LU: The Waterloo & City line

- Today’s video is a short film about the Waterloo & City line of the London Underground.
Merely connecting two stations, namely Waterloo station with Bank station in the City of London, the Waterloo & City line is the shortest line of the London Underground. The line opened in 1898 and is the second-oldest underground line in London. However, for most of the time it was owned and operated by mainline railway companies, most recently by British Rail. It is only in 1994 when its operation were transferred to London Underground.
The main purpose of the line is to take commuters from the busy Waterloo railway station into the financial district of the city. As such, it only operates on weekdays and Saturdays, and it is closed on Sundays.
The film starts at Waterloo station, where trains turn around via the small maintenance yard of the line. We then take a 1992 Tube stock train towards Bank station.
Enjoy!

Not automatically announced, has to be set by the driver
@@denfitzpatrick5988 no. Literally in this video, Emma Clarke automatic announced
Lubdhak Das W but it has to be set by the driver, it isn’t automatic on the W&C line 😉
1:06 that annoying moment where you just miss a train!
It is the second oldest deep tube line. The City and South London line between King William Street and Stockwell opened in 1890 and I believe it was the first electric railway apart from the Volks in Brighton.
The first! The Met is a sub surface line.
@@Sel__27__27 The first deep tube line was the City and South London line, between King William Street in the City, and Stockwell.
@@michaeltajfel oh ya, but u said the met

Where?
@@Savage_YU the person who tried to get on the train at the last min
You mean 1:06
It uses the same tube stock as the Central Line. I read before that the drivers on the W&C shuttle service are Central Line drivers. I guess that makes sense, otherwise it would get very boring for them.
The only difference i see is the windows watching it from outside. You can see through them way more clearly
The W&C trains also have no ATC or regenerative brakes
4:56 The Door ring didn't play
Well spotted

Waterloo and city should extend to Liverpool Street
Is Liverpool Street in the city of London?
@@Great_WesternTVFan Yes it is

Got same stock like Central Line
I'm guessing Siri thought you said 'stuck' and not 'stock'?
@@TheSearleFamily123 oh my Bad
nice video and this has an equivalent in manhattan it's the Times Square 42nd Street to Grand Central terminal shuttle only time it will operate late nights if there is a 7 train suspension between 34th street-Hudson Yards or Times Square 42nd Street to Queensboro Plaza
And it is comparable to the Slough to Windsor and Eton Central line.

really? i would have never guessed

The WC 1992TSs should have the same front refurbishment as the Central Line ones. I kind find it funny that they're the odd ones out
Aventanario I prefer the old refurbishment at the front, the new one on the central line makes the train look old
I think the old ones are there because These were built for NSE and were known as class 482’s maybe that’s a he reason the old signs haven’t been replaced
@@haz05-06 actually yeah. The original livery is better

Northern and Waterloo city lines and national rail services
The annoying thing about going on the Waterloo & city line it that when you go to Waterloo you have to tap out then tap in again.
I remember when they used 'normal' trains on this line and not Tube trains.
You must be very old then. Apart from when these trains were introduced in the 1990s, the previous stack dates from 1937. It was under the management of British rail until 1994, but it never had regular surface stock trains. They would never have fitted in the tunnels.

The W&C line looks like the Central line
The 1992 stock trains are used on both lines but the W&C trains only have 4 cars
@Jonah Kemp yes
Did you know, the Longest london underground line between Ruislip through to Essex, the central line, it uses the 1992 stock and the Waterloo and city line, the shortest london underground stock, used the same 1992 stock
And the Waterloo and City line trains have got armchairs but the Central line doesn't have that
Waterloo and city shuttle not line because is has only two stops.
I know it's small - but we still call it a line!

Comparable to the Ramal line in Madrid
This line is manually Drive
The Waterloo & City Line Has Arm Rests.. That's Really Cool ❤ Also They Should Make The Waterloo & City Line Into The Circle, Hammersmith, Metropolitan & District Line Trains...
That isnt how it works
It isn’t sub-surface, although I think they should make an s-stock train with a lower ceiling for the lower surface trains
Are there 2 running tunnels?
Yes
ERROR 42ST instead of 42AVE
Why does it sounds like the central line when it departs
Because it is almost the exact same train both 1992ts slightly dofferent
The 1992 stock on the central line is different than those because these sets on the Waterloo and city line were actually know as class 482’s and were built for network southeast so that is why they are a bit different
Miles Campbell yes but other than that they are the same
I know I'm a bit late to say thank you but thank you anyways
1:38 What is that sound?
@@KenzForShort it's just the junctions. Crossing over junctions make that clickity clack noises
@@KenzForShort but the Bakerloo line is even worse, they sound like the train has been derailed and it's being scraped on the tunnel walls
the train farted
they actually need to extend this line
There are a number of reasons this is a bad idea. (Short platforms, the stations it serves are surrounded by other tunnels making it difficult, it would be easier just to build a new line (eg. crossrail 2) It will forever remain a little oddity of the TfL network, nothing wrong with that. Shuttles have their uses.
*This is a Waterloo and City Docklands line train to Waterloo*
@@satan1149 I mean it would still be better tbh if it was extended, but shuttles do help. I'm sure if they wanted to theyd take caution and do it.
Facts
👎👎👎👎 to see the drivers cab door open on the side he was sitting on.
Why the thumbs down? Its not against the rules!
It is not connected to the rest of the network NOT! Bank station
Physically, it's not connected, trains cannot travel to another line. Passengers can obviously change to other lines at both Bank + Waterloo.
