  • Holocaust survivor Israel “Izzy” Arbeiter shares his story about growing up in six concentration camps. In early March, JewishBoston sat down with Izzy to record both a video and an episode of The Vibe of the Tribe podcast. Released on Izzy’s 95th birthday and the 75th anniversary of his liberation, this video of Izzy sharing his story is complete with archival film footage and photographs chronicling the rise of Nazi Germany and the horrors millions of people endured.
Izzy discusses how he became a slave to the Nazis at the age of 14, and how after being liberated he-with the help of a U.S. military officer-tried to find his family and the woman who saved his life. We hope Izzy’s story of survival, loss, love, resiliency and strength moves you the way it moved us.
    Viewer discretion is advised.
Edited by Tyler Andrews (tylermandrews.myportfolio.com), with music performed by Josh Friedman (www.thatoneeyedkid.com).
We would also like to help Izzy solve a 75-year-old mystery-the identity of a U.S. Army major or colonel stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, immediately after the war. This officer, who was Jewish, obtained papers from Gen. Eisenhower that allowed Izzy free passage and shelter to find his now-wife, Anna, and his brother Aaron. He has always wanted to thank the officer-whose name he never asked for-and we want to try to help connect him with this man or his relatives. If you have any information, please email podcast@JewishBoston.com.

We must keep these stories alive across the world. As a teacher, I am concerned that we think we should shield our students from the very human stories of injustice, cruelty and destruction as well as those of hope, courage and resilience. The more time that passes, the greater the need to keep the human face on the historical facts in text books. Thank you, Izzy, for telling your story. I hope you are well and enjoy your 96th birthday.

I 100% agree.I have 3 children age's 14,11,& 7 that I feel need to know about what other ppl can do bc of hatred and how they must ALL ppl with love and respect no matter race,or nationality..not only that but BC in America we have such privilege and my kids at the smallest incident think "can life get any harder"..that's when I feel its necessary to let them know that precious children was literally ripped from their moms, pops from everything they knew..All the innocent ppl who lost their lives during the holocaust..we must never forget BC unfortunately history does repeat itself and in reality just how easy a tragedy like this could happen again

I would like to say thank you for sharing your story. Even though you lived through such a horrific and terrifying ordeal, it seems it didn't get to your core. You are amazing and I am grateful to have found your story.
My grandparents met at Auschwitz. My grandfather fought for the polish underground, was captured and sent to be a slave worker. My grandmother's family was considered a "political risk" and she with her family were also taken to the camp. My grandmother just passed away about 3 years ago. My whole life, my aunts, my uncles, and my mom, told me to never bring it up because it was a really terrible time for them and it would make them upset. Regretfully, I never even tried talking to her, ever. Looking back now, i wonder if my grandmother didn't speak about it because she felt no one wanted to hear about it. I would have loved to have expressed to her that I would listen if she ever felt like talking. But I respected what the adults said and never even thought about asking her anything until almost 3 years after she died. I wonder how much sadness, grief, anger, fear, would have been lesson even if only a tiny bit. She deserved to have that. However, i don't think She thought that.
Im glad that you sir, gave yourself that and spoke about your truth. Im so very sorry that you and your wife's families went trough so much tragedy. I don't know how you two survived that.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your story.

80% of Italian jews were saved due to many Italians protecting them . 20% loss is still horrendous but nothing like Poland nor most of Europe. My mothers parents emmigrated from Naples and their ancestors were Sephardic jews exiled from Spain, many of whom were forced to become Christian and hide their Jewish roots. But many southern Italians were still aware of their ancestry and were compassionate and protective.

Absolutely, he has a ton of courage and strength revisiting these horrendous nightmares but it does a great service to verify with such details the vericity to those who don't want to believe who want to deny. Yet some will wilfully still do so. He speaks with a factual mostly narrative tone as the emotional aspects must be too destructive, destabilizing if they were ever accessed fully and are better left in a locked box for his survival. I pray his courage telling this story doesn't erupt them on him.

In the end it is a beautiful love story. Like all of the difficulties that Yidden have suffered there is a purpose and a future that we do not have to understand. But when you see the divine influence that made these two come together and build new generations you must believe that there is a master plan and a Master Planner. Happenstance is not a factor when you put together the chances against this joining of souls.

Here are two positive thoughts taken from the holy Hebrew Scriptures that will console your broken heart:
    First-Promise recorded in Psalm 37: 9-12 says:
"For the wicked will be eliminated, but those who put their hope in Jehovah will inherit the earth. Just a little while longer, and the wicked will no longer exist; you will look where they were, and they will no longer be there. But the meek will inherit the earth and fully enjoy of abundant peace."
    Second-Promise recorded in Isaiah 25: 8 says:
"He will remove death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe the tears from all faces. He will remove from all the earth the disgrace of his people, for Jehovah himself has spoken."
Have a very pleasant day with your beloved family.

Jehovah is the true God of the Bible, the Creator of all things.
      Revelation 4:11 states:
"“You are worthy, Jehovah our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they came into existence and were created.”"
The prophets Abraham and Moses worshipped him, as did Jesus.
      Genesis 24:27 states:
"and said: “May Jehovah be praised, the God of my master Abraham, for he has not abandoned his loyal love and his faithfulness toward my master. Jehovah has guided me to the house of the brothers of my master.”"
      Exodus 15:11 states:
"Who among the gods is like you, O Jehovah? Who is like you, showing yourself mighty in holiness? The One to be feared with songs of praise, the One doing wonders."
      John 20:17 states:
"Jesus said to her: “Stop clinging to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father and to my God and your God.’”
He is the God, not just of one people, but of “all the earth.” as stated in Psalm 47:2:
"For Jehovah the Most High is awe-inspiring; He is the great King over all the earth."
I have answered your question "who is Jehovah?" Yes, Jehovah is God the Almighty.
      What is your next question?

Soon the fulfillment of Isaiah 2:4 will take place:
"He will render judgment among the nations and set matters straight respecting many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war anymore."
We will enjoy absolute peace, for all the tragical events will be forgotten, according to Isaiah 65:17:
"For look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be called to mind, Nor will they come up into the heart."
