  • This 120 year old traditional wooden boat has come a long way since Andrew started this project. At the end of this video, there's a party to celebrate the fact that she still exists. Thanks to everyone who came.
    Andrew is building all of the coamings on deck that will keep the interior dry as he sails this historic wooden boat. They are made from various types of wood, primarily locust and white oak, though he did use some purple heart for the scuttle hatch, which is a forehatch that's special to luggers.
    Rosalind, a vernacular working sailboat built in St. Ives by William Paynter, has had a long and well traveled life. She's being rebuilt in Mystic, Connecticut by Andrew Guest, a boatbuilder and restorer who had already been thinking about building a lugger when he found this one destined for the chainsaw in Oxford, Maryland. Subscribe to this channel to follow and support her extensive restoration.
    ***WISHLIST: Right now we could really use some funds to help out with getting ready for the engine installation, which now includes the cost of a new propeller and shaft, since the ones Andrew has harvested from other boats aren't going to work out for Rosalind.

    Few of the best things in life come easy. It's clear to see how hard Andrew has worked on Rosalind and I applaud him for it.

    3:31 excellent job on proper angled dovetails. The best way to shed water down and out of the joint.

    That's a great comment about letting the Sikaflex set up good before tightening the bolts. Very little known, and you see all kinds of people just horsing stuff down into fresh polyurethane goups of various kinds. Sometimes you have to, or the thing you want to seal needs to be unable to move at all. But generally letting the goup at least start to cure is a much better idea.

      I learned it a number of times on my boat - mostly from the previous owner, but one leaky deck fitting that I took off again after about a month, and saw the problem. So I also looked it up in a book I had, and yep, it's best to let the goup form a gasket.

    Being of Cornish heritage myself, it was wonderful to hear the Cornish national anthem for the first time. An inspirational tune even if the lyrics were sung in Cornish! Rosalind has come so far in her 120 years and the footage of the massed luggers was excellent reminder of the huge herring fleets that once existed! Thanks Andrew for your gently presented series.

    I’m from St Ives, with a family heritage in fishing from Luggers. It was my best mates great grandfather who built the boat.

    In case you haven’t seen it already, I highly recommend Sailing Yabá. A young couple in Brazil is repairing a large boat to use as a platform for teaching scuba diving. They are helped by a bunch of older men who have built or repaired scores of boats using somewhat unconventional techniques. For instance establishing a waterline without using a laser level, not steaming any planks and a bunch or other interesting techniques!

    Happy 120, Rosalind! Beautiful job thus far on the rebuild, Andrew! It's channels like this that inspired me and gave me the confidence to get an old iron sick wooden boat and begin a full restoration.

    Desculpa a pergunta. Em vez de o barco ter dois mastros, porque não alterar e colocar só um. Ou queres manter a tradição?

    • @RestoringRosalind
      @RestoringRosalind  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Good question! Sim, estamos colocando dois mastros no barco por tradição, mas também devo dizer que a maioria dos barcos são projetados para ter um equipamento específico e que trocá-los pode fazer com que naveguem mal. Eu espero que isso faça sentido, faz muito tempo que não pratico meu português e tive que usar um aplicativo de tradução para ajudar. 😊🥂 chao! -Anne
