was a loose screw. It appears to be one of the same screws that hold the mother board down. None of those are missing so I assume it was one that fell in during the assembly. This would had been a disaster if I had not heard the rattle. This would had surely shorted the radio and ruined it.

This radio ticks all the boxes for me, I use what's left of a 817 so I need a radio that can take a good kicking, I'm going to buy one 😁, I haven't done any home work on this radio, apart from the variety of resonant antennas I have, I do have an LDG Z817 ATU I wonder if they are going to make a accessory cable for this radio to match Z817 ATU

How waterproof is this radio as well as the speaker/microphone? I don't see an IP (intrusion protection) rating on their website.
Also, have you considered replacing the speaker/mic with one of the military type handset units? How hard would that be, does the impedance match, etc.?
No IP rating yet, so no speculation from me. I did operate in the rain on the last day of this trip with no issues. I thought about dunking it in a bucket, but didn't want to test to total failure.
The mil headset is a good idea. The PTT between the rig and headset could manage impedance but I'm not sure.

We made reflective vests for the dogs. You're right though, incredibly difficult to see in the snow. I had to give the radio back by the way oh, it was just a loaner. I look forward to having my own in a couple of months.

Not when portable, I used vox instead with JS8Call. On the desktop I used cat with js8call and wsjtx via flrig. That worked well.

I'm try to decide if I want to buy this radio or the G90. I like the G90's internal tuner and more power, but the design and quality of the tx500 appears to blow away the the G90. In your opinion, is the tx500 worth the extra money over the G90?
It all starts with your requirements, and type of operating you'd like to do. I think of the G90 as a 20 watt replacement for a FT-891 or FT-857. Lighter and easier to carry in the field. The TX500 is like a more rugged Elecraft KX2 or KX3. Someone would choose a TX-500 over them because they want/need a lightweight more durable radio option than the other options available. It's a hard choice for certain.

Well anyways, I just ordered the TX-500! Thank you so much for the reply. I also ordered a PowerFilm Light saver max and the super antenna MP1DXTR80. In other words, I ordered nearly the exact setup you ran. I am very excited.
One additional question, did you need to do anything extra to the power cable of the tx-500 to power it with the light saver? I'm not sure what is coming with them, what did you do to connect the two? If there is anything else I need to purchase I'd like to do so now while I wait for the radio.

Apparently the HRO stock has shipped from mother russia. They will be here soon! I pre-ordered one based upon your review Julian but I was wondering how much homebrewing I'll need to do with their proprietary (ok better word...different) power connections and attaching Anderson PPs so I can easily run a LiFPO battery. Simple chop and crimp job??
:-) It's easy as cake and if I remember correctly, they include the connector for you. It's just two wires eg red and black plus and minus. I terminated the cable they included with powerpoles.
I'm really excited to get the production model here. It's going to be magnificent.

The big question is how it performs vs a KX2 or 3 radio. RX, filtering, etc
Everyone asks that question and I suppose it's valid. I did some very serious weak signal work with this radio, and I was extremely satisfied with it. Even more so than my ft-891. The thing people aren't asking or at least not the elecraft owners, is would you take an elecraft kx2 or kx3 two places where you need a rugged radio? If the answer is yes, you would definitely take this over the KX series. The thing is, the only thing the KX series does well, is receiver performance. It's definitely the most important aspect, but it doesn't make a total field radio. I had a blast using this one well it was snowing in Lapland :-) perhaps elecraft will make a rugged version.

I used the lightsaver Max, but I also used a small DIY lithium iron phosphate pack I built. I have a video of that build coming out in a couple of weeks.

Santa has not delivered a tx500 yet, but I have been nice. Hopefully one will arrive in the coming week. That's a loaner unit. It's been pretty tough not being able to produce videos with this radio.

Its a chunk of money for a QRP rig, but I think it could be well worth having in an SHTF situation.
Agreed. For the size, weight and ruggedness, it might be a good shtf investment.
It's a lot less expensive than an IC-705 or KX3. Not cheap but not the top of the market either.

Great reviews and I really enjoy the field operations focus of your videos. As a less experienced operator I have been focused on 2m/ 70cm and am curious why many of these field radios do not include those bands. Is it a technical issue with adding different innards or is it a marketing/ user issue where more experienced hams prefer to run a different radio for those bands because of limited range? Or is it just that Discovery is targeting a certain niche with a solid proof of concept and will look to expand? I would think that a “do it all” unit that included 2m/ 70cm would make this a no-brainer vs the FT818.
Well we have to do it all radios. The I see 705 and the Yaesu ft-818. The thing is oh, many of us like doing HF Communications while backpacking, Mountaineering, or camping off grid in the backcountry. With those type of activities are usually out of the range of a 2m 70 centimeter radio, and instead carry an additional handling like a Yaesu ft 60 ft 70, th74, ic5100, ... there are even times I don't even carry a VHF UHF radio because I'm simply camping so far away. Now just to play Devil's Advocate, if I were doing satellite comes from the back country, and all-in-one radio like the 705 , ft-818, ic9700 makes more sense.

I don't use the one in this video anymore. I use a Maxpedition large water pouch these days.

Not that it would matter too much out in the field and/or on HF really but I (or someone) should research how good the frequency stability is on it. I imagine with the amount of heatsinking that the exterior offers it'd be pretty good but you never know.

It has a clear shield over it. Never protected it, and it never became an issue.
On six meters, will it do fm repeaters with pl tones or is it simplex only?
Sorry Dale I don't remember. I don't think I tested that functionality. It goes up to 56 megahertz so it would be silly for it not to work with repeaters. Let me know if you find out though please. It'll be a month or two before my tx500 is here
