The aesthetics of this game will definitely get people that normally wouldn't play Souls like games to get out of their shell and give it a try.

Had this on my radar since Iron Pineapple played it in one of his videos. Love the idea of the different shells, and the setting is really something unique!

Great review! Thank you for the thorough explanation of aspects you enjoyed and disliked. Thank you especially for including commentary regarding the Steam Deck performance - this may be common in your reviews, but I am a new subscriber and just want to say that it’s a wonderful touch since Steam Deck playability often makes the difference for me when choosing a platform. I’m really excited for the accessibility features as well since it means my daughter can finally try one of my favorite genres. Take care!

You gave it a good score even though you don't like Souls games is high praise. I'm looking forward to it. Not big on Souls games myself (only played Sekiro and Lies of P), but the main character was what got my attention.

Anybody ever buy a game out of spite? I had a really dumb talk with a Souls elitist on how some accessibility features can go a long way and I'm thinking of buying this game just to spite them.

Never bought a game out of spite to be honest!

@@IDreamofIndie It's a gamble. I bought Valkyria Chronicles 4 out of spite for the gaming journalist echo chamber. Back in the day, some journalists pegged that game as some transphobic, misogynistic trash, which told me it was probably a perfectly fine game. Boght it to spite them. Played the whole game. Had a good time. Saw absolutely zero things that could be construed as transphobic or misogynist. Funny enough, this was also the last straw for me and I never paid attention to mainstream game journos or their reviews again after this. So glad I stumbled upon you guys now.

I’m not an elitist, but making sure every game is accesible to every person sounds like a good way to ruin video games. Or at the very least take away any form of identity they have. The difficulty of games should be a filter. If you aren’t willing to learn how to play the game, it’s not for you. Maybe Hello Kitty Island Adventure would be more your speed. Adding an easy mode will attract even more of the types of people who expect developers to lower the bar to meet them at their level instead of the other way around. If Dark Souls had an instant-win button (besides the Gargoyle Halberd) to press anytime you faced some resistance that guy never would have become so passionate about it, Ornstein and Smough wouldn’t be names that even people who play games casually are aware of, and I wouldn’t still remember my Lightning Claymore that I beat the game with for the first time or the Gargoyle Halberd I beat NG+ with. It would just be some average game I played and forgot all about because it never gave me any resistance. If you want even more games to become soul-less, homogenized garbage to cater to people who don’t even play them, fine. Just know that eventually it will ruin something you care about too.

@@jamesbrincefield9879 If you think accessibility ruins video games...That is the definition of elitist.

    • @psycholuigiman

@@jamesbrincefield9879 I think you're mistaken. See, the reason a FromSoft Soulsborne game would be empty without the brutal difficulty is because, well, gameplay is all that series has. It doesn't have a compelling story, memorable characters that don't die halfway through cuz you messed up their questline, and each game has only a couple of truly memorable and awe-inspiring locations. I say all this as somebody who's played all of them and thouroughly enjoyed them now. A game like this one though has its wacky premise, unique setting, and goofy writing to keep it from being soulless and homogenized. I think you're looking at what makes a quality game through far too narrow of a lens. Hate to say it, but despite your protest, you are most certainly sounding like an elitist. I mean, I'm not opposed to a little bit of gatekeeping by the fans. Otherwise, I'd recommend every single game I ever played and enjoyed to everybody regardless of their preference or attitude towards games. I ain't gonna dump on a dev for making accessibility features. Heck, my favorite thing of all time is the option to turn off quick-time-events, and that is an accessibility feature. Do ya think that feature makes games more homogenized?

It’s a bummer the combat didn’t click for this reviewer… I was a little unclear whether he actually chose to utilize the accessibility feature or not, but maybe that was at the heart of it…?
As a Souls vet, I actually think they nailed the combat. Understanding, of course, that it’s a simplified version of what you get in a true Souls in terms of build diversity and whatnot, it’s still very refined and *feels* “correct,” which a lot of non-FromSoft soulslikes (even more ambitious projects) don’t quite nail. But here the timing feels right, enemy placement is good, and the challenge is there to give you that rush of excitement when you emerge from a hard battle by the skin of your teeth or just barely reach the “bonfire.”
So anyway, yeah, I disagree with the points about the combat, but if you’re already not a fan of Souls, you probably won’t really click with this without putting in some effort (at which point, you “get it” and probably *should* go and give Souls another chance!).
The platforming, exploration, vibrant color palette, cute characters, and based anti-capitalist themes (that it manages to get across while still not feeling preachy) set this apart, though, and make it pretty much a masterpiece in my book. Love what these devs have done here, praying for *another* Another Crab’s Treasure!

I wouldn't call it a Soulslike. I know that's what the devs intended, but it fails hard at being a Soulslike. It's just a generic 3D platformer, far away from being a Soulslike in my opinion.
